Chapter 100: Ch:100 The Entry Fee

Daniel lifted his gaze, eyes locked on hers. His hand rested on his thigh, curled into a tight fist, while his mind churned with mounting frustration.

’Ten gold coins? Are you fucking serious,’ he thought, pushing himself up from the chair without a word.

Daniel turned toward the exit. Tina picked up the quill and began writing on the parchment, but as he took a step forward, he suddenly spun around and bolted toward the treatment room.

"Hey!" Tina shouted, springing to her feet.

But it was too late.

Daniel had already stormed into the room. Before him sat a woman behind a polished dark wooden table, her hand moving steadily across the parchment with a quill.

She lifted her chin, meeting his gaze.

"Are you Lady Gavina?" Daniel asked.

She nodded softly. "Yes."

Meanwhile, Tina burst into the room and grabbed Daniel’s wrist, pulling with all her strength. But to her surprise, she couldn’t move him.

"What’s wrong, Tina. Why are you grabbing his hand?" Gavina asked, her brow furrowed in confusion.

Tina instantly withdrew her hand and bowed respectfully, like a chameleon shifting its colors.

"Lady Gavina, this young man hasn’t paid his entry fee," she said, speaking respectfully.

Gavina turned her gaze toward Daniel.

"No, no. I’m here to ask about potions, not treatment," Daniel said, his tone steady.

"See... Lady Gavina, he isn’t here for treatment," Tina interjected. "He’s just here to waste your precious time."

For a tense minute, they sparred in front of Gavina. Tina’s voice rang sharp and loud, each word a desperate bid to dominate the conversation. Daniel, by contrast, stayed composed, his words measured and deliberate, spilling only what was necessary. Finally,

Gavina’s patience snapped.

She raised a hand, silencing them both with a single, commanding glance.

"Tina, please return to your counter, and young man, have a seat," she said softly.

Tina immediately obeyed, nodding with a forced smile. "Yes, Lady Gavina."

She stepped out of the treatment room, leaving Daniel alone with Gavina.

The room was quiet and immaculately maintained, the cement walls painted a clean white. Behind her, a glass window let in soft light, while to her left, a massive wooden shelf held rows of colorful vials and glass jars. On her right stood a simple single bed for injured patients to rest.

Daniel sat calmly in the chair before her, taking in the orderly surroundings.

"Yes, young man. What do you want to ask about potions," Gavina asked softly.

Daniel glanced at her. She wore a simple brown robe, her eyes sharp as flint, her black hair smooth and gleaming. Golden earrings dangled from her ears, and her lips glowed a warm red. But her breasts were flat, her hips devoid of curves.

He felt no attraction to her body.

"Is there a potion that can reduce pain, or increase pain tolerance?" Daniel asked, folding his hands together.

She froze, her brow narrowing in surprise.

’A potion for pain tolerance? What does he mean by that? I’ve heard of healing potions, mana potions, strength potions, but a potion for pain? Never heard of it,’ she thought.

"No, young man, there is no such potion," she replied warmly. "But is it physical pain, or mental pain, that you mean?"

"Umm... physical," Daniel said.

"If it’s physical, then..." she murmured, rising from her chair.

Gavina walked to the shelf and carefully retrieved a red vial, a glass jar filled with white-blue dust that sparkled like tiny stars, and an empty potion bottle.

She used the empty bottle as a container, dropped in a single drop from the red vial, then mixed it with the shimmering bluish dust until it was evenly blended.

Meanwhile, Daniel took the opportunity to study her.

"Status," he murmured under his breath.

Within a few minutes, the potion was complete.

"Here," she said, setting it gently on the table.

Daniel picked it up and examined it closely. The bottle was rectangular in shape, sealed with a cork. Inside, red liquid shimmered softly, with tiny white particles floating within.

"If it’s physical pain, then a healing potion would be the better option," she said warmly. "Besides, I don’t think one potion will be enough."

