Chapter 12: Chapter 12: The time has come to leave

Early in the morning, at 6:30.

At the Armstrong family home on Earth, sunlight had just awakened on the horizon.

Luan had already finished his first morning workout and was preparing breakfast in the kitchen.

The sound of water dripping through the filter hummed softly.

In the frying pan, the eggs sizzled.

...

After breakfast, Luan trained, produced wool, and was about to lie down to enter the Book of a Thousand Lives when his smartphone vibrated on the nightstand.

Instinctively, he picked it up and saw it was a message from an unknown number.

Curious, he opened it:

[You blocked me? Of course you blocked me... Luan, oh, Luan... Don’t let me see you on the street, otherwise... I’m going to kill you!]

A veiled threat.

Without mentioning names, or why it seemed to hate him so much, but Luan was almost certain who the sender of this message was.

’Ricardo... Looks like he liked my gift from a few days ago so much that he still can’t forget it.’ Luan thought with a cold smile: ’Heh, he betrayed me and still dares to play the victim. The foolish past ’me’... How didn’t he see that this ’friend’ was so fake?’

With a disdainful snort, he simply set it aside and closed his eyes as he placed the smartphone back on the nightstand.

...

Luan’s routine continued going back and forth from the Book of a Thousand Lives.

The days passed, and soon two years had gone by in the Book of a Thousand Lives.

Luan was now 17 years old and Catharina 14 years old.

Luan’s physical strength had increased considerably.

This began to give him confidence to kill Lv1 monsters with his bare hands.

However, the risk was still there.

For now, he wasn’t in that much of a hurry.

Unlike before, thanks to the ’bug’ he had found, his mother stopped doing overtime; even though, just as he had imagined, she didn’t quit the job, the simple fact that he no longer had to race against the wind already loosened the pressure a bit, allowing him to breathe a little, without having the same urgency as before.

That said, he continued with the goal of becoming stronger and reading many books, both to find a solution for his twin sister and because there were many contents in different books about things that had not yet been explored on Earth.

Things that in the future he might come to explore.

...

Luan looked at Catharina who was standing in front of him, fidgeting a little.

She had a cold and cute expression at the same time.

Unlike before, the white fox tail and pair of ears had disappeared.

Obviously, it wasn’t something eternal, but rather the result of Catharina’s own hard work and sweat.

However, even though she managed to make the tail and ears disappear, she wasn’t able to do the same with her eyes and teeth.

That was basically her natural appearance, while the ears and tail had not yet fully become part of her original look, which is why she was still able to make them disappear, but...

*Poof*

In Luan’s mind, he imagined clouds of smoke coming out from Catharina’s head and back as the white fox tail and ears returned.

"Very good." Luan clapped softly with a smile: "This time, that was your record time. This time, it lasted 43 minutes."

Hearing this, Catharina relaxed a little, although she felt a bit frustrated deep down: "It’s still not enough. I need to work harder!"

Her voice was firm.

Luan didn’t doubt her efforts.

Standing up, he stood in front of her; being a head taller, he touched her head, gently stroking it, saying: "Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. As I told you years ago, you’re cute with it. But unfortunately, this world is prejudiced for various reasons. I don’t want anything to happen to you one day, which is why you need a way to hide."

"Hmm." She hummed softly; she looked more adorable than a kitten.

Smiling, Luan said: "Remember? Years ago I said I was going to explore this world, as well as fight in dungeons, and I promised you that when that happened, I would take you with me. That’s why every day I keep training to become stronger. When that happens, we will inevitably encounter other people."

She looked up, meeting his eyes.

"You understand the risks you run if you’re discovered as a demi-human, right?"

"I know." She nodded. She had never forgotten what had happened to her, especially to her mother.

She still had nightmares because of that day.

Catharina knew better than anyone how cruel people could be.

But even knowing the risks, she still wanted to stay by Luan’s side; she wanted to go with him, even if one day it might end up exposing her and inevitably make her a target for people with different motives who would want to harm her.

...

In the blink of an eye, another three years passed.

Luan 20 years old, Catharina 17 years old.

In these last years, Luan had changed quite a bit. From a teenager, he had become a man.

With the physique of a swimmer and 1.88 m tall, although he didn’t have the best face, he started to attract the attention of girls from the village.

It was common nowadays for mothers and fathers to try to play matchmaker and pair their daughters with him.

The simple fact that the daughters weren’t against it said a lot.

But getting married and having children wasn’t in Luan’s plans.

Inevitably, that would interfere with his goals.

And he didn’t want to leave one day, abandoning a wife and children behind, in pursuit of increasing his level.

He wasn’t the only one who had changed.

Or rather, compared to Catharina’s transformation, his was minimal.

Looking back, when she was still a scared little girl... She had transformed into a true beauty.

Her long white hair had become somewhat platinum, reaching down to her waist; her eyes, although carrying a touch of a predator’s ferocity, had a unique charm that made it hard to look away. In particular, the pair of white-silver fox ears on top of her head twitching made her ridiculously cute. Not to mention that, unlike before, she now possessed two tails.

Wearing something more traditional and reserved, similar to a kimono, she even looked like a princess from a fairy tale.

If he didn’t know better, he would believe she had awakened some siren or succubus talent.

But in truth, it might not be that far off.

She had actually awakened one of the rarest and most frightening talents...

Vampire Spirit.

Yes, she had managed to obtain the shapeshifting that granted her the ancestral abilities of a vampire.

Her transformation wasn’t limited to a simple increase in strength and speed. No, it was more than that.

She became faster, stronger, with greater vitality, endurance and, mainly, when sucking blood, it was like in games where you take an HP and MP potion at the same time. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

It had only been half a month since she awakened this talent, but she had already learned to partially control it; however, if she wanted to flourish, she could no longer remain confined in this house.

"Catharina, pack your things, it’s time." Luan said to her.

Catharina, upon hearing this, remained silent for a few seconds.

She seemed to have sensed this day coming.

When it finally arrived, she still felt a little fear, but upon looking into Luan’s confident eyes, all that fear dissipated as if it had never existed: "Right now."
