Chapter 46: She’s Just A Little Girl.

The briefing co tinted for about an hour, mostly over how they would operate. According to Mr Neuman, the twelve of them would be divided into six pairs with each pair guarding his daughter on different days.

During this time the other pairs would be given two tasks, the first was to be ready to be summoned at any given time to the location where Melissa was if need arose. And the second was to hunt and neitralise his older daughter whether dead or alive.

After discussing the terms of the pay he dismissed everyone, except Leo of course. Leo of course could guess what the reason for this was and he did not bother, getting closer to someone powerful would benefit him— somehow.

He waited for the other awakened superhumans to go, they did throw him a few scowls as they left but he ignored them all. As he sat on his seat staring at the projected image of a human Hinata he sensed someone standing behind him.

He sighed and spoke without glancing back over his shoulder. "You stayed?"

Roxy clicked her tongue before speaking, "We are a pair now."

Due to some poor luck he ended up being paired up with her, well in his defense it wasn’t his fault that no one wanted to be with him. Honestly he would have preferred it to be a single man team but this was also good. He already knew her, barely.

Mr Neuman looked over at the both of them and cleared his throat nervously before saying. "Listen, I said I wanted to see him alone."

"Crap." Roxy gritted her teeth in frustration.

Leo looked over at the man with dark mysterious eyes and spoke, "We’re a pair, if you have anything to say to me it’s better this way."

Roxy’s eyes widened in surprise, her gaze falling on Leo for her gaze to soften.

Mr Neuman sighed in defeat, "Fine. I wanted to ask a few questions about my da— how was she?"

Leo could feel that the man was hurt and insecure about his feelings to want to speak to him alone. Currently in the room there were four people. Leo, Roxy, Mr Neuman and the guard who had brought them there.

But there were also two more people, he could faintly hear heartbeats somewhere in the underground casino.

Leo could not tell where exactly they were from, "We are not alone, are we?"

Mr Neuman almost gasped as he looked at Leo with something akin to fear but it slowly faded, "I have always envied you superhumans. Able to do things no normal human can, I used to think it was a gift. Till Hinata became that thing."

Leo looked at the man and responded coldly, "It’s a curse either way you put it, besides you made her what she is now."

A loud bang responded within the casino as Mr Neuman banged his fist on the table causing one of his glass cups quarter filled with wine to topple over and crash on the ground. Shards of fragmented glasses exploded in every direction.

The guard behind him tenses but did not move, Roxy pursed her lips and kept quiet. Leo simply stared at him.

For a long stretch of time there was silence so cold it could cause one to shiver but after a while Mr Neuman spoke, "Would you have killed your daughter if she begged you to? She’s the only thing I have left of her mother."

This time Roxy was the one who spoke up, "Her mother? You make it sound like she’s an only child."

Mr Neuman trembled as if battling against something deep and internal. "Hinata was my first child, after her mother died I married another wife to give her some love."

"And you put a baby in that one too." Roxy spoke in a tone that sounded irritated. "Did she hate Melissa?"

Mr Neuman shook his head, "No, they shared a bond I doubted anyone in the world could tear apart."

"What happened to Melissa’s mother?" Leo’s tone cut throught the air like a blade through paper.

Mr Neuman answered in a somber tone. "Her mother died birthing her."

Roxy scoffed. "Seems like you’re cursed."

Leo rose slowly to his feet, "I have something to do right now so I’ll tell you what you want to know."

The air in the casino grew stale.

"When I met her I didn’t know what she was but I could tell she was scared, it’s my first time dealing with a monster so I’ll have to prepare."

Leo started to walk with his hands tucked in his pockets, "She’s here right?"

Mr Neuman looked up at him with heavy eyes before nodding slowly, he snapped her fingers and after several seconds a tall woman dressed in a black uniform walked out of a hidden part of the casino with a young girl.

The girl had curly auburn hair, an elegant face and posture. She was a beauty to behold.

When she entered the looked straight at him causing Leo’s chest to ache. "Father, you called?"

’My God, she’s just a little girl.’ Leo thought to himself.

"Melissa these good people here are going to chase away the nightmares." Her father said as he pulled her closer to himself, his fingers practically sticking to her like glue.

Melissa’s yellow eyes brightened as she looked at them. "Like fairies?"

Before anyone could say a thing Leo spoke up, "Yes, like fairies."

He turned again and said, "You might think I can’t understand your pain, trust me I do."

He started to walk away.

Roxy followed after him.

"You’re quite child friendly." She said in a jittery voice.

He looked to his side, he had noticed that she had been rubbing her fingers excessively and hitting her lips a bit too much to just be nervous. "Are you alright?"

"Yes— no!" She bit her lips again, her eyes darted in every direction before she she stopped and looked forward, her face burning bright red. "It’s an addiction thing."

He did not want to pry but if he would be working with her, he felt he needed to be prepared. "To what?"

’Don’t let it be drinks please.’ He thought.

She sighed defeated. "Smoke, I’ve been trying to quit but it keeps coming back."

Leo kept quiet for a few seconds before saying, "Aren’t you too young to be addicted."

"Look who’s talking, captain schmuck." She said with a light giggle that deflated almost immediately, then her mood turned sour. "I’d rather not talk about it. So are you going anywhere right now?"

Leo looked at the time on his phone, it was almost night time. He had nothing else planned today, or so he thought.

On his phone there was a message he did not expect to receive so soon.

—NEW MESSAGE (UNREAD)—

Kevin: Mf, I can’t believe you actually replied after all this time. Sure let’s meet up, text me when you get this and I’ll send my butler over.

Leo forrowed his brows, "Curses."

Roxy glanced over at him, "Is that good like ’yes I’m free now’, or like ’no I’m fucked in the head.’"

Leo stopped as they got closer to the exit of the club. "You’re still here?"

"Ouch." Roxy imitated stopping a heart bleed before giggling. "Why don’t we exchange contacts, eh?"

Leo sent a message right back to Kevin and was surprised to have received a reply almost immediately. "Listen, I have somewhere to be right now."

He looked to his side to find Roxy already leaving. "Sure thing captain schmuck, call me."

"What?" He felt something slide into his pocket only to reach into it to find a piece of paper with her number. "How did she—?"

He eventually shook his head and sighed heavily, "I guess I’m going to see just who this ’Kevin’ is." He wondered why he sounded like he would not like him one bit.
