Chapter 575: The Vacant Battalion Commander Position

Normally, for matters related to the Qiu family, he would have only received a reprimand at most. However, he ended up with a severe demerit. It seemed like things weren’t escalating, but with over a decade left before retirement, he was suddenly forced to retire this summer.

This opened up an opportunity for others in the army who had been waiting for their chance to rise. Mrs. Qiu and Qiu Yulan were also directly dismissed from their positions. The military district even feared they might cause further trouble, so they were expelled from the family compound.

Despite their arrogance, the Qiu family had still stayed within the boundaries and hadn’t been involved with any spies. They hadn’t engaged in any power-for-personal-gain activities either.

Su Xiaoxiao was satisfied with this outcome.

A few days later, Su Hongchen finally returned from Beijing. He was carrying numerous packages, all filled with gifts for his younger sister. As soon as he entered the house, he walked straight to Su Xiaoxiao, inspecting her from head to toe. Only when he confirmed that she seemed fine did he finally relax and sigh with relief.

"Thank goodness you’re okay! As soon as I got back, I heard that you were bullied by Qiu’s family. I was worried you’d do the same as always, just bear everything yourself and not let us help."

Su Xiaoxiao pouted unhappily at his words. "I’m not a pushover anymore. And I did it on purpose, so they wouldn’t keep making a scene at our place and give others any excuse to come here and stir up trouble."

"Hmm?" Su Hongchen looked at her in confusion, then immediately understood her point, his face turning dark.

Some things in the military were supposed to be kept secret, but certain people had surprisingly detailed knowledge of it.

"Well, forget about those people. This time, it’s my fault for not realizing their petty tricks." Su Hongchen apologized with a guilty tone. But then his lips curled into a smile, "But, in the end, it was you who made this possible. Because of you, I got a much better opportunity than I expected."

"What do you mean?" Su Xiaoxiao tilted her head, confused.

Su Hongchen’s smile widened as he explained, "I was planning on transferring to Beijing because there was a vice battalion commander vacancy there. The battalion commander position here seemed like it would be stuck for a while. But now, with Qiu’s battalion commander retiring in June, the position will open up, and I can take it directly without waiting any longer."

Su Xiaoxiao’s eyes lit up with excitement. "Really?"

Su Hongchen nodded, his smile deepening. "I knew it! My sister is truly my lucky star. Not only did you save my life and helped me become a vice battalion commander, but now you’ve solved the promotion problem too."

"That’s amazing!" Su Xiaoxiao said, her face gleaming with joy. But then her expression became more serious. "But there will definitely be many people watching you now. Not necessarily looking for reasons to bring you down, but if you make any mistake, they will definitely magnify it. Brother, I think your days ahead might be tough."

"Don’t worry about it. If I’m aiming for a promotion, I’m ready for the scrutiny," Su Hongchen replied with a light knock on his sister’s head.

Su Xiaoxiao nodded, realizing her brother was more than capable. Even without her, he would have risen through the ranks quickly.

Once everything was settled for Su Hongchen, Su Xiaoxiao turned her attention back to Jiang Yexun and her brother-in-law. She didn’t stay long at the military district and quickly bought a ticket for the next day to return to her unit.

Su Hongchen drove them to the station, unloading all the gifts he had bought. He had brought her fabric, dresses, imported shoes, bags, pearl jewelry, and even maternity clothes.

"This is the milk powder ticket I swapped with some colleagues from the army. There are twenty tickets, and they’re only valid for six months. Make sure you drink at least three cups of milk every day, don’t be stingy, or else you’ll waste them," he handed a stack of milk powder tickets to Su Xiaoxiao.

Jiang Yexun, standing beside them, spoke in a deep voice, "Big Brother, don’t worry, I’ll keep an eye on Xiaoxiao. And don’t worry about the milk powder tickets, I have a way to get more."

Before he could finish, Su Hongchen shot him a glare, "My sister is already pregnant. Don’t make things harder for her. And don’t forget, your wife is almost due too. When the three of you are all pregnant, we’ll pitch in together. It’s better than running out of tickets at the last minute."

Jiang Yexun was caught off guard. He hadn’t realized his brother-in-law was so attentive, even remembering his own sister’s situation.

Su Hongchen, feeling a little awkward under Jiang Yexun’s gaze, coldly said, "What’s with that look? Our families are one now. We need to help each other."

"Thanks, Brother!" Jiang Yexun’s voice cracked slightly as he thanked him.

Su Hongchen didn’t respond, his gaze turning to Su Xiaoxiao, his eyes filled with concern.

There had been a particularly dangerous mission recently, but he noticed that her physical abilities and senses had significantly improved. After everything that had happened in the past six months, he was certain that his sister had experienced some unimaginable adventure.

However, no matter what had happened, Su Hongchen was certain of one thing: the person standing in front of him was the little sister he had raised from childhood.

With a long, gentle blink, Su Hongchen gave her a serious warning, "Xiaoxiao, I know you’re capable, but no matter what happens, don’t let your compassion overwhelm your judgment. Even if you want to help someone who’s good, the most important thing is to never put yourself in danger."

"I know!" Su Xiaoxiao nodded obediently.

But then she realized there was something else in his words. She stared at him in shock, unable to believe what she was hearing.

Su Hongchen chuckled softly, "Don’t be so surprised. I’ve been in the army for years. But no matter what, you will always be the most important person to me."

"Brother!" Su Xiaoxiao’s eyes welled up with tears, and she hugged him tightly.

But then she quickly released him and rummaged through her bag. After a while, she pulled out a rectangular wooden box. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞

"Brother, this is a 50-year-old ginseng. It’s not as effective as a century-old one, but it can still save your life. Don’t hold back. I’ll get you more when I get my hands on some 100-year-old ones."

Su Xiaoxiao said, pulling out a small bottle that contained twenty black pills.

"These are special life-saving pills. If you get injured, crush them and apply them to the wound, then swallow one. They can keep you alive even with severe injuries. But don’t mass-produce them, and only use them in extreme situations. Don’t give them to others unless absolutely necessary."

She explained, warning him in detail about the precious ingredients she used to make the pills, using Spirit Spring Water, 50-year-old wild ginseng, and other rare herbs. She couldn’t advertise them, but if soldiers were in danger, she wouldn’t hesitate to offer them help first.
