Chapter 16: Chapter 16: Tyrannosaurus Rex

Catharina’s hearing suddenly sharpened.

In the distance, but not that far, she heard the rustling sound in the grass, as if something or someone was running. Or more precisely, more than one animal or person.

"What is it, Catharina?" Seeing her state of alert, Luan stopped.

"Something is coming at great speed and..." She murmured softly: "It’s coming in our direction."

"I see."

Luan went into a state of total alert.

Catharina did the same.

In moments, Luan was also able to hear the sound of something running at great speed.

’Horses? No... But it’s something heavy.’ He thought.

"Let’s hide!" Luan felt something was wrong.

It wasn’t one, nor two, nor three, it was several.

"Hmm!" Catharina nodded, and with him, they moved away, hiding their presence as much as possible.

*ROARRRR!*

A loud roar echoed.

It was a monstrous sound. It didn’t seem to be coming from a common beast, but rather, something powerful.

The hairs on Luan’s body stood on end.

Not only his. Catharina’s hairs also stood on end. Her eyes trembled.

It was clear that that roar belonged to a powerful beast. Perhaps even above Lv2...

Soon, the first wild animal appeared, followed by another and another...

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6... When it reached 10, Luan stopped counting.

There were at least twenty Lv1 buffaloes, there were even some that seemed to be Lv2.

’My God, what the hell scared a herd of buffaloes of this size so much?’

He began to sweat, luckily, he and Catharina moved away beforehand, otherwise, they would have been trampled to death!

"Ik!"

Catharina covered her mouth with her eyes wide open in shock.

Following her gaze, Luan held his breath.

He hated understanding what could be so terrifying that made the herd of buffaloes flee desperately.

*RUUUUUUUUUUUUU!*

Tyrannosaurus rex.

A creature that went extinct on Earth, but here it still existed, but it shouldn’t inhabit this forest... They were normally found on the more Southern side.

This fierce creature had a buffalo in its mouth, biting, and swallowing like a snake, without stopping its pursuit of the buffaloes.

This creature was about 8 meters tall and should weigh more than 10 tons.

Despite its size and weight, its speed should be around 100 kilometers per hour.

Catharina’s hairs bristled. Even her tails stood up, as well as her ears.

Faced with a predator of this size, she became tense, in extreme defense.

It was a natural instinct.

*ROARRR!*

After swallowing the part of the buffalo that was in its gigantic mouth, the tyrannosaurus rex roared thunderously, making some of the fleeing buffaloes stumble in fear, and that was when the gigantic head of the tyrannosaurus rex bit directly into the poor buffalo’s head, ripping the head off with a single bite, continuing to advance, without worrying about the body, swallowing the head completely.

It was a scene similar to a pelican swallowing a whole fish – Only much more brutal.

"Let’s fall back a little more..." Luan whispered in Catharina’s ear: "If we continue here, there is still a chance of being noticed..."

Without looking away, she nodded her head.

With great caution, the two retreated.

That tyrannosaurus rex continued massacring the buffaloes with an insatiable hunger.

Wherever it passed, bodies of buffaloes and other unsuspecting animals were left along the way.

Part of it seemed to be out of hunger, another part seemed more to demonstrate its strength, but it also seemed that it did this for pure fun, as if it wanted to proclaim to the world how powerful it was.

"Is it... Marking territory?" Catharina murmured softly.

Luan blinked.

Furrowing his brows, he could not deny that possibility.

He did not possess much knowledge about the behavior of a tyrannosaurus rex.

If this creature came all the way here, and was alone... It might indeed want to mark territory and make this forest – at least part of it, its territory.

Whatever it was, they needed to get out of there as quickly as possible.

Facing such a beast, they did not have the slightest chance.

That creature was at least Lv3.

...

Due to the absurd amount of noise the buffaloes, and even the tyrannosaurus rex were making, Luan and Catharina managed to gain distance successfully even after stepping on some branches along the way.

Placing a hand on his chest, still with lingering fear, Luan sighed: "Wow, that was close."

Catharina bit her lower lip, and nodded with her eyes turning red: "That creature... I..."

Moving in her direction, Luan hugged her, murmuring softly: "It’s alright now, it’s already over."

Holding his hoodie with both hands until it wrinkled, Catharina’s body trembled in his arms.

She tried to be brave back there, but now that all of that had passed, fearing not only for herself, but mainly for Luan, remembering the brutality of that beast... she could no longer hold back her tears.

"There, there..." Luan gently stroked her hair.

Minutes later, Catharina finally calmed down.

"Thank you, I’m better now..."

"Really? That’s good."

Catharina was a pure 17-year-old girl. When she pulled back from his arms, ’red clouds’ colored her cheeks, even the tips of her ears turned red.

Seeing her acting so shy like any other girl caught Luan by surprise.

Discreetly, he laughed a little thinking she was cute, but he did not let her see, not wanting to embarrass her more than she already was.

The loud sounds in the distance subsided a little.

"It seems that monster is finally satisfied." Luan murmured.

"What do we do now?" Catharina asked.

