Chapter 201: [201] The Divine Shot Caller

The scorpions attacked as one, charging from all sides.

"Positions!" Xavier shouted. "Naomi, left flank. Margaret, support. Ashley, maintain the zone. Calypso..." He met her eyes. "Guide us."

They moved with newfound purpose. Xavier targeted the third segment of the nearest scorpion, his daggers finding purchase between crystal plates. The creature emitted a high-pitched whine as opalescent fluid leaked from the wound.

Naomi rolled beneath another scorpion, using her momentum to drive both daggers into its softer underside. The beast thrashed, nearly crushing her before she scrambled clear.

"Two o’clock, Xavier!" Calypso called. "The leader is positioning for a coordinated strike!"

Xavier pivoted, narrowly avoiding pincers that would have severed his arm. His meter flickered, gaining points with each successful dodge and counter.

Margaret stayed behind Ashley’s protective zone, watching for patterns in the creatures’ movements. "They’re herding us toward the crystals on the right! Don’t let them back us against the wall!"

Naomi found herself cornered by two scorpions, their pincers snapping at her from both sides. She ducked and weaved, but her back pressed against rough stone as they closed in.

"Naomi needs help!" Margaret shouted.

Calypso’s eyes flashed pink. "Xavier! The one on the left has a crack in its carapace from an old injury. Hit it just behind the right pincer!"

Xavier didn’t hesitate. He launched himself into a sliding attack beneath the creature, daggers striking precisely where Calypso had indicated. The scorpion’s entire right side shattered, crystalline shards cascading to the ground.

All the scorpions froze momentarily, emitting a collective shriek that reverberated off the canyon walls.

"They feel each other’s pain," Calypso confirmed. "The more we damage them, the more disorganized they’ll become."

The battle shifted. Instead of chaotic individual struggles, they operated as a coordinated unit. Calypso called out weaknesses and openings. Xavier and Naomi struck with surgical precision. Margaret used her staff to distract and misdirect, while Ashley maintained her interference field, preventing any Essentia blasts from reaching them.

"The leader," Calypso said, pointing to the largest scorpion that had held back from direct engagement. "That’s our primary target. Kill it, and the rest will retreat."

Xavier’s meter glowed, nearly full from the extended combat. "I need a clear shot."

"On it," Naomi replied. She darted forward, drawing the attention of two smaller scorpions. "Hey, shiny! Over here!"

The creatures turned, pursuing her as she weaved between crystal formations.

"Margaret," Calypso called, "that outcropping to your right—use it as high ground. We need distraction."

Margaret nodded, scrambling up the indicated rock face. From above, she could see the entire battlefield. Four scorpions lay dead or dying, their crystal bodies already beginning to crumble. Three more, including the leader, remained active.

"Ashley," Calypso said, "I need you to pulse your field. Can you do that? Contract it briefly, then expand it again."

Ashley frowned, golden lines deepening across her forehead. "It’ll hurt."

"Just for a second."

Ashley nodded. The invisible boundary of her dead zone shimmered, contracting inward before rapidly expanding again. In that moment, the lead scorpion fired an Essentia blast—which dissipated harmlessly as Ashley’s field snapped back into place.

The momentary distraction was all Xavier needed. He launched himself toward the leader, meter flaring to full capacity. Pink energy engulfed his daggers as he slid beneath the creature’s guard.

"Third segment, just left of center!" Calypso called. "There’s a hairline fracture there!"

Xavier’s blades struck true, driving deep into the crystalline body. The scorpion reared back, emitting a deafening shriek as cracks spread across its carapace. Energy leaked from the wounds in bright bursts of color.

"Finish it!" Calypso urged.

Xavier activated his Fever Mode, body glowing with stored energy. His next strike shattered the creature’s main body into thousands of glittering fragments.

The effect was immediate. The remaining scorpions froze, then turned and burrowed back into the snow and earth with frantic speed, disappearing as quickly as they had appeared.

Silence descended on the pass. Only the soft crunch of crystal shards beneath their boots disturbed the sudden quiet.

"That was..." Margaret began, climbing down from her perch.

"Impressive," Naomi finished, wiping opalescent fluid from her daggers. She looked at Calypso with newfound respect. "I didn’t know you could read enemies like that."

Calypso shrugged, but Margaret caught the pleased gleam in her eyes. "Divine perception. I see patterns mortals can’t."

Xavier approached Calypso, sheathing his daggers. He didn’t say anything for a moment, just looked at her with an expression she couldn’t quite read. "Next time," he said finally, his voice low, "I’ll follow your lead from the start."

A slow, satisfied smile spread across Calypso’s lips. "I thought you’d never ask."

Ashley approached, golden fractures pulsing more softly now. "The dead zone will hold for another hour before I need rest."

Xavier nodded. "We should move. Those things might come back with reinforcements."

They retrieved their packs from where they’d fallen and continued through the pass on foot. Margaret fell into step beside Ashley.

"Their horses will probably return to Hearthome," she said. "Torval’s men will find them."

Ashley nodded, her expression unreadable.

"That was quite something back there," Margaret ventured. "Calypso, I mean."

"Yes," Ashley said simply. "She found her place."

Margaret studied Ashley’s profile—the golden lines now permanently etched into her skin, the distance in her eyes that hadn’t been there before her transformation.

"And have you found yours?" she asked gently.

Ashley’s lips curved in what might have been a smile. "I’ve found something better. I’ve found quiet."

Ahead of them, Calypso walked beside Xavier, gesturing animatedly as she explained something about the crystal formations. Their shoulders brushed occasionally, and Xavier listened with complete attention. Naomi scouted ahead, her slender form alert and watchful.

They were figuring it out—this strange, broken family of displaced souls. Each finding their unique contribution, their place in the whole.

Margaret adjusted her staff across her shoulder and continued forward. The Westlands border lay ahead, and with it, the hope of finding Nolan.

Above them, the sky darkened with approaching storm clouds. Somewhere, the Winter Court watched and waited.
