Chapter 121: 121: The first Assignment- Part 2

Liam immediately narrowed his eyes. A magical phenomenon? In the city?

Something about this felt... off.

As if the academy was purposely pushing students into something bigger than just a simple research project.

Seraphina seemed to notice it too. "Interesting. This isn’t just some normal group assignment."

Zane chuckled. "Well, this just got a whole lot more fun."

Liam, however, wasn’t so sure.

Because as soon as the teacher revealed the leads they could investigate, one of the names stood out to him immediately—

"Recent reports of shadowy entities appearing near the academy."

Liam’s stomach twisted.

Shadowy entities... just like the one Bianca had summoned.

Coincidence?

He doubted it.

"So, how are we going to do it? Are we all going to meet up tomorrow? It is our day off, so we get some time to investigate around."

Zane asked in an excited voice. He looked like someone who was too hyper and had too much energy. Just looking at him was enough to tell Liam that this man had never sat still in his life.

It made one wonder how he had gotten into the academy. After all, magic required some amount of concentration. Especially if you were not used to casting magic regularly.

"Hey Liam, this child must be the special kind. Either that, or retarted. I cannot tell which one is worse."

Asger raised his head from Liam’s shoulder to complain. He was currently in his lizard form and had a spell on him that only allowed Liam to hear his voice.

Liam almost laughed out loud when he heard Asger’s words, but he quickly controlled his expression so that he wouldn’t offend someone.

Both Asger and Seraphina looked at him with eager eyes, awaiting Asger’s answer.

"Well, since I have nothing to do tomorrow, I would love to come with you. Is there anything specific we are going to look at?"

Liam asked, wanting to be sure. The pair in front of him grinned before looking at Liam with twinkling eyes. freeweɓnovel~cѳm

"Ah, don’t worry about that. You can leave that up to us to decide tomorrow. For now, just make sure you reach the destination on time."

The pair cheerfully told Liam and the alarm bells in his mind rang louder and louder.

Suddenly, he was not sure if this ’group assignment’ business was something he should get involved in, but it was too late to back out now either.

"Don’t feel so worried, Liam. If anything happens, I will take care of it. No one gets to make my human worries except me."

Asger assured Liam and somehow, it felt more like a warning than reassurance. Liam could only hope that things would calm down, but he was not sure how much it would help.

Liam returned home that evening, his mind filled with questions.

The strange reaction of Seraphina and Zane, the assignment itself, and the eerie coincidence of shadowy entities appearing near the academy—it all felt too convenient.

"Those two humans feel fishy. You better keep your distance from them, Liam."

Asher spoke as soon as they reached home and Liam gave him a raised eyebrow of suspicion for his words.

"You want me to be careful? Didn’t you tell me that you would protect me, no matter what? What happened to your promise?"

Liam asked in a frank voice and the half-dragon got flustered quite easily.

"Of course, I will do that as well. But you need to learn to be cautious! Don’t trust humans as easily as you usually do. Most of them are out to get you."

Asger huffed as he spoke. He also settled quite nicely on Liam’s shoulder and the weight was beginning to get annoying.

So Liam reached out to grab Asger off his shoulder and hold him in his arms before entering home. He wanted to give his shoulder some time to relax.

He also needed to talk to Elder Erin about this assignment. Somehow, it was bothering him to have such an assignment.

As soon as he stepped inside, Elder Erin and Bianca were seated in the living room, deep in discussion. The moment Liam entered, they both turned to him expectantly.

Elder Erin, the wise and seemingly unshakable man who had taken care of Liam, smiled in his usual way. Bianca, on the other hand, looked more serious than usual.

Liam wasted no time.

"I got assigned a group project today at the academy. It involves investigating magical phenomena around the city."

Elder Erin hummed, setting down the book he had been reading.

"That sounds like a good learning experience. What topics do you have to choose from? Can I see the list provided to you?"

Liam listed out the sub-topics the teacher had given them, but when he mentioned the shadowy entities, he caught the subtle exchange of glances between Elder Erin and Bianca.

It lasted only a second. But Liam saw it and his instincts screamed at him that he was right.

They know something and that something likely had big repercussions.

Liam narrowed his eyes.

"What was that about?"

Bianca straightened up.

"Nothing. It’s just a... strange topic for the academy to assign students, don’t you think? Especially the first years. Usually, the topics are more inclined to academic learning than any practical use."

"Exactly. Which is why I want to know why you two are acting weird about it. Is there some hidden danger associated with it?"

Elder Erin chuckled, though there was a tightness in his voice.

"Liam, you’re overthinking things. It’s probably just an exercise for practical experience. Nothing more. You should enjoy your time in the academy since it would likely not be long."

Liam didn’t believe him.

Still, pushing too hard would only make them retreat further. He exhaled sharply and leaned back.

"Fine. Just don’t expect me to believe you."

Asger, still in his lizard form, curled around Liam’s shoulders, whispering so only he could hear.

"They’re hiding something. Keep an eye out."

Liam didn’t need the warning—he already knew.
