Chapter 17: Azure crystal
Sho stood at the edge of the river, his eyes wide with desperation. The currents of the River of the Forgotten roared beneath him, the waters swallowing Daigo's form until he was no longer visible. The last thing Sho saw was Daigo's outstretched hand disappearing beneath the foaming waves.
Sho clenched his fists, his heart pounding in his chest. He took a deep breath, ready to jump in after his friend, but before he could move, a strong grip seized his wrist.
"No!" Kyoko's voice was sharp and firm. Her grip tightened around his arm, refusing to let him go.
Sho turned to her, his eyes burning with a mix of anger and anguish. "Let me go, Kyoko! Daigo—he's—"
"He pushed us to the surface for a reason!" Kyoko shouted, her voice shaking. "He sacrificed himself so we could survive. Do you want to throw that away? Do you think he did that just for you to jump in and drown too?"
Sho's breathing was ragged. His body trembled with the urge to fight against her, to dive in and save Daigo, but her words pierced through his desperate thoughts like a knife. His fists slowly unclenched, his shoulders slumping. The weight of helplessness pressed down on him like never before.
Kyoko took a deep breath, her voice softening. "We have to keep going. If we turn back now, we're throwing away everything Daigo did for us."
Sho closed his eyes, biting his lip until he tasted blood. Every fiber of his being screamed at him to go after Daigo, but deep down, he knew Kyoko was right. Swallowing hard, he nodded, his voice barely above a whisper. "Let's go."
Kyoko released his arm but kept close to him, ready to pull him back if he lost control again. Together, they turned away from the raging river and continued their journey deeper into the cave.
As they walked, the atmosphere around them changed. The damp air was heavy with an unnatural stillness, and the walls of the cave began to shimmer with an eerie blue glow. The deeper they ventured, the more the glow intensified, illuminating their path with an otherworldly radiance.
Then, they saw it.
At the heart of the cavern stood a massive crystal, pulsating with an ethereal blue light. The Azure Crystal. It towered over them, its translucent surface reflecting their awed faces. Waves of energy radiated from it, making the air hum with power.
Sho and Kyoko stood in silence, both mesmerized by the breathtaking sight. The crystal was unlike anything they had ever seen—alive, almost sentient, its light pulsing like a heartbeat.

Sho took a cautious step forward, his fingers twitching as if drawn to the crystal's energy. "This is it... the Azure Crystal."
Kyoko nodded, her voice barely above a whisper. "It's beautiful... but something about it feels... overwhelming."
Sho could feel it too. The energy surrounding the crystal wasn't just powerful—it was ancient. It carried a presence, something watching, something waiting.
Then, without warning, the light of the crystal flared, casting the entire cavern in a blinding blue radiance. A low rumble echoed through the walls, and the ground beneath them trembled. Sho and Kyoko instinctively stepped back, their bodies tensing.
The cave was alive.
Something was coming.
