Journey to the West: Starting by taking Sun Wukong as my disciple!-Chapter 787 - 786: There is No White Horse
Xuanzang heard the voice of the demon and was so frightened that he began to tremble, and the Six-Eared Macaque quickly patted Xuanzang’s back to comfort him.
When the demon was coming, the three of them lay down in the grass.
The demon came over and looked around but didn’t see anything. "Really strange, I clearly heard someone coughing just now, how can I see nothing?" the little demon said, "I wasn’t mistaken just now, was I? Didn’t you also tell me that you heard someone coughing?"
"No, I definitely heard it too, but we can’t find anyone, why is that?" The demon looked around again but still found nothing.
After looking around and discovering nothing, the two demons decided not to search anymore.
Just as they were about to leave, the white horse suddenly neighed.
The demon spun around sharply, and the two looked at each other.
"I wasn’t wrong, was I? It was indeed a horse neighing, could there be wild horses nearby?" Hearing the horse’s neigh, that demon started searching again.
The Six-Eared Macaque looked at the white horse, which he had hidden using a spell, wondering what got into it to start neighing all of a sudden.
After making just one sound, the white horse did not neigh again, but that one sound was enough to attract the demon’s attention.
The white horse had neighed because Chen Nuo had used a spell on the horse’s hooves to cause it pain. As Chen Nuo and the Six-Eared Macaque couldn’t be tampered with, only the white horse was left. Ensuring it just neighed without getting agitated took quite some effort.
The Six-Eared Macaque’s mana was limited, and it wasn’t possible to hide three people and a horse; fortunately, the grass was lush on this side, so hiding in the grass could ensure the demons wouldn’t discover them, as long as the white horse’s tracks were well concealed.
But he had only concealed their shapes, forgetting that the white horse could also make noise, which is how the demons noticed them.
As the demon was about to come over, the Six-Eared Macaque had to make a quick decision.
If they did nothing, they would surely be discovered by the demons hidden in the grass, so the only way to avoid detection was to sacrifice the white horse.
As the two demons approached, the Six-Eared Macaque lifted the spell from the white horse and also untied its reins.
The two demons walked over, only to see a white horse bolting towards them, startling the demons instantly.
"What’s going on here? How can there be a wild horse in these desolate mountains?" The demon found it strange but since the white horse ran so fast, they didn’t get a clear look at it.
The smaller demon behind, being farther away, wasn’t affected by the charge of the white horse, and he got a good look at the animal.
"Doesn’t it seem like a wild horse?" the demon said. "When he was running over, I thought I saw a saddle on him.
"No way, if there’s a saddle, it means this white horse has an owner and isn’t wild. But where is his owner then, why haven’t we seen him?" The demon found it very strange and looked around but saw no one.
The two demons looked left and right but still saw nothing, scratching their heads in bewilderment.
Suddenly, the one who had been speaking before thought of something, "Could it be that the cough we heard just now was the white horse’s owner?"
As he spoke, the other demon also felt it made a lot of sense.
"Yeah, why didn’t I think of that? But there was no sound when we came over, so why did it run away? It couldn’t possibly have noticed us as demons so early on, could it?" the little demon said.
The Tang Monk and his two disciples were hiding in the bushes, listening to the conversation between the two demons.
Xuanzang felt extremely anxious, now all he could hope for was that the two demons would leave soon, so he could feel a little relieved in his heart. Otherwise, if they were caught by the demons, not only would they lose the white horse, but also their lives, and that would be a truly bad deal.
It seemed as though the two demons had heard Xuanzang’s inner prayers, and after not discovering anything else, they left the area.
After the demons had left, the three rose from the ground.
"That was really close. We were almost caught by the demons," he said, giving a sigh of relief.
Had he not mentioned it, Six Ears wouldn’t have gotten so worked up.
"Do you have the nerve to say that? Wasn’t it your cough that alerted the two demons to our presence?" Six Ears said angrily.
"Sorry, sorry," he said with a laugh, apologizing to Six Ears, "Everyone has their moments, please understand."
"I could understand during normal circumstances, but when the demons were about to come over, couldn’t you have held it in?" Six Ears argued angrily, "What if the demons had discovered us? Bodhisattva Guanyin said you were a reliable person, but I haven’t seen a hint of it. Or do you think being caught doesn’t scare you?"
"It was just an accidental cough; aren’t you making too much of a fuss over it?" he said smiling.
Xuanzang also felt that Six Ears was being a bit too aggressive, "Wukong, Mr. Chen, it was just an accident; don’t be so harsh."
"Am I being too harsh?" Six Ears was almost amused by his own anger, "Master, you were so scared you were shaking all over just now. Would you be as generous as you are now if we were actually taken by the demons?"
Obviously, that would be out of the question, but since they hadn’t been caught by the demons, Xuanzang simply couldn’t understand Six Ears’ feelings.
"Wukong, saying such things is really too much," Xuanzang rebuked, feeling embarrassed to be called out in public. Even if he was indeed as Six Ears described, it wasn’t something to advertise.
Caught up in his anger at the time, Six Ears hadn’t considered the repercussions of his words; hearing Xuanzang’s anger, he softened his tone and apologized to Xuanzang.
"Master, my apologies. I spoke out of turn just now. I was just anxious because the demons were already upon us. You’re so afraid of demons; I feared that if you were really taken by one, you would be even more scared. It was wrong of me to speak that way, Mr. Chen, I apologize to you."
After all, one doesn’t slap a smiling face, and with Six Ears apologizing to him like that, Xuanzang, even if still upset, couldn’t scold him any longer. He turned to Chen Nuo and said, "Mr. Chen, my apologies, my disciple spoke out of turn. But he truly had our best interests at heart, so if you’re upset by his words, please don’t take them to heart."
It was all intentional, but he hadn’t expected Six Ears to actually sacrifice the white horse. At first, Xuanzang thought the demons would discover them, knowing Six Ears’s mana was not enough to hide all three of them. Even if it was, he would have made plans to reveal their position.
Although a plan had not come to fruition, Chen Nuo was not in a hurry. The mountain was vast, and the demons were patrolling all the time; they would find them sooner or later.
It was only when they had to resume their journey that Xuanzang realized the dreadful reality of being without the white horse.
When they had the white horse, they were already slow, now they would be even slower.