Gavina turned back to the shelf, retrieved two more empty potion bottles, and began mixing again.

In the meantime, Daniel recalled the moment the black-hooded man had handed him a flask filled with red liquid. It looked exactly like the one he was holding now, the same crimson shade, the same faint swirl within.

’If I remember correctly, the one I drank did help me recover from my injuries, even my dislocated arm,’ he thought, gripping the bottle tightly. ’But after I chant the spell, my body loses control and... So what’s the point of having a healing potion if I can’t even drink it when I need it?’

*Clink-Click*

Gavina placed two more healing potions on the table and calmly took her seat.

"Three healing potions should be enough for your journey," she said softly.

Daniel glanced at her. "How much... for the three healing potions?"

Gavina chuckled softly, crossing her arms and giving a small wave. "Oh... no, no. They’re free, young man. After all, we shamans bear a responsibility to humanity."

"We? Wait... are you one as well?"

She nodded softly. "Yes. Now take this as a gift and work hard as much as you can, young man."

*Ting-Ting*

She rang the small bell on the table.

Daniel carefully tucked the potions into his satchel and walked toward the door. Just as he reached it, Tina entered and held it open for him.

But Daniel paused and turned back, wanting to ask one final question.

"Lady Gavina, what element do you wield?" Daniel asked, with a curious expression.

Gavina smiled at him. "Violet."

Before he could say another word, Tina pushed him out of the room, and he didn’t resist.

"You think you’re smart, huh? Meeting with her without even paying. Next time, don’t think you can, ahh!"

*Thud*

Tina fell to the floor.

Daniel immediately crouched and reached for her arm to help her up, but she yanked it away.

"Don’t touch me," she snapped, pushing herself to her feet.

Daniel turned his face away, rose silently, and calmly walked out of the infirmary. As he stepped into the afternoon sun, another person brushed past him and entered inside.

Another line of eleven people had already formed outside, some elderly men and some women waiting patiently.

’Heh... that big mouth bitch. Did you really think I’d just walk away without getting a strand of your hair?’ he thought, rubbing the lock of Tina’s hair hidden inside his pouch.

As Tina continued ranting, she accidentally crossed one leg over the other in a misstep, causing her to stumble and fall to the ground.

While she was still recovering from the fall, he swiftly pulled out a small pair of mini shear, and snipped a strand of her long hair, slipping it into his pouch before offering her a hand.

...

"I’m pretty sure that bitch takes a lot in commissions just by sitting at the counter," he muttered as he walked toward his home.

Daniel glanced at the potions in his satchel. The reason Gavina had given him three instead of one lay hidden in the shadows of her dark past.

As he walked calmly, a familiar figure approached from the opposite direction. Daniel narrowed his eyes, as if trying to remember where he had seen the guy before.

They stopped in front of each other, neither speaking, as if waiting for the other to break the silence.

At last, the guy spoke first, calling out to him.

"Ow, Daniel. You survived," he said, with a smirk.

The moment he heard the voice, a flood of memories flashed before his eyes.

The past resurfaced.

The evening when the previous Daniel had agreed to a dare for money. That same guy, along with a few others, had made him perform humiliating tasks for their amusement. 𝚏𝕣𝐞𝗲𝐰𝕖𝐛𝐧𝕠𝕧𝚎𝚕.𝐜𝚘𝗺

In the end, they tossed the gold coins near the edge of a cliff, letting them scatter down the sloping ground.

As he bent down to pick them up, someone kicked him from behind. He lost his footing and rolled down the steep decline, crashing through brush and dirt until he tumbled into the forest below, where the faravarks found him.

*Snap-Snap*

"Ha... you’re still as stupid as your stupid father," he taunted.

"Status," he whispered under his breath.

"What do you want from me, Krin?" Daniel replied with a neutral face.

"Huh? You can talk now?" Krin laughed, raising an eyebrow in mock surprise. "At least something’s changed in the past few months. Tell me Daniel, do you want another dare, or are you already scared? Heh..."
