Liu Changqing looked at Zhang Yunjing, who was sitting harmoniously beside his daughter.

On the way here, he had already gotten a general idea of what had happened.

Just some petty little thing.

Simply put, Zhang Yunjing’s mom had found her daughter’s notebook, and it was filled with records of everything about her own son. If the genders were swapped, it’d definitely come across as creep behavior.

Then Zhang Yunjing’s mom, relying on what she saw in the notebook, thought her daughter was in an early romantic relationship. In a strict household like theirs, that kind of thing was absolutely not allowed.

So, she stormed out of the house and into the family’s small supermarket, found her daughter who was playing there, and after asking her about it, her daughter’s explanation just sounded like a bunch of excuses.

Not buying it one bit, she got mad and slapped her.

Zhang Yunjing, who had a strong sense of pride, tried to explain that she wasn’t dating anyone, but her mom had already made up her mind and refused to believe her side of the story.

Feeling completely wronged and seeing no way to reason with her mom, she lashed out and said she was running away from home—and that’s when her son told Liu Changqing what had happened.

With things clear in his mind, Liu Changqing started explaining the whole situation to Zhang Chengdong. Though he wasn’t totally convinced, considering the situation, the most sensible thing to do was take his daughter home.

So, he followed Liu Changqing back to his place.

Seeing that his daughter was safe and sound, Zhang Chengdong, as a father, felt relieved. Still, he tried hard to put on a stern face.

He was just about to start scolding her when Liu Changqing grabbed his arm.

Zhang Chengdong looked at Liu Changqing in confusion, and then heard him say—

“You said on the way here that you were going to talk to her calmly.”

“……”

Hearing that, Zhang Chengdong remembered he really had promised that. He took a deep breath and forced out a smile that was about as stiff as it could get.

He looked at his daughter and said,

“Come on, let’s go home with Dad.”

“I’m not going.”

Zhang Yunjing only glanced at him, then turned her gaze away with a blank face. Sitting on the sofa, she leaned forward, holding the remote in her left hand, her right elbow resting on her knee, with her palm supporting her cheek.

She looked like a rebellious kid who didn’t want to talk.

To Zhang Chengdong, her attitude made his face stiffen even more, and his expression quickly shifted.

Liu Changqing saw it all clearly.

He glanced toward the bedroom and saw the door slightly open. An Yuanyao peeked her head out, watching what was going on in the living room. When she noticed Liu Changqing looking her way, her eyes showed concern.

He gave her a reassuring nod, silently telling her it was okay, then turned back to Zhang Chengdong and said,

“Don’t get worked up. Let me talk to your daughter for a bit.”

“Mm... sorry to trouble you.”

Then Liu Changqing walked over to the sofa. He shot a look at his daughter, Liu Xiazhi, who stood up with a confused expression after a moment of hesitation.

Liu Changqing took the spot she had just vacated, looked at her still standing, then gave her a light pat on the back.

“Go to your room.”

“You could’ve just said it! Why’d you have to wink like that? So weird, Dad…”

Muttering as she spoke, Liu Xiazhi trotted around the coffee table and went back to her room. Once her door clicked shut, Liu Changqing turned back to Zhang Yunjing.

His gaze calm, he looked at the girl pouting in front of him and said,

“Do you know what happened when I got to your family’s supermarket just now?”

“Don’t wanna know.”

“Sometimes, parents make mistakes too. After all, they’re just human. It’s not like they can avoid messing up. Right now, you feel like they wronged you, like they think you’re lying. But once you’re older and look back on all this, you’ll realize—”

“They never believed a word I said!”

Maybe that hit a sore spot, because Zhang Yunjing suddenly got emotional and shouted. She dropped her hand from her cheek and looked down.

From the side, Liu Changqing could see the tears welling in the corners of her eyes.

Her fists clenched, and she bit her lip, clearly struggling with something. But the silence didn’t last long before she blurted out—

“Ever since my little brother was born, they stopped caring about me… They always told me to give in to him. All the good stuff was for him. I worked so hard and got a perfect score just like they asked, but whenever they promised me something, it turned into ‘next time’…”

As she kept talking, her voice started to waver. She sniffled and went on,

“This time too—they didn’t listen to my explanation at all. I told the truth, but they still said I was lying. To them, if what I say isn’t what they expect, then it must be a lie!”

