Chapter 589: "If You Don’t Care, Just Send It to the Public Security Bureau"

Whether it’s from Su Xiaoxiao’s family or her in-laws, her opinion has always been the deciding factor. So when Su Xiaoxiao said she didn’t want the child, they immediately dressed the crying baby and went straight to the village chief’s house.

Upon hearing the story about the child’s origins, the village chief’s expression darkened.

"This is just nonsense! Who abandons a child just because they can’t afford to raise it?" Kong Dongfeng was so angry he nearly lost his composure. But with over three hundred households in the village, and so many young wives of childbearing age, he couldn’t even remember who had a baby recently. It was possible the child had been abandoned by someone from another village, making the investigation even harder.

However, seeing Jiang Yexun’s darkened face, Kong Dongfeng swallowed back the words he had been about to say.

"I’ll go ask my wife; she’s usually close with the other women in the village. She might know something," Kong Dongfeng quickly said as he led them inside.

It was only 8:30 PM, and though it was already dark outside, the radio was still broadcasting storytelling programs.

The Kong family was sitting around the stove, roasting sweet potatoes and peanuts. When they entered, everyone looked over.

Su Xiaoxiao didn’t recognize most of the people in the village, but she immediately spotted the youngest son of the village chief sitting near the stove.

Unlike the others, who appeared friendly and warm, this man radiated a sense of danger. The look in his eyes when he glanced at Su Xiaoxiao was filled with ill intent, despite his attempt to mask it.

Although he was trying his best to hide it, it was clear that someone with his experience couldn’t be deceived that easily.

Jiang Yexun stepped forward, blocking the man’s gaze, his own eyes sharpening with cold intensity. The man quickly averted his gaze.

Kong Dongfeng noticed the silent exchange between them and the vein in his forehead twitched. However, there was nothing he could do; he pretended not to see anything.

"Chunni, do you recognize this child? He’s a boy. Also, do you know if any family in the village has had a baby in the past month? We need to find out as soon as possible," Kong Dongfeng asked.

His wife leaned forward to take a closer look, then shook her head apologetically. "I don’t recognize this child. As for whether anyone in the village has given birth recently, I’m not sure. I’ve been meaning to rest since work starts soon and haven’t visited anyone else’s house lately."

"How about we leave the child here for the night, and tomorrow we can broadcast the news to ask around?" Aunt Guo suggested.

But Kong Dongfeng’s wife immediately shook her head. "That won’t do! A baby this young needs to be fed, and we don’t have any milk to give him. What if he starves?"

"Then we’ll take the baby to the public security bureau tonight," Su Xiaoxiao suggested.

At first, she had intended to wait until morning, but for some reason, she just didn’t want this strange child in her home.

"Alright, I’ll go get Tiewa and Xingzhi and have them stay at our place for the night. We’ll head to the city directly," Jiang Yexun agreed, then turned to Kong Dongfeng and apologized. "Sorry to trouble you so late, village chief."

"..." Kong Dongfeng opened his mouth but didn’t know how to advise them.

Just as Jiang Yexun and the others were about to leave with the child, Kong Dongfeng’s wife hurried over and said, "Why are you in such a rush to send the baby away? How about waiting until morning? We can ask around at every household tomorrow. I know your family is doing well, and milk powder shouldn’t be hard to come by. You can feed him for the night."

"No! The child keeps crying, and I don’t know how many times he’ll wake up crying tonight. Asking around every house in the village is too much trouble, and besides, investigating isn’t our job," Su Xiaoxiao refused angrily, pursing her red lips.

The other women in the Kong family looked displeased when they heard this. "This is our village’s problem. If we send it to the public security bureau, things will get even more complicated. Abandoning a baby is a crime."

"So what? It’s not our fault. Besides, our Hong Feng Production Team has had so many problems that we haven’t qualified as the advanced team for the past three years. We’re used to it. Who told them to leave this baby at my doorstep?" Su Xiaoxiao snapped with a defiant look.

The others furrowed their brows, seeing Su Xiaoxiao’s firm stance.

"Well, if we send it to the public security bureau and they don’t find out where it came from, the baby will just end up in an orphanage. How pitiful would that be? Xiaoxiao, your family is doing well, and you’re not lacking food. This baby has good looks, and he seems like a good child. Why don’t you just adopt him? He won’t remember anything at that age, and you’ll raise him as your own. In the future, he’ll be filial to you too." Kong Dongfeng’s wife smiled as she tried to persuade them.

Before she finished speaking, the three of them shot her fierce glares.

Before Aunt Guo or Jiang Yexun could get angry, Su Xiaoxiao gritted her teeth and said, "Why should I take someone else’s child just because my family is well off? We just returned, and now we’re being dumped with a child. If this continues, will our home become an orphanage? Besides, I’m not infertile. Why should I raise someone else’s kid? Let someone else take care of me. And parents who can abandon their child like this clearly have a cold-blooded nature. Do you expect such a child to grow up and be filial to me? I’d rather adopt a dog."

"Alright, don’t be upset. I’ll send the child away right now. We won’t keep him," Jiang Yexun quickly comforted, patting her head gently.

Su Xiaoxiao instinctively leaned into him but immediately controlled her emotions, glaring at him. Why does he always have to do things like this? 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

Kong Dongfeng’s wife, seeing them heading for the door, bit her lip and chased after them.

"The night is still young. How about you wait here for a bit? My two daughters-in-law and I can ask around at the other houses, and once we find out, we can take you there."

Su Xiaoxiao narrowed her eyes, sizing her up. Her clear and piercing gaze made Kong Dongfeng’s wife feel like all her thoughts had been laid bare.

Instinctively, Kong Dongfeng’s wife shrank back, like a quail.

Just when she thought Su Xiaoxiao would refuse, Su Xiaoxiao surprised her by agreeing, "Alright, we’ll stay here and wait."

"No problem, no problem! You sit by the stove and warm up. We’ll be back soon," Kong Dongfeng’s wife hurriedly said, signaling for her sons and daughters-in-law to leave.

Kong Dongfeng didn’t follow them but instead sat down next to Jiang Yexun and Su Xiaoxiao.

"You’ve been living apart from Old Jiang since you returned. Are you really planning to stay angry with him forever? After all, you’re family. It’s better to make peace," Kong Dongfeng said, carefully trying to advise them.
