Chapter 196: Chapter 196: "I Am Unmarried.

"You need to see me? We just saw each other. What for?"

Sherry Walsh fired off three questions on the spot.

After a brief silence on the other end, Noah Sterling said, "Right. You know my firm mainly handles non-litigation cases. There’s a rather complicated divorce case, and I don’t have a suitable lawyer to assign to it. I was thinking of referring it to you."

"Huh? You can’t handle it? Don’t tell me you think the case is too small for you to bother with?"

Of course, Sherry Walsh knew deep down that her law firm wasn’t in the same league as Noah Sterling’s.

But this was the first time she’d ever heard of a law firm turning a case away!

"No, that’s not it. My firm currently doesn’t have any experienced marital lawyers, but we’re planning to train one. So, during this case, I’ll be sending a lawyer over to learn from your team."

Noah Sterling made it up as he went, managing to make the reason sound plausible.

Even with his glib tongue, Sean Harrison’s unreasonable demand had put him in a very difficult position.

He and Sherry Walsh weren’t close, and their two firms were completely different in nature.

It was hard to come up with an excuse to go over there on the spot without it sounding forced.

"You need to send a lawyer to my firm for training?"

Sherry Walsh was baffled.

’Even if they didn’t have a marital lawyer, they could easily hire one. Why go to all this trouble?’

Noah Sterling played his trump card. "About Gary Sinclair’s case before, technically my team..."

"Alright, alright! I get it. I’m heading to my office now, you can come over."

Sherry Walsh didn’t want to bring that up.

"Okay. I’ll bring an assistant with me. You’ll need to clear a desk for her."

Noah Sterling made the request as if it were a matter of course.

"So... wait. This person you’re sending over, is it a man or a woman?"

"A woman."

Hearing his answer, all the illogical pieces of the puzzle suddenly clicked into place for Sherry Walsh.

"It’s not your mistress, is it?! You’re keeping a mistress but don’t dare to have her at your own firm because you’re afraid your wife will find out, so you plan to secretly stash her at my place and make me your accomplice!?"

Sherry Walsh said decisively, "I refuse!"

Another long silence followed on the phone.

On the other end, Noah Sterling took a deep breath, so speechless he wanted to kick Sean Harrison, who was standing right next to him.

’He’d been a lawyer for so many years and had never been put in such a compromising position!’

But Sean Harrison was his cash cow, so he could only continue to explain, "Lawyer Walsh, I’m unmarried."

Sherry Walsh shot back immediately, "Then it’s your girlfriend. You think her professional skills aren’t up to snuff and she’s not presentable, so you want her to train at my firm, go back, and wow everyone."

Noah Sterling let out another breath. "I’m single. Is that direct enough for you? This person is the daughter of a friend of mine. She’s very talented, but my firm really doesn’t take on many marital cases. She can grow much faster at your firm."

Only then did Sherry Walsh understand.

She had a few people with connections at her firm too. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺

Of course, back when she was an intern, she had gotten the position through connections herself.

That’s just how it was being a lawyer.

Having solid professional skills was only a minor requirement.

What was more important was for a lawyer to have a network and a source of cases.

That’s why many partners at law firms, while lawyers on the surface, were actually just schmoozing with clients over drinks to drum up business.

Sherry Walsh was about to agree, but then she glanced at Rory Linden beside her and asked, "Um... you’re coming alone, right? Sean Harrison isn’t coming, is he?"

She specifically emphasized, "You should know, I can’t stand him. He broke up with my best friend under shady circumstances back then. I may not be powerful enough to settle the score with him, but at least I can avoid seeing him, right?"

Noah Sterling had already guessed what she was getting at. "Don’t worry, he’s not coming."

With that, the two of them finally settled on a time and place to meet.

After hanging up, Sherry Walsh said to Rory Linden, "Rory, I’ll find an office for you and Leo to wait in for a bit. I’ll just chat with Noah Sterling for a few minutes and then send him on his way."

Rory Linden, afraid of interrupting Sherry Walsh’s work, said, "It’s fine. Is there a small park or something near your office? I can take Leo for a walk."

"There isn’t a small park, but there is a shopping mall. You two can go look around there."

"Okay."

Sherry Walsh drove, first stopping by her firm to pick up the intern she’d mentioned earlier, Chloe Chandler.

After dropping all three of them off at a large shopping complex, she drove back to her office alone.

It was a large shopping complex.

Rory Linden first found a coffee shop to chat with the intern, wanting to get a feel for her personality and her thoughts on helping to look after her child.

Chloe Chandler’s attitude was quite good. "I don’t have to punch in every morning, just pick him up in the evening and keep him company for a while? I’d be happy to."

Rory Linden still felt the need to remind her, "This job of looking after Leo isn’t difficult, and it might not help you professionally."

"It’s fine." Chloe Chandler waved her hand dismissively. "I was never interested in being a lawyer anyway. My dad was the one who forced me to come. I’m just here to coast, so it doesn’t matter what I do."

"..."

Rory Linden had a faint feeling that Chloe Chandler might not be a good fit to look after Leo.

But she didn’t jump to conclusions just yet.

"By the way, I’m going to buy some clothes for Leo. You can rest here, and we’ll come find you when we’re done shopping."

Rory Linden suggested.

"Sure. I’ll wait for you here then."

Chloe Chandler was happy to accept the suggestion.

’She wasn’t actually a big fan of kids.’

Rory Linden had returned from abroad this time with several suitcases, both large and small.

Most of them were filled with things she needed for her profession, like books.

Besides photo albums, Leo Linden had pathetically few belongings, especially clothes, so she really needed to buy him some new things.

The mall’s children’s clothing section was on the fifth floor.

Rory Linden took Leo Linden upstairs, and after visiting four different stores, they had bought quite a few clothes.

Just as the two of them were about to enter a fifth store...

"Miss Linden, there you are."

Chloe Chandler suddenly ran over.

Rory Linden asked her, "What are you doing here? Did something happen?"

"Nothing, Lawyer Walsh just told me to stay with you." Chloe Chandler put her phone in her pocket. "Go ahead and shop. I’ll follow along."

Although that’s what she said, her actions suggested she wasn’t too happy about it.

Rory Linden kindly suggested, "Well... why don’t you find a place to wait for me on this floor?"

"No, no, it’s fine. I’ll just follow you. If Lawyer Walsh finds out I’m not with you and tattles to my dad, I’ll be in for it."

Chloe Chandler was completely blunt, saying whatever was on her mind.

Rory Linden could also see that Chloe Chandler was a very straightforward person; she probably just genuinely didn’t want to do this task.

She also felt that having a legal intern pick up and drop off her child was a bit of a waste of talent.

The three of them entered another children’s clothing store together.

Rory Linden picked out an outfit for Leo Linden and had him take it to the dressing room to change.

The little boy had only been inside for a moment when...

"Rory Linden?"

A voice called out her name from behind.

Rory Linden turned toward the sound and immediately saw the very person she had been trying to avoid.

Sean Harrison seemed to have just run over; he stood there, his chest heaving as he caught his breath.

"President Harrison... y-you, what are you doing here?"

Rory Linden turned, about to go to the dressing room to stop Leo Linden from coming out, but...

Leo Linden’s voice rang out a second too soon. "Mommy, I’m changed."
