Live Strong in the Wilderness-Chapter 212: Perfect Kill
"Shoot."
Xu Yi said, releasing his bowstring.
Since Lu Ke’s crossbow arrow had laser aiming, he didn’t need to worry about targeting the same wolf as her.
One person, one arrow, without any suspense, hit the target.
After all, the distance was less than ten meters; if they missed, there would be nothing more to say.
The two wolves struck by arrows immediately yelped, waking up another one.
Xu Yi put away his hunting bow, drew his machete, and jumped down.
"Don’t come down." Xu Yi said before jumping down.
Once on the ground, the wolf stood up, ready to pounce on Xu Yi.
But Xu Yi was quicker, slicing towards the wolf’s forehead and mouth.
Without any suspense, Xu Yi’s knife directly split the wolf’s mouth open from the middle.
Then, Xu Yi gripped the knife handle in his mouth, pulled out his dagger, and lifted the wolf by the scruff of its neck.
The dagger was immediately plunged into the wolf’s chest.
"Nice!" Lu Ke couldn’t help but applaud, as Xu Yi’s actions were so quick and smooth, like an assassin.
The two wolves on the ground also tried to stand up and attack Xu Yi.
"Hunted a wolf, gained 5 points."
With this notification sound, Lu Ke started to finish them off.
Her dagger struck one wolf directly, then was withdrawn and stabbed the other one.
Two consecutive notification sounds rang out, making Xu Yi happy as he took out the machete from his mouth and smiled at Lu Ke.
"Xu Yi, your moves are so beautiful, so fast. When will I be able to do it like you?" Lu Ke said, gesturing as if she had just been the one killing the wolf.
"Just train more, I think it’s not that hard. After all, we’re getting stronger in every aspect." Xu Yi said casually, then glanced around.
The rain was getting heavier.
"Put down the ladder, let’s cover the roof." Xu Yi said, then started to move the tree bark.
There were five pieces, each more than a meter wide and six meters long.
After Lu Ke put down the ladder, she helped Xu Yi place the five pieces of bark onto the roof.
After more than two hours, they finally completed the roof.
The firewood pile had already been moved beneath the bark roof.
"Xu Yi, no leaks after so long! Our bark roof is successful, right?" Lu Ke looked up at the roof six or seven meters high, holding a cup of hot water.
"Yeah, it shouldn’t leak now. With a roof, we’re not afraid of the rain." Xu Yi said happily, shaking the rain off his sleeves.
Luckily they had kept working, otherwise being wet for so long would have been unbearable.
"Yeah, now we only need the wooden planks." Lu Ke was increasingly satisfied with the stilt house; even without walls or fences, they could sleep soundly until dawn.
"Okay, today let’s first cut some logs, split them in half, and lay them down." Xu Yi shared his plan, considering they had hunted three wolves, the pack might return at night.
Even if they couldn’t finish laying everything today, they needed to make a corner to sleep.
"Wouldn’t the surface be hard to level?" Lu Ke thought that the flat side of split logs would surely be facing down, and the round side facing up.
If the round side faced down, they’d need to cut notches in both sides of the beams, reducing their support strength.
There’s a risk the beams could break.
"Yeah, we’ll arrange them tightly, bind them, then spread a layer of clay to flatten it. After all, I need to make a fire on it for warmth at night." Xu Yi thought of this when laying the roof this morning.
"Hey, that’s really good, we can definitely do it. Why didn’t I think of that?" Lu Ke said, patting her forehead.
"Alright, let’s have some breakfast and then go to chop the logs." Xu Yi smiled slightly and fetched some smoked meat.
After eating some, Xu Yi and Lu Ke hung the three wolves onto the three low pillars in the middle, then set off.
"Let’s go this way, it should save us about ten minutes." Xu Yi suggested a direction and then they started off.
On the way, of course, they needed to make some marks to find the way back.
It turned out to be about as Xu Yi expected; they arrived in 49 minutes. Originally, Xu Yi needed twenty minutes to reach the tree where he’d climb for a distant view, then walk another 50 minutes, but now they saved over twenty minutes.
Xu Yi didn’t chop trees in large patches but selected scattered ones.
Because he was wary of the sky.
If large patches were chopped, giant birds could swoop down directly.
This time Xu Yi didn’t chop and carry back, but cut down over thirty trees consecutively.
Lu Ke was in charge of keeping watch, since the tree-chopping noise might attract beasts to investigate.
Three hours went by. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
"Is this enough?" Lu Ke asked, looking at several piles of wood.
"One tree can be sawn into two pieces, split in half, it should be enough." Xu Yi said, then picked up two logs.
It was already past 11 o’clock; they could carry one load back for lunch and then continue with the transport.
If things went smoothly, they could manage two trips and lay down the sleeping area by evening.
Lu Ke could only carry one log, two would be too heavy.
After all, she had to be prepared for any beast attacks. Xu Yi hadn’t brought his hunting bow, so she could only rely on her short crossbow. Thus, she carried just one log.
Back at the camp, it was past 12 o’clock.
The rain continued, now moderate, soaking the ground everywhere, including their camp.
Not because the roof was leaking, but because nearby pooled water had seeped in.
"Thankfully the firewood isn’t soaked; otherwise, we’d freeze tonight." Lu Ke was relieved that Xu Yi had placed two thick logs underneath, and then the firewood on top.
They ate lunch, rested for about ten minutes, then set off again.
Time was limited; they had to rush.
After one trip, they had six long logs.
Back at camp, they rested for half an hour and boiled some water.
On the last trip, Xu Yi carried three logs.
By the time he arrived back at camp, his legs were shaking.
Lu Ke had advised Xu Yi to drop one on the way back, but he didn’t listen.
Xu Yi believed it was also a form of training.
After a few days, carrying three logs might not be as difficult.
Once back, Lu Ke immediately started to process the three wolves; they hadn’t been skinned or gutted yet.
With such heavy rain, the scent of blood wouldn’t spread, which was fortunate.
However, things always have unexpected turns...
