Love at First Sight? Mr. Harrison Has Been Scheming All Along-Chapter 270: "Leo Is Safe, What About You?
The next day, Rory Linden was busy all day.
She walked out of the operating room a little after nine and passed by the nurses’ station... 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎
"Dr. Linden, we haven’t seen Evan Hollis at all today. It’s so strange."
The nurse on duty commented casually.
Rory Linden was a bit surprised. "He hasn’t been here all day?"
Ever since Charlotte Rhodes was admitted, Evan Hollis had been at the hospital almost every day. Even when Charlotte was in the intensive care unit, he would stand outside her room for hours.
’He really didn’t come today?’
"Yeah," the nurse said. "The day-shift nurse just told me. I also kept an eye out for a while. Only the caregiver is in the room. Evan Hollis is actually not here."
Rory Linden didn’t think too much of it. "Maybe he’s sick or something. He’s been here taking care of a patient for so long, it’s normal for him to take a day off."
The nurse nodded. "That’s true."
Rory Linden was about to do her rounds anyway, so she went to Charlotte Rhodes’s room.
She wasn’t sure if it was just her imagination, but without Evan Hollis in the room, Charlotte Rhodes’s recovery seemed to be going worse than it had yesterday.
The old woman was lying in bed, staring blankly while clutching a phone.
She only sat up slightly when she saw Rory Linden come in.
Rory Linden went through the routine questions about Charlotte Rhodes’s condition for the day.
She didn’t ask about Evan Hollis, only reminding her, "Remember to change the battery," as she prepared to leave.
"Dr. Linden."
Charlotte Rhodes couldn’t help but speak up.
"Hm?" Rory Linden stopped. "Is there something else?"
Charlotte Rhodes glanced at the phone in her hand again. "After Evan Hollis left yesterday, did he say anything to you?"
"Him? He just asked when you might be discharged." Rory Linden then asked, "What’s wrong?"
Charlotte Rhodes’s face was filled with worry, and she didn’t speak right away.
Rory Linden waited for a moment.
"After you left yesterday, he suddenly said something came up and left. I tried to contact him today, but his phone won’t go through, and he’s not replying to my WeChat messages..."
After she finished speaking, Charlotte Rhodes dialed his number again and put the call on speakerphone.
A cold, automated voice soon came from the other end: "The number you have dialed is either switched off or not in service..."
"See? His phone is off." Charlotte Rhodes looked at Rory Linden. "Can you help me find him?"
"I’m sorry, I’m just a doctor. I don’t have the ability to do that."
Rory Linden refused instinctively.
She suspected Evan Hollis might have already been arrested by the police.
When the police arrest someone, they’re usually taken directly into custody and not given a chance to contact the outside world.
’Evan Hollis said goodbye to Charlotte Rhodes before he left. Could it be that he found out he’d been exposed and went into hiding ahead of time?’
Charlotte Rhodes tried calling again, but was met with the same automated message that the phone was off.
She let out a long sigh. "I’ve troubled you. You should get going, your shift is over."
As a doctor, Rory Linden was concerned about Charlotte Rhodes’s condition, so she offered some comfort: "Auntie Rhodes, please don’t worry. Evan Hollis will probably contact you soon."
"Yes, yes, maybe he’ll be back tomorrow."
Charlotte Rhodes said, going along with her.
After finishing her rounds in a few more rooms, Rory Linden went downstairs.
At this hour, she would normally have driven home.
But when she reached the underground parking garage, she saw Sean Harrison leaning against her car.
"What are you..."
"I got Leo settled in, then came by to see when you’d be getting off."
Sean Harrison paused, then added, "I just got here, and you came right down."
Based on past experiences, Rory Linden was completely skeptical of the man’s "just got here."
Rory Linden frowned and said, "You really shouldn’t come to pick me up. My hours are unpredictable, and knowing you’re waiting for me just makes me anxious."
"It’s just..." Sean Harrison looked at her and fell silent for a moment before saying, "Leo said it’s late and he was worried about you."
Rory Linden was about to say something, but when she heard him shift the blame onto their son, her irritation vanished completely.
Sean Harrison drove.
Rory Linden sat in the passenger seat.
Only after the car had left the hospital did Rory Linden ask, "By the way, has Evan Hollis been arrested?"
"No news on that front. Why?"
Sean Harrison glanced at the woman beside him out of the corner of his eye.
"He used to stay with Auntie Rhodes every day, but he was gone all day today, and she said his phone is off." Rory Linden looked at him. "In a situation like this, he must have been arrested, right?"
"Let me ask."
Sean Harrison pulled the car over to the side of the road and made a call.
His conversation with the person on the other end lasted less than a minute.
After hanging up, Sean Harrison started the car again and said, "No news for now. It seems they haven’t arrested him."
"Could Evan Hollis have found something out and skipped town early?"
The suspicion immediately formed in Rory Linden’s mind.
As she said it out loud, the theory sounded very plausible.
Sean Harrison didn’t answer her, simply focusing on his driving.
The car drove all the way into the villa’s underground garage and pulled into a parking space.
Rory Linden, worried about Leo, unbuckled her seatbelt and was about to get out of the car...
The man grabbed her hand. "Wait a second."
Rory Linden turned back.
With one hand on the steering wheel and the other gripping her wrist, the man’s brow was furrowed. "I’ve been thinking it over. Evan Hollis wouldn’t just disappear for no reason. He most likely ran because he heard something was coming."
"I didn’t tell him anything."
Rory Linden thought he was suspecting her.
"I know. It wouldn’t be a huge deal if he just found out and decided to run." Sean Harrison looked at her. "What I’m afraid of is that if he realizes he can’t escape, he might do something drastic."
Rory Linden wasn’t surprised. "Leo is with you, so I have nothing to worry about."
Sean Harrison’s grip on her fingers tightened slightly, his dark eyes fixed on her. "Leo is safe. But what about you?"
