Chapter 57: Senseless Fight

Valentina was breathing heavily after a prolonged fight...

Around the perimeter of the police station, bodies lay everywhere, turning the snow-white landscape a bloody red.

Worst of all, this blood wasn’t from monsters, but from humans!

It all started as soon as she managed to get her hands on a power generator by spending all the points she could gather. This new resource brought great comfort to the survivors in her group, renewing everyone’s hope and boosting morale after the devastating news of a terrible winter...

But such a valuable item also caught the attention of many groups of survivors who thought they could take such a treasure for themselves...

Valentina thought she could reason with some of these groups, but this only resulted in some men on her side being killed in the initial clashes, as they tried to spare the lives of the desperate survivors. But with the deaths of innocent people on the police station’s side, the use of lethal force was used without restraint.

Every day, a new group tried to steal the generator, but in the end, their blood soaked the area around the police station. Valentina initially felt guilty about all the bloodshed, but when she learned that most of these groups were subordinates of the surviving mafias, she stopped caring and became less callous about it all.

"Captain, there are some still alive. Should we execute them? Our prisons are full, and we’ll have to feed these scum through the worst of the winter..." complained a disgruntled officer.

Killing these men as they attacked the base was one thing; executing them unarmed was quite another. Valentina couldn’t give that order. And while she remained silent, her father intervened.

"Leave them to me. Heal their wounds enough for them to walk. I’ll send them to collect some items I need. If they survive, I’ll let them work for us under my supervision." Commissioner Luis Morales stood out, taking responsibility for the men.

"Dad... Thank you!"

"No need to thank me, I have to do my part too... Bennett, can you help me with them?"

"Yes, sir!"

Later that day, Bennett followed Valentina’s father to a construction site, as they escorted a group of seven survivors from the last group that attempted to storm the police station...

The prisoners walked slowly and breathed heavily due to still being injured, while everyone had an expression of fear about what they would have to face.

"Commissioner, is this the place we need to collect the items?" one of the criminals asked, looking frightened at the construction site, which appeared to have nothing of value.

"Phfft"

"Phfft"

"Phfft-Phfft"

As soon as he asked the question, Luís Morales pulled out a silenced pistol and shot two men in the head, then fired two more shots into the chest of the man who asked the question.

"Wait, please—"

The other criminals tried to run, while one of them knelt for mercy, but Bennett did the same as the Commissioner, pulling out another silenced pistol and killing all the remaining men...

After the men were executed, the two looked at each other and gave a tacit nod before beginning to drag the bodies to a dark trench that had been dug as the foundation for the building... They then threw a lot of gravel and other debris over the bodies before making their way back to the police station...

At no point did the two men exchange a single word, but they both did what they had just done out of love and affection for Valentina. And as long as they could keep her hands clean of all this dirt, they would both do whatever was necessary for the group without hesitation...

Just as they were about to reach the police station, someone came running toward Bennett, shouting.

"BENNETT, QUICKLY, WE NEED TO HIDE YOU!"

"What happened? Why should I hide?"

"Someone named Rick and several other survivors were killed by a mysterious man... We got a radio report that he was coming after you..."

"And Valentina? Where is she?" Bennett asked in a worried tone.

"She took half a dozen police officers and ran to Kaito’s hotel..."

"I’ll run there, please take care of things at the police station," Bennett told the Commissioner and ran off at a fast pace.

Luis Morales waved; even though he was already a Level 3 mutant, he was old and couldn’t keep up with Bennett.

"WAIT, BENNETT! THE CAPTAIN’S ORDERS WERE TO REMAIN SAFE..." The police officer tried to stop Bennett but was completely ignored...

Bennett ignored Valentina’s orders to hide and ran with everything he had to Kaito’s hotel, but when he got there, he realized it was too late.

In front of Kaito’s hotel, Bennett found several corpses of armed men, killed in gruesome ways. Some had so many bullets in their bodies it was almost impossible to count, others were missing body parts or had been cut in half, and some had become twisted pieces of flesh mixed with their weapons like twisted clothing...

Among the corpses were also several pieces of what must have been Kaito’s drones. Bennett had barely arrived at the scene when he saw the six dead police officers who had come with Valentina. They had died in the same way as Kaito’s other men.

Running, he finally reached Valentina and luckily found her still alive, but her condition was far from good. Her shield, considered indestructible by everyone at the station, had been destroyed, and its pieces could be seen scattered across the street. She was lying on her back on the ground with both arms broken at odd angles, while a golden man stepped on her face, slowly crushing her head.

Not far from her, Kaito knelt with a blank expression. His combat suit was destroyed, and only a few pieces were still clinging to his body. He appeared injured, but he didn’t move of his own volition. His adoptive brother, Oyibo, was pinned to the asphalt by a silver spear that had pierced his stomach. He was trying to remove the spear, occasionally shouting angrily in Kaito’s direction...

Bennett ignored everyone, and the first thing he did was try to run to Valentina, but only the golden man’s voice froze him in place.

"Detective Bennett, you came to me..."

"No, Bennett, don’t come. Run away... AHHH!" Valentina tried to warn him not to come any closer, only to find her head pressed even further by the man’s foot.

"YOU BASTARD, LEAVE HER AND FACE ME—"

Bennett’s scream was cut off as he lost his balance and fell to the ground.

"NOOO!" Valentina screamed.

But only when his face hit the ground did he realize he’d fallen not because he’d tripped over something, but because, like the other officers, he’d been cut in half at the waist...

As the pain of being cut in half hit him, Bennett also felt as if something extremely important had been ripped from his chest; the pain was even greater than the pain of being cut in half... Bennett struggled to look at Valentina using his arms and the little strength he had left...

Bennett’s vision was starting to blur, but he still saw what happened... The golden man, who now held a crystal in his hand, looked up at the sky and seemed worried about something. He retrieved the spear that had pinned Oyibo to the ground and placed his hand on his neck while muttering something. After that, he approached Kaito, placing his hand on his shoulder, and in a flash of silver light, the two disappeared...

Valentina still couldn’t believe she’d survived. She struggled to her feet, unable to use her arms, and ran to Bennett, who had been cut in half. Bennett tried to say something to her, but only spat out blood and failed miserably.

Unable to understand, Valentina herself, tears began to stream down her face as she spoke:

"Don’t strain yourself, Bennett, it’ll be okay... It’ll be okay, it’ll be okay... Sniff."

Soon, Oyibo also approached, clutching his stomach, and crouched next to Bennett. At that moment, Bennett summoned all his remaining strength and grabbed his clothes. He spat out blood once more, his gaze darting between Oyibo and Valentina as if leaving a final message for the only other man who also knew the future...

With this final message, which only Oyibo understood, Bennett stopped breathing and finally died. At the same time, another inhuman figure mysteriously appeared beside the three... Despite standing there beside them, no one could see him. His eyes and long hair were silver, and his skin was so white that it emitted a faint light. His face held an expression of pity and guilt as he looked at the destruction and death the Jyreans had suffered because of their race’s momentary weakness.

With a wave of his hand, Valentina and Oyibo’s injuries were completely healed, and he finally decided to reveal himself to the two Jyreans, as he came out of his special hidden state that not even Valentina’s system felt, and introduced himself...
