Chapter 18: Chapter 17: Don’t Care About Peking University, Just Care About You (Extra for the third alliance @Lust Emperor’s Uncle)

"Where’s the twist and turn? It just went through two people, at most a third-degree propagation," Yan Yan dismissed.

Qi Yi didn’t argue further. After high school graduation, it was he who deliberately cut off contacts with his classmates. He didn’t even join the class QQ group. For others, knowing a bit about each other was absolutely nothing out of the ordinary.

"How is Jin Jin doing now?" Qi Yi smoothly shifted the topic.

...............

Jin Jin, Yan Yan’s high school deskmate, had gone to Tongji University to study law after college entrance exams. Jin Jin’s first choice of major was Tongji’s famous architecture program, and law was her second choice.

Jin Jin had particularly strong debating and language skills, so Yan Yan had always felt that law suited Jin Jin better than architecture.

Even though the drawing skills required for architecture were also Jin Jin’s strength, not everyone could get accepted into their first choice in the college entrance examination; otherwise, why would they let students fill in several different preferences?

During the first year of high school, Yan Yan was a person who rarely spoke.

In the second year, after dating Qi Yi, Yan Yan talked a lot more and later joined the school debate team with Jin Jin.

Yan Yan’s words were few but startling when they did come.

Even if it wasn’t on the debating stage, during breaks between classes, Jin Jin (JiJi) and Yan Yan (YanYan) always found topics to ruminate over now and then.

The two girls, not content with just debating amongst themselves, would inevitably involve Qi Yi, the fourth debater on the school debate team, as their judge.

If Qi Yi sided with Yan Yan, Jin Jin would chide him for "passion fogging his reason"; if he took Jin Jin’s side, he would receive "fierce stares" from Yan Yan. In short, it was a thankless and arduous task he was coerced into taking.

Following on from that, the nickname "Jiji Waiwai" that Qi Yi casually coined for Jin Jin and Yan Yan began to spread throughout the class.

Yan Yan had been given many nicknames behind her back since she was young. As for this one which wasn’t very flattering but had good intentions, although she verbally told Qi Yi she didn’t like it, deep down she didn’t really mind at all.

This was also the origin of Yan Yan’s online nickname, "The Waiwai in JiJi Waiwai".

Teacher Ge, the class advisor, had switched Yan Yan’s seat next to Jin Jin’s to the front of Qi Yi and Wang Pu after sensing the "signs" between Qi Yi and Yan Yan.

Qi Yi gradually accepted the fact that he was indeed "blinded by passion".

The most "muddled" he got was when he "blew his top" for Yan Yan and quit the school debate team.

The cause of the incident was so trivial it could not be any smaller.

It was also during that second year of high school when the school held a debate competition by class.

As class president, Qi Yi was called away by the class advisor to help with something and didn’t have time to draw lots, so he asked Yan Yan and Jin Jin to go upstairs to get the lots from Chairman Chen Jian of the student council.

They all knew each other, being on the school debate team.

Yan Yan didn’t draw a good lot sequence—her first opponent just happened to be Chen Jian’s liberal arts class.

Chen Jian and Qi Yi were acknowledged as the strongest debaters in the second year. Chen Jian had always wanted to compete with Qi Yi for the fourth debater on the school team, because whoever secured that position would become the next debate team captain.

Chen Jian was the type of person who really liked "being an official," and traditionally, the debate team captain had always been taken by someone from their liberal arts class.

Chen Jian had excellent speaking skills, but only average logic—still, debating is not a competition that can be won by eloquence alone...

Although Yan Yan did not particularly wish to face the strongest opponent right at the beginning, since she was the one who drew the lot, she had no complaints about the order.

However, Yan Yan did have some issues with the topic she drew.

"Chairman Chen, I think there’s a problem with the topic I drew. Your affirmative side’s topic is ’Public opinion is to be feared,’ while our negative side’s topic is ’Public opinion is not necessarily to be feared.’ These are not the affirmative and the negative; they are inclusive. ’Not necessarily to be feared’ includes both being feared and not being feared. This proposition has a logical problem, making it very hard to debate," Yan Yan expressed her opinion on the debate topic.

"You are not the class president; the debate topics were already set a long time ago. Draw which is which. After you go back, just prepare well; debating logic isn’t as simple as you think," Chen Jian directly rejected Yan Yan’s view.

Chen Jian felt that the reason Yan Yan said there was a logical problem with the debate topic was that she felt the lot she drew was at a disadvantage.

Yan Yan, who had been targeted since childhood, didn’t know if it was because she had not been targeted for long since high school and began to feel somewhat unaccustomed, or because of her reliance on Qi Yi after they started dating, she became a little despondent upon returning to class.

Yan Yan probably suddenly remembered the feeling of always being targeted in the past.

Qi Yi came back from the form teacher and was extremely angry when he heard about Yan Yan drawing lots.

First, he was angry with himself because it was he who had Yan Yan help with the lot drawing, leading to this matter.

"Don’t be upset. Let Qi, the class president, lead our Jiji Waiwai group to debate so fiercely that they’ll be left staring in shock, speechless, dumbstruck, and running away in disarray," Jin Jin comforted Yan Yan.

Seeing Qi Yi more upset than herself, Yan Yan felt a bit embarrassed.

Originally, that could have been the end of it. Everyone would just prepare their debate materials well.

However, three days after the lottery draw, the class president from Chen Jian’s class came to find Qi Yi to discuss whether they could change the topic or make the negative side’s topic "Public opinion is not to be feared."

By this point, Chairman Chen of the Student Council didn’t even have the nerve to come over personally.

After preparing for two days, Chen Jian’s class realized that Yan Yan’s original reason for opposing the topic was completely different from what they had thought.

From a logical standpoint, the side that couldn’t be debated was actually the well-known "Public opinion is to be feared."

Because this debate topic was included in the one Yan Yan drew, as long as Yan Yan’s side could cite one contrary example, no matter how the affirmative side debated, they would be making a wedding dress for the negative side.

The negative could simply acknowledge every point and every example provided by the affirmative, and on that basis, by presenting one contrary example, they could conclude that it is "not necessarily" so.

If it weren’t for the incident where Yan Yan drew lots, Qi Yi might have agreed to the request of the class president from the literary class, as Qi Yi’s good reputation and his known amiability are well-acknowledged facts.

However, with the prior fact of Yan Yan "being bullied," Qi Yi, who was usually very amicable, was unyielding for once.

The obviously disadvantaged literary class could not accept this debate topic, and in the end, Chairman Chen, carrying some authority as Student Council President, somewhat forcefully had Yan Yan’s class accept the change in debate topics.

Chen Jian’s actions were, after all, not hard to understand.

After all, for the science class, a debate competition was just a student activity, but for the literary class, it meant something completely different.

Every year, Wenzhou High School has reserved spots for admission to Qinghua and Peking University, and although it may not be for the most popular majors, for those whose grades are not exceptionally outstanding, this opportunity is certainly a coveted one.

Those who usually get recommended for Peking University are often those who, in their second year of high school, win the best debater in the debate competition and are elected as the captain of the debate team.

Neither side would give in, and in the end, the matter escalated to Qi Yi declaring the class would withdraw from the competition and he individually left the school debate team.

At that time, for Qi Yi, "a rage unleashed for his beloved," he didn’t care about any best debater award.

To put it in Qi Yi’s own words, "I don’t care about Peking University; I only care about you."fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm
