Chapter 98: What Medicine Did She Give Her Brother?

"Brother Chen, don’t overexert yourself. When the wound opens up later, Xiaoxiao will start crying again," Jiang Yexun said, carrying him into the bathroom.

Su Xiaoxiao snuck a glance at her brother’s dark face and secretly awarded Jiang Yexun some brownie points in her heart. Why did he have to use the simplest princess carry when there were so many other options? It made her brother look like an oppressed bride. She was sure that just for this, her brother would have another reason to scold him.

After taking care of some important business for about ten minutes and helping Su Hongchen with his morning routine, Jiang Yexun assisted him out of the bathroom. However, when he offered to do more, Su Hongchen firmly declined. "No need, I’m feeling much better now. You can go and do your thing."

Jiang Yexun caught a hint of annoyance in Su Hongchen’s tone but didn’t pay it much mind. He smiled slightly and tilted the covers over Su Hongchen. "Brother Chen, take care of yourself as well as Xiaoxiao. I’ll go to the supply and marketing cooperative to buy groceries and then return to the guesthouse. I’ll remember to make porridge for you, and you two can wait for me to bring lunch."

Standing by the hospital bed, Jiang Yexun raised the head of Su Hongchen’s bed and whispered in his ear. Su Hongchen waved his hand impatiently. "Alright, go on! Xiaoxiao is my sister, and I’ve taken care of her since she was a child. I’m better at it than you."

Receiving such a lack of appreciation from his future brother-in-law, Jiang Yexun sighed and patted Su Hongchen’s leg before reluctantly leaving the room.

After the door closed, Su Hongchen couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow and ask, "Is he always so affectionate?"

"No! He’s trying to impress you. But he does talk to me this way all the time. He’s just more succinct when he talks to other people," Su Xiaoxiao recalled and said with a sweet smile.

Seeing her like this, Su Hongchen felt even more irritated. What a slick guy! He knew how to seduce his sister so easily.

"If he ever talks to you in a cold and distant manner, can you handle it?" Su Hongchen asked in a cold tone.

However, Su Xiaoxiao, upon hearing him, responded with a particularly smug shake of her head, "No! He could never treat me like that."

"You fool! In this world, no one can fake it forever. He’s warm to you now, which is why he talks so much. But his way of interacting with others might be closer to how it’ll be after you’ve been married for a few years," Su Hongchen lectured her, frustrated.

Su Xiaoxiao winced in pain, letting out a cry. She raised her head, looking at Su Hongchen with a particularly pitiful expression.

Su Hongchen pursed his lips and, after a while, reluctantly compromised. "Alright, I was wrong. Come here; let me take a look."

Su Xiaoxiao put her hand down, revealing her flushed forehead. But she didn’t approach Su Hongchen. She reached out and touched it herself. "It’s fine. It’ll be okay in a while. Brother, you should have your porridge first."

She opened the lunchbox and took a spoonful of lukewarm porridge, bringing it to her brother’s mouth. After watching Su Hongchen take a few bites, she continued, "I believe he won’t change after we get married, and I trust you not to let me be wronged at any time. If someone bullies me, I’ll cry and come to you for help immediately. I won’t suffer in silence."

"That’s more like it," Su Hongchen said, nodding in satisfaction. After taking a few more spoonfuls of porridge, he suddenly realized that the taste was better than the meals he had eaten over the past few days.

"Did you both wake up early to buy this from the state-owned restaurant?" He furrowed his brow.

The state-owned restaurant was in the opposite direction from the hospital. It took twenty minutes to walk from the guesthouse to the hospital and half an hour from the guesthouse to the state-owned restaurant, meaning they spent an additional fifty minutes to buy this meal.

This made Su Hongchen feel a bit distressed.

Su Xiaoxiao, who didn’t know anything about this, shook her head. "It was Brother Yexun who woke up early to buy it. I ate first after washing up, and he brought this one specifically for you. He thinks the hospital canteen is too crowded and unsanitary, so he didn’t want us to eat there."

Su Hongchen didn’t expect this answer at all, and his annoyance toward Jiang Yexun lessened a bit. After all, it was quite rare for a man from a northern village to have such attention to detail.

But the man could only be spared a small amount of disapproval. Anything more than that would be unacceptable.

"Commander Su, I’m here to administer your medication today," a nurse walked in carrying a metal tray.

Upon seeing Su Xiaoxiao sitting by the hospital bed, the nurse was startled. However, Su Xiaoxiao’s reaction was even more pronounced, as her face drained of color in an instant. The abrupt change alarmed Su Hongchen, and he immediately furrowed his brows.

"What’s wrong?" he inquired with concern, once he saw the nurse’s cautious look, after briefly sizing her up.

"She suddenly entered the room and startled me," Su Xiaoxiao shook her head, moving away a little to make room for the nurse.

"Commander Su, who is this?" The nurse also seemed a bit curious as she looked at Su Xiaoxiao.

"She’s my sister," Su Hongchen responded, not keen on engaging with the nurse. If it weren’t for the daily necessity of administering injections and medication, he would have asked the nurse to leave earlier. He didn’t like anyone who made his sister uncomfortable.

The nurse, who had apparently not anticipated Su Hongchen’s sudden coldness, appeared somewhat frozen with a forced smile on her face. She placed the tray on the bedside table and picked up a glass vial of medication. The clear "pop" sound pierced Su Xiaoxiao’s heart, much like the feeling she had when Jiang Yexun was in danger on the mountain not too long ago.

She stared at the nurse, who drew the medication into a syringe, intending to inject her brother. Then, suddenly, she extended her hand, grabbing the nurse’s wrist.

"What’s in it?" she asked.

The nurse’s lips twitched, and she hesitated before responding. "This is an antibiotic used to kill or suppress pathogenic bacteria, serving as an antibacterial agent."

"My brother has been taking this for a week now. Why does he still need it? Prolonged use or excessive amounts of antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance, making treatment more difficult and potentially causing multiple infections," Su Xiaoxiao said, holding the nurse’s hand even tighter.

Upon hearing her sister’s words, Su Hongchen immediately realized that something was amiss. He was about to sit up, but the nurse suddenly twisted her wrist and thrust the needle directly into Su Xiaoxiao’s artery.

Su Xiaoxiao quickly released her grip, but the needle tip was still inside her wrist, leaving a long trail of blood.

Seeing that the nurse was attempting to escape, Su Xiaoxiao chased after her, grabbing her shoulder. However, her hand that had been pricked by the needle couldn’t exert much force.

Just when the nurse had a triumphant smile, thinking that she could escape this time, Su Xiaoxiao kicked her in the calf. There was a sensitive nerve in that area, and if kicked too hard, it would be quite painful. So, Su Xiaoxiao didn’t hold back on her kick.

As a result, the nurse collapsed to the ground with a loud thud, clutching her leg and crying out in pain.

"How’s your hand?" Su Hongchen, trying to sit up with great effort, walked over to Su Xiaoxiao and grabbed her wrist.

"Brother, you should sit back in bed quickly and avoid tearing open your wound," Su Xiaoxiao hurriedly reached out to support him. However, when she exerted a little force, the thin thread-like wound spurted a streak of crimson blood.

Su Hongchen’s complexion changed, and Su Xiaoxiao was also startled. Wasn’t this blood abnormal? It looked fake, like something from a low-quality movie.

While Su Xiaoxiao was still puzzling over it, her hand was already covering the wound. However, the fresh blood quickly gushed out through her fingers.
