Chapter 131: 131: Issue Resolved- Part 1

The body thrashing on the floor in front of Liam felt like it was broken. Zane tried to reach his hand out to beg for help, but neither Liam nor Ethan moved to help him.

"H-Help me! Please, help me—!"

Zane’s voice grew fainter and fainter by the second, and even Liam felt sorry for him. He turned around to look at Ethan to ask if they could stop, but the expression on Ethan’s face stopped him.

The undiluted joy and acceptance on Ethan’s face was something Liam had never seen a human show before. It made his senses yell at him to keep watching what would happen next.

"Oi, human... I have a bad feeling about this. You should take a step back right now before you end up getting caught in what is happening," Asger reminded Liam as the half-dragon dug his nails into Liam’s shoulder.

Even Asger was focused solely on what was happening in front of him, and his eyes refused to move away from the half-dead man thrashing on the floor.

Liam watched from the sidelines as Zane absorbed more and more magic, his body twisting and contorting in unnatural ways.

His skin darkened to an ashen hue, veins glowing an eerie blue as they pulsed with unstable energy.

His limbs elongated, fingers sharpening into claws, and his once human-like eyes turned pitch black, swallowing all light.

Liam took a cautious step back, his instincts screaming at him to be ready for anything.

"What the hell is happening to him? What kind of mistake did you make?"

He asked, his voice sharp as he turned to Ethan.

Ethan, standing a few feet away, looked completely unhinged. A wild grin spread across his face, his eyes gleaming with something close to madness.

"Mistake? Oh, Liam, you misunderstand. This isn’t a mistake. This is perfection! This is what I’ve been working toward all this time!"

He let out a breathless chuckle, stepping closer to the rampaging creature that had once been Zane.

"Thanks to you, he has finally reached his true form."

Liam’s stomach twisted at Ethan’s words.

His gaze flickered back to Zane—or whatever he had become.

The air around them vibrated with the sheer intensity of Zane’s unstable magic, and it was clear that whatever process he had undergone had cost him his sanity.

"This isn’t right. He’s losing control. You can’t just—"

Liam muttered, stepping forward as if he could somehow pull Zane back from the abyss he was descending into.

His instincts flared. Without thinking, Liam dodged to the side just in time to avoid a clawed swipe aimed directly at his head.

The force of the strike sent a shockwave rippling through the air, leaving deep gashes in the stone floor where Liam had been standing mere moments ago.

Liam’s breath hitched. That attack would have torn him apart.

Zane let out a guttural, inhuman growl, his transformed body twitching violently. His erratic movements were completely unlike the controlled, calculated Zane Liam had known before.

Ethan, on the other hand, looked positively delighted.

"Yes! Look at him, Liam! This is the ultimate life form! The pinnacle of magical evolution! With this, I have constructed a being that surpasses all others!"

Liam turned to him with a glare.

"Are you insane? That thing isn’t a ’pinnacle of evolution,’ it’s an abomination! You can’t control something like this! Look at him—he’s already out of control!"

Ethan’s expression darkened, his once ecstatic smile fading into something cold and menacing.

"You still don’t get it, do you? Zane is merely the first. I’ve spent years perfecting this method. I know exactly how to control him. And now, I’ll prove it."

He stepped forward, his hands glowing with a faint magical aura.

Liam barely had time to react before Ethan reached out, his magic lashing toward Zane like invisible strings meant to bind the monster under his command.

At first, it seemed to work. Zane’s thrashing stilled, his massive, monstrous body freezing in place. A flicker of recognition returned to his blackened eyes as if he was coming back to himself.

For a moment, Liam thought Ethan might actually be telling the truth. Maybe he really did have control over Zane’s form.

But then, something shifted.

The glow around Ethan’s hands wavered. His smug expression faltered.

Zane let out a low growl, then twitched—once, twice—before violently breaking free of Ethan’s control. The magical tethers snapped like frail threads, and suddenly, Ethan was the one stumbling back in horror.

"No, no, no! That’s not supposed to—"

Zane let out an ear-splitting roar. His body convulsed before he launched himself toward Ethan with terrifying speed.

Liam moved on instinct. He barely understood why he was doing it, but he found himself sprinting forward, intercepting Zane before he could reach Ethan.

With all the magic he could muster, he slammed a reinforced barrier between the two of them.

Zane crashed into the barrier with a force that sent Liam skidding backward, the impact rattling through his entire body. The magical shield held, but cracks splintered along its surface.

Ethan, now pale and trembling, scrambled back in horror.

"T-This is impossible... I made him perfect! I should be able to control him! H-He—"

Liam let out a sharp breath.

"Well, congratulations, genius. You just created something even you can’t stop."

Ethan shook his head frantically.

"No, no, no! I won’t let this—"

Zane let out another monstrous roar, the sheer intensity of it shaking the ground beneath them. His magic was only growing more unstable, his body expanding, distorting further.

Liam clenched his jaw. He had to do something before Zane lost what little control he had left.

"Asger!"

Liam called out.

A soft sigh echoed in his mind.

"I was wondering when you’d finally call for me."

In an instant, Asger’s form manifested beside Liam, the half-dragon looking as unimpressed as ever, though his golden eyes gleamed with anticipation.

"That thing needs to be stopped before he tears this place apart."

Liam gestured toward Zane.

Asger clicked his tongue.

"Tsk. I told you not to trust those humans. And now look what’s happened." Despite his words, he cracked his knuckles, his dragon-like wings unfurling slightly. "Fine. I’ll handle it."

Ethan suddenly lunged forward, grabbing Liam’s arm.

"Wait! Don’t kill him! I—I can still fix this!"

His expression was desperate now, his earlier confidence shattered.

Liam yanked his arm away.

"You had your chance. Now stay out of the way unless you want to get hurt."
