The Nightmen.

This was what Nick had envisioned for humanity.

It was not the best solution.

Creating an entire race of inherent psychopaths was not what Nick considered humanity.

Humanity was supposed to be filled with emotions.

Parents loving their children.

Children loving their parents.

Partners loving each other.

Yet, with the Nightmen, this would not happen.

They couldn't feel empathy, and love would be something very difficult to feel.

Even amongst each other, they wouldn't feel a lot.

If Nick had a choice, he would not have chosen this.

The Emperor's DNA was the DNA of a Specter, and Specters were very different from humans.

Technically, Specters didn't even have any DNA.

However, the Emperor had once been human, which meant he had DNA.

And the Emperor was also a Specter now.

This created a unique scenario that allowed Nick to cross a Specter with a human.

In order to make the Nightmen immune to the darkness, Nick had to include some parts of the Emperor's DNA.

Sadly, no matter what he chose to include, the new humans would have some Specter characteristics.

Around 70% of the DNA related to Zephyx and different applications of Zephyx.

Nick couldn't use any of that since the Nightmen needed to work with Pure Energy.

About 20% of the DNA was a mix of Zephyx and different Specter characteristics.

Naturally, the part with the Zephyx still couldn't be included.

The Specter characteristics also couldn't be incorporated.

For example, wanting to cause suffering.

Anti-social people might enjoy inflicting some suffering, but that was because of other emotions.

Anti-social people inflicted suffering to feel empowered or to disperse the greyness deep inside that comes from not having empathy or love as an inherent motivator.

Most humans willingly partook in difficult situations, like working a grueling job, to improve the lives of their loved ones.

"As long as I keep earning, my wife and children can have a happy life."

This was what many people thought of.

The love and compassion they felt for their loved ones was satisfying.

They had a purpose in life.

They were doing the right thing.

The spectrum for anti-social people was wide, and there were also some of them who could feel love and empathy.

But for those who couldn't, this inherent feeling of satisfaction didn't exist, which meant they had to satisfy themselves in other ways.

Status, power, wealth.

When a person only ate tasteless and bland food in their entire life, an average bread might be the brightest and most delicious thing they had ever eaten.

Many anti-social people never tasted the fulfilling feeling of loving someone and supporting them.

When someone loved someone else with all their being, they did everything for that other person.

Sure, getting a promotion was nice, but if it didn't come with an improvement in relationship, it might feel hollow.

After all, they worked for their family.

What was the point of the promotion when it only caused issues in the relationship?

Many anti-social people didn't have that, which was why rising a level in status was the most exhilarating feeling they had ever felt.

It felt like a true purpose.

Because of that, they tended to throw their everything into their careers.

Many anti-social people worked harder than almost all normal people.

These people were not using work as a tool to achieve their true goals.

Their work was their true goal.

It was fulfilling.

Naturally, as with everything, this was not true for everyone.

There were also plenty of anti-social people who didn't care about work.

However, the Nightmen Nick had created were not designed in this way.

Specters desired power, and this was one of the aspects Nick had incorporated into the Nightmen.

The Nightmen desired power and excitement.

Getting into a conflict was exciting.

It brought color into the greyness.

It was different.

The Nightmen were fiercely competitive.

They tried to play each other to get what they wanted.

Status, wealth, and power.

Now, this obviously sounded very dangerous and self-destructive for society.

That was where the other aspect came into play.

Very high intelligence.

A normal anti-social person might consume everything just so that they could have everything.

But a very intelligent anti-social person knew that without society, they wouldn't have anything.

Society needed to continue existing.

And it needed to thrive.

What was better? Commanding five Johns or commanding ten Veterans?

Well, you have to have Veterans in the first place if you want to command them.

The Nightmen would be fiercely competitive with each other.

Two Heroes would go at each other's throats just to get the bigger pile of resources.

Yet, these Heroes wouldn't go for the Experts or Veterans.

They needed the Experts or Veterans since they were the seeds of the trees that would feed them their fruit in the future.

Explaining anti-social behavior in detail would be too much.

Quite a lot of these things were overgeneralized.

But this was about the Nightmen, and these aspects fit them.

Would the Nightmen sacrifice themselves for humanity?

Pffft! Of course not!

But if they were forced to, that didn't matter.

Staying calm in a fight was the most important thing, and many anti-social people could remain extremely calm during these situations.

They were dangerous to their allies, but they were even more dangerous to the enemy.

As long as they were kept in line, it would be a net positive.

The Nightmen were warriors.

When the final battle approached, they would strike with hunger, greed, and vengeance.

When the fight was over, and if the Nightmen managed to integrate into society with normal humans, they could stay…

But if they couldn't…

Well, at that point, humans wouldn't need to be immune to the darkness anymore.

All these Specter traits would no longer be necessary.

At that point, Nick could just make normal people who worked with Pure Energy, and he wouldn't need to include any Specter traits anymore.

Most likely, the Nightmen would be able to be part of the new society.

After all, they were intelligent, and they knew what would happen if they couldn't.

Nick was holding their leash.

And if they were not nice when the fight was over…

He would put them down.