Luan pondered deeply. It was far too risky to follow the same path as before.

Even with the possibility that that tyrannosaurus rex had already left, he did not want to count on luck and bet on ’what if’.

"We need to go around." Luan was resolute: "That area has probably already turned into that creature’s territory. The best thing to do is take a different path, even if it takes one or two more days."

Catharina replied immediately: "I agree."

In the first place, their safety came first, and in the second place, they were not in that much of a hurry.

With a detour more than necessary that needed to be made, they started right away while it was still daytime.

Before leaving the village, Luan had thoroughly researched the geography of the forest. Because of that, he could act with confidence even while making a detour.

"We have to cross a river if we go this way." Luan explained his plan: "But, there is a village near the river and we can pay a little money to help us cross by boat."

"I will listen to you."

"Besides..." Luan paused, reflecting about the tyrannosaurus rex: "Through this village, I want to send a message to Great Tree Village. I need to warn about the danger that exists in that area of the forest."

He may have left, but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t worry if the village where he lived a good part of his life, he would simply ignore the possible danger they could face, standing idly by.

Of course, he didn’t fear that the tyrannosaurus rex would destroy the village, but rather that someone would descend the mountain and end up entering the sights of this creature.

Catharina agreed: "It’s a good idea."

Unlike him, she didn’t have emotional attachment with the inhabitants of the village, but she could understand his feelings. And, deep down, she felt grateful to that village, since it was there that Luan was born.

"Let’s remain cautious, we don’t know if that beast will simply stay in the same place." Luan reminded: "It would be disastrous for us if that thing ended up coming in this direction."

The relief from before was replaced by fear. Catharina thought about this possibility as soon as she heard him say that.

"Makes sense..."

It was also when her expression changed completely, and her fur stood on end again.

...

Minutes turn into hours. Soon, they crossed a good part of the forest, even ignoring wild animals, continuing to move forward until nightfall.

"Let’s camp here." Luan stopped near a shallow water channel.

Although it says near, they were almost 1 kilometer away from the water.

Places like that commonly attracted thirsty animals.

"I will set up the traps." Catharina announced.

Without waiting for him to respond, she began digging some holes around the place they chose to stay.

Not only were holes made, but she also placed line around with bells hanging. If any wild animal tripped on the line, the sound would alert them – While the holes served to delay.

...

Minutes later, everything was ready.

There was a tree trunk nearby, and Luan cut two pieces, making benches for him and Catharina to sit around the campfire.

"It’s so quiet..." Catharina comments.

Luan closes his eyes for a moment, opening them he says: "This time, we will review by shift to keep watch."

With her hands extended, Catharina spoke with her clearest and coldest voice: "I can stay awake through the night. Let me keep watch." 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖

"Although it is true, I still prefer that we take turns." He said: "At least a little you need to sleep, understood?"

Catharina stayed silent, soon replied: "Alright."

Smiling a little, Luan said: "Right! While I make our food, go to the tent to clean yourself; I already put water and clean cloth for you to use."

Upon hearing this, Catharina’s eyelashes fluttered slightly. She looked at Luan, with her eyes shining discreetly.

"Thank you." She stood up.

Honestly, after running so much, and sweating a lot, even though it had dried, she was feeling uncomfortable, wanting to clean herself even if just a little.

...

After Catharina returned, having changed clothes, she went to warm herself by the campfire.

A silence settled between them.

Quiet people tend to be observant.

She noticed that, despite what they went through, Luan seemed very calm.

That, in a way, made her less nervous.

It was strange... Until a few minutes ago, her heart was beating very fast, but the fact that Luan didn’t seem nervous calmed her.

Looking away, contemplating the night sky at a 45 degree angle, a slight smile finally reappeared on the delicate, yet coldly beautiful, face of Catharina: "It’s so strange... Despite what happened before, now it seems so calm that, it feels surreal..."

Luan understood what she meant.

Also looking at the sky, he had to agree with her.

Even though they had not been noticed by the beast, or maybe it simply wasn’t worth it and it didn’t pay attention to them... Even so, it didn’t stop them from fearing that creature.

Now, however, everything was so calm and peaceful, creating a huge contrast.

The next morning.

This time, it wasn’t a particularly good night.

Upon waking up, Luan felt a bit of stiffness in his body.

It had already been a few hours since he woke up, but his body was still a little stiff.

Before, he was careful not to wake Catharina, but now he no longer took that care, knowing that they needed to eat, pack their things and leave again.

Stretching, he yawned.

Going to the tent, he said softly: "Catharina, wake up."

"Mm, I’m already coming..."

Her cold and sleepy voice was heard.

Luan went to prepare breakfast.

...

After finishing making the campfire, Luan saw Catharina come out of the tent with her long white hair messy.

He laughed discreetly, saying: "Go wash your face and brush your teeth. After we eat, we will leave."

"Yes~" She hummed softly with her eyes a little heavy with sleep.

While Catharina was getting ready, something woke him up on Earth, making his consciousness leave the Book of a Thousand Lives.
