Chapter 518: They Just Happened to Lose Money

As they led the other guests from the guesthouse out, one by one, to see the commotion, the people wearing armbands exchanged glances when Su Xiaoxiao and Jiang Yexun hadn’t opened the door for a long time. They then lifted their feet, intending to kick down the door.

The guesthouse staff, nearly on the verge of panic, dared not intervene.

However, before their feet could reach the door, it suddenly opened. One of them lost his balance and was thrown into a split, crashing hard onto the floor. The sound of the cotton tearing echoed, and his woolen pants were clearly exposed. Too bad it wasn’t summer; otherwise, it would have been truly embarrassing.

Su Xiaoxiao couldn’t help but think to herself how unfortunate that it wasn’t summer.

But even just splitting like that caused the man to let out a wailing scream, sounding as if a pig was being slaughtered.

Jiang Yexun, seeing him like this, immediately took a step back, pulling Su Xiaoxiao with him. Then, with an innocent look, he raised his hand and looked at the people around them.

"You all have to testify for us! We didn’t touch them at all from start to finish," he said, looking genuinely confused.

Although no one voiced their agreement, seeing so many witnesses around, those who had originally wanted to smear Su Xiaoxiao and Jiang Yexun quickly swallowed the words they had on their tongues.

They glared at Su Xiaoxiao and Jiang Yexun, then shouted loudly, "We received a report saying that you two are carrying contraband."

"We just happened to be reporting as well. We discovered that we lost a thousand yuan. You arrived just in time to help us check who stole our money," Su Xiaoxiao immediately retorted.

The man with the armband was startled and frowned as he scolded, "What nonsense are you talking about? Who carries a thousand yuan on them these days?"

"Why not? I just came back from my family’s house after getting married. My parents and other relatives gave us money to help support our small family. Isn’t that normal?" Su Xiaoxiao replied with an innocent tone.

After all, with banks not yet interconnected across the country, you either had to send money via remittance or carry it yourself.

"Don’t think that saying this will let you off the hook," the men with armbands warned in a harsh tone.

They had come here to complete their task, not to investigate a theft case. That was the police’s job, and they didn’t want to get involved.

But Su Xiaoxiao took a step back and, with a gesture, invited them in.

"Of course, we’ll fully cooperate with your investigation, but since you’re already here, you might as well gather evidence. It’s a big case to lose a thousand yuan, don’t you think?" she said.

Considering that the average worker’s salary was around thirty yuan, a thousand yuan was indeed a big deal.

But they weren’t the police, and collecting evidence was not their job. Plus, given the identity of the people reporting the case, they were unlikely to believe that such a person would need to steal money.

If they couldn’t find evidence today, they would just let the two parties fight it out.

Having made up their minds, the men with the red armbands readily nodded.

"Alright, once we finish our inspection, we’ll also help you look into the theft. Don’t worry, this is Beijing. We won’t wrong any good person, but we won’t let any bad person off either."

Su Xiaoxiao felt relieved upon hearing this. She sincerely thanked them and let them enter.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the guesthouse staff in the crowd looking anxious, her face pale with worry.

At this point, Su Xiaoxiao didn’t have time to console her, so she silently watched as the men with the red armbands rummaged through the entire room, turning everything upside down.

Their luggage was dumped out, the bedding, the pillows, and even the cabinets were dismantled, but they found nothing.

Su Xiaoxiao waited until they exhausted their efforts and were about to give up before speaking up.

"These blankets, pillows, and cabinets aren’t ours; they’re the property of the guesthouse. You can’t hold us responsible for damaging them."

???

The men with the red armbands froze and looked at her, panting heavily.

Su Xiaoxiao, however, looked particularly aggrieved as she said, "If I hadn’t lost my thousand yuan, I wouldn’t have said this. But we’ve lost so much money that even eating has become difficult. We don’t have a choice."

Her words sounded quite reasonable, but the men with the armbands were itching to ask: If she knew these things were the property of the guesthouse and that she’d have to pay for any damage, why didn’t she speak up sooner?

Why wait until they had destroyed everything before saying something?

Although they weren’t short of money, ruining the guesthouse’s property and finding nothing would not be a pleasant matter to deal with. If it got out of hand, it would be trouble for them.
