Chapter 107: Chapter 107: What If He Runs Away from the Wedding

As the bodyguard finished speaking, Silas Sutton asked in a deep voice over the phone.

"Have you seen the person in Veridia?"

The bodyguard answered truthfully, "No, judging by his attire, he seems to be a hospital orderly or something in logistics."

Silas Sutton frowned and said, "Investigate his identity and let me know."

Bodyguard: "Understood."

After hanging up the phone, the bodyguard both kept watch and had his companion investigate Kenneth Grant’s identity.

An hour later, the investigation results were sent to Silas Sutton’s email.

The second Silas Sutton received the email, he picked up the phone on his desk and dialed Forrest Keller’s number.

When the call connected, Silas Sutton spoke in a stern tone, "Forrest, book a flight to Portmere."

Forrest Keller was already accustomed to such sudden arrangements from Silas Sutton, assuming it was business-related travel, and quickly complied, "Okay, President Sutton."

Meanwhile, Kenneth Grant explained to Stella Grant for a full hour.

From when he left Brynnfield with the company’s last sum of money, to being deceived and losing his savings, and then finally winding up in Portmere...

"I truly didn’t intentionally avoid contacting you and your mom, I just couldn’t face you both."

"I originally planned to make a comeback, return and pay off the debts, and let you and your mom live well. But who would have thought I’d run into a con artist, not only failing to earn money but losing everything instead."

As Kenneth Grant spoke of his experiences over the past few years, his already hunched back became even more bent, as if he’d aged several years in an instant.

Standing at the steps, Stella Grant looked down at him, "And then?"

Kenneth Grant was stunned by her words, "What do you mean, and then?"

Stella Grant said, "Why did you betray my mom?"

The word ’betray’ was heavy.

Kenneth Grant flinched, his lips trembling in his attempt to explain, "It wasn’t betrayal, Stella, I, I just couldn’t face returning to see you both, so..."

Stella interrupted him softly, "So you chose to start a new family with another woman here?"

Kenneth Grant felt a lump in his throat, "..."

’Excuse’ is like a shameful veil.

Concealing the myriad ugly facets of human nature in this world.

Seeing Kenneth Grant remain silent, Stella Grant pressed her lips into a straight line, "Dad, you’ve talked so much about how hard these years have been for you, but have you thought about how my mom and I have been living through these years?"

Kenneth Grant continued to evade responsibility, "You, you both have the house your grandfather left, right? And, besides, I gave your uncle some money, not much, but it should have been enough to scrape by for you and your mom."

Stella Grant frowned, "What money?"

In these years, she had never seen the money Kenneth Grant mentioned.

Hearing Stella Grant’s words, Kenneth Grant seemed to find a break in the accusation of being irresponsible, his eyes widened as he said, "I gave your uncle five hundred thousand before I left. Didn’t he give the money to you both?"

Stella Grant: "No."

Not only did he not, but during the most difficult time in her university years, she had borrowed twenty thousand from her uncle.

Her aunt came knocking for repayment within half a year, creating a ruckus that made the whole neighborhood aware.

With Stella Grant’s words, the air suddenly froze, Kenneth Grant’s mouth twitched as he opened his mouth again, "Stella, Dad..."

Before Kenneth Grant could finish speaking, his phone rang suddenly from his pocket.

His remaining words were swallowed back. He pulled out his phone, and upon seeing the call notification on the screen, his expression stiffened. He turned around to face away from Stella Grant and pressed to answer.

Whatever the caller said, Stella Grant couldn’t hear.

She only heard Kenneth Grant say, "Okay, I know, soy sauce, right?"

After a pause, he added, "Yes, I’ll buy some ribs when I return, there’s no need to cook, I’ll prepare lunch today."

Perhaps Kenneth Grant’s tone was too naturally warm.

It reminded Stella Grant of Lynn Adler suffering under the hospital’s torment.

Not waiting for him to finish, Stella Grant clenched her belongings and turned back to the hotel.

By the time Kenneth Grant finished the call, there was no one behind him.

Back at the hotel, Stella Grant lay on the bed, staring blankly at the ceiling without speaking for a long time, as if she’d been suddenly drained of vitality.

In her memory, Kenneth Grant had never cooked.

Despite Lynn Adler being pampered, she truly cherished him back then.

Not only wasn’t he asked to cook, but even his bath water after returning from work was prepared beforehand by Lynn Adler.

Stella Grant lay like that for over four hours.

By the end, she was in a state of half-awake and half-asleep.

As she was dazedly burying her face in the pillow to flee from reality, suddenly, the hotel room door was knocked on from outside. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞

She buried her face deeper, unwilling to get up, but the knocking grew louder and louder.

A few minutes later, Stella Grant shuffled to the door in her slippers.

The door opened, Silas Sutton stood outside, travel-worn, with a suit jacket draped over one arm, loosening his tie with one hand, and said, "Did you see the news about me getting engaged?"

Stella Grant’s mind was a mess, like a pot of boiling porridge, as she tilted her head and frowned, "What?"

Silas Sutton’s lips curled slightly, teasingly, "What do you think about me running away from the wedding?"