“Yunjing…”

Hearing all that, Zhang Chengdong, as her father, realized for the first time just how much resentment had built up inside his daughter.

“I don’t wanna stay in that house even for one more second!”

That’s what Zhang Yunjing said.

Liu Changqing’s face changed at that. He looked at her seriously and said,

“You can’t just assume what you see is the whole truth! You say your parents don’t care about you since your little brother was born—but really think about it. Do they really not care?”

Zhang Yunjing froze for a second. She looked up at Liu Changqing, who still wore that serious expression. She didn’t argue.

He continued,

“If they really didn’t care, why did they take you to the amusement park last time? And after you ran away, why were they so panicked? Do you know your mom was so anxious when she couldn’t find you that she called your dad and said she was going to call the police?”

“……”

Zhang Yunjing stared blankly at him, then slowly turned her gaze toward her dad, who was standing at the door.

She hadn’t thought about any of that.

Liu Changqing softened his tone and continued,

“Home is a forever kind of place… Your little brother’s way younger than you. There’s a saying, ‘the eldest daughter is like a second mom.’ You should guide him, not fight for attention. And really, communication is key. If you’re upset, talk to your parents. If you keep everything bottled up, they’re not mind readers—how could they know what you’re feeling?”

He raised a hand and gently patted her shoulder.

“Go on… go home.”

Zhang Yunjing clearly had been moved by those words. Her head hung low. It was obvious his words had touched her.

After a long pause, she looked at her dad.

“Dad…”

“Let’s go home. I’ll do better too.”

Hearing that, Zhang Yunjing fell quiet. Eventually, she stood up from the sofa and slowly walked over to him, still looking down.

Zhang Chengdong smiled and patted her head.

They whispered a few things to each other, and then father and daughter exchanged a smile.

Watching the scene, Liu Changqing smiled too.

An Yuanyao, who had been secretly watching from the bedroom, looked at Liu Changqing on the sofa.

Her eyes sparkled.

What he just said… was so cool…

That’s my man!

Meanwhile, Liu Zhiyue, who had seen the whole thing, stared at his dad, his admiration reaching new heights.

Dad… really is reliable.

As for Liu Xiazhi, who’d been eavesdropping the whole time from her room, had a completely puzzled look on her face.

What’s Dad even talking about? I don’t get it at all…

Liu Changqing, on the other hand, sat there smiling like everything had gone exactly according to plan.

But in his mind, he was thinking…

Dmn, that was some smooth acting.

Zhang Chengdong, having resolved things with his daughter, gave Liu Changqing a grateful look. After exchanging a few words, the father and daughter pair left.

Once the door shut, An Yuanyao and Liu Xiazhi came out of their rooms.

An Yuanyao sat beside Liu Changqing and gently took his hand.

Nothing needed to be said.

Bang bang bang!

Not long after Zhang Yunjing and her dad left, a knock came at the door again. The whole family froze for a second. Liu Changqing looked at the kid furthest from him.

“Zhiyue, go open the door.”

“Okay.”

He walked over and opened it. When he saw Zhang Yunjing standing outside, he was confused.

“Why are you—”

Before he could finish, Zhang Yunjing took off her baseball cap. Her hair, once held back, now flowed freely like in a shampoo commercial.

It fell down, soft and smooth…

Without a word, she stepped forward, got on tiptoe, and planted a soft kiss on Liu Zhiyue’s cheek.

Then she said,

“You’d better explain this to your parents, you arrogant jerk…”

She held her cap in hand and called out to Liu Changqing,

“Bye, Uncle! I’ll come visit again sometime!”

And with that, she turned and ran downstairs.

The whole family froze.

Liu Changqing, An Yuanyao, and Liu Xiazhi all stared in shock, eyes wide and jaws dropped.

Of course, Liu Zhiyue was just as stunned.

He slowly turned to his parents and sister, stammering,

“Let me explain… She set me up!”

No one paid him any mind. Liu Changqing finally came to his senses and asked An Yuanyao beside him,

“Would you call that a forced kiss?”

“Probably not. It was just a kiss on the cheek… but kids these days sure are bold…”

“Big bro is such a sneak! Said he wasn’t interested before, but now he’s playing kissing games!”

While the whole family started discussing it, Liu Zhiyue clenched his fists.

I’M INNOCENT!!
