Madness After the Apocalypse-Chapter 22: The lamb skewers, nowhere to run
Chapter 22: The lamb skewers, nowhere to run
"Quick, quick, quick! Grab them!"
"Heh! Even though the building was empty, this trip hasn't been in vain!"
"Indeed, two live sheep! Hurry, grab the hooves!"
An Nan stopped the inflatable boat, no longer moving forward, but observing from a distance.
It seemed to be the same group of people who had just arrived at the building.
Ahead, the water was churning, and several people were excitedly surrounding two sheep swimming in the water.
An Nan had already stockpiled beef and mutton in her space and wasn't interested in taking theirs. However, she was curious: how had sheep ended up here?
As she watched the sheep swim, her eyes suddenly brightened. Beyond Guangcheng District lay the outskirts, where a mountain stood.
Unlike the semi-mountainous Luan Mountain, this was a completely undeveloped wilderness.
The two sheep must have wandered there after finding no place to settle in the city.
Sometimes, animals are smarter than we realize, relying on their instincts and survival skills.
An Nan turned the boat around and headed out of the city. Since these sheep had found their way here, surely other animals would be on the mountain too.
She quickly arrived at the mountain outside the city. Seeing no one around, she stored the boat in her space.
Her backpack suddenly began to stir, and Fu Gui struggled to get out.
An Nan opened the bag and let it out. Fu Gui's eyes were much clearer now, no longer appearing drunk, replaced instead by excitement.
It jumped out and happily ran a few circles around An Nan's feet before darting off.
An Nan looked at the little creature fondly.
Dogs by nature loved to play, and even her lazy Fu Gui enjoyed running around in the open. It had been stuck indoors with her for so long.
There was little choice; the apocalypse was harsh, and who, human or animal, could live as comfortably as before?
"Fu Gui, don't run too far!"
She warned, scanning the surroundings.
Though Guangcheng District had a low elevation, this mountain was quite high, most of it still visible above the waterline.
Fu Gui had disappeared, and fearing it might encounter a wild animal, An Nan quickly followed up the mountain.
Unlike the mountains in tourist areas, there were no man-made paths here, making the climb much more difficult.
An Nan retrieved a hiking stick from her space, carefully ascending while calling for the missing dog.
After some time, she reached a flat area.
Looking into the distance, she saw a white expanse and guessed Fu Gui must have gone that way.
An Nan cupped her hands and shouted for it.
"Fu Gui!"
"An Fu Gui, come back now!"
After a few calls, she was surprised to see a white mass rapidly approaching.
As it drew nearer, she was astonished to find it was a herd of goats—around two hundred of them.
Her surprise was met with joy, for she saw Fu Gui trailing behind them.
Wherever Fu Gui ran, a gap appeared in the herd, with all the goats being herded toward An Nan. Occasionally, a straggler would be nipped at by Fu Gui.
An Nan couldn't help but laugh: "Fu Gui isn't a bulldog, yet it's herding goats now?"
Fu Gui's little legs moved at lightning speed, panting as it reached An Nan's feet, its tongue hanging out.
An Nan bent down and scooped it up. "You hardly ever exercise, and yet you're running like a maniac?" she said, gently petting its head.
The little thing had done well, helping her herd goats before even growing up.
She retrieved a hot Orleans-style roasted chicken drumstick from her space, poured it some water, and placed it nearby.
Fu Gui quickly ran over and began to devour it.
Meanwhile, An Nan turned her attention back to the herd of "little lamb skewers" grazing nearby.
How wonderful it would be to keep them in her space—not only could they be eaten, but they could also breed.
Unfortunately, she couldn't store living creatures in her space, and though the manor could house them, she could only stay there for an hour a day.
Her dream of farming animals seemed unattainable. It seemed the only option was to slaughter and store them in her space.
With that thought in mind, she retrieved an electric baton—something she had found in a mall security room earlier. She hadn't expected it to come in handy here.
She quickly approached and stunned a few nearby sheep.
The others, sensing danger, scattered, and An Nan had to chase after them with the baton.
By then, Fu Gui, having finished the chicken leg, quickly joined in to help herd the sheep.
"Little lamb skewers, nowhere to run!"
The fleeing sheep were soon driven back to An Nan's side, and she swiftly stunned them.
Man and dog worked together seamlessly, and before long, all the sheep were on the ground.
Fu Gui, exhausted from the fast-paced work, panted heavily. An Nan quickly gave it some water and let it rest nearby.
She then retrieved a knife from her space and began to bleed each sheep.
By the time all the sheep had been slaughtered, night had fallen. An Nan looked at the pile of sheep, their meat still to be processed.
She decided to stay in the mountains tonight and process the hundreds of sheep slowly.
She stored all the sheep in her space, called for her dog, and left the area, which was now a mess from their efforts.
After walking a bit further up the mountain, An Nan found a flat spot. She pulled out camping gear and, following the instructions, set up a tent.
She gathered some dry wood and started a fire.

"Tonight, we feast on roasted whole lamb!"
She said, pulling out a tablet to play videos she had downloaded. Then, from her space, she took a sheep and, following the video tutorial, began skinning it.
The skin was placed in her space, and the meat was put on the fire to roast.
As it cooked, she brushed it with oil and sprinkled spices.
The aroma soon filled the air, and Fu Gui excitedly ran around the fire.
"Sis! When's dinner?"
An Nan smiled at Fu Gui's eager expression. "Little glutton, you'll have to wait a bit longer!"
The delicious scent spread through the air...
As the lamb slowly roasted, An Nan took the opportunity to prepare more sheep. She saved all the pelts to be used for fur coats or blankets during extreme cold.
The meat was either stored whole in her space or cut into lamb ribs, legs, and spinal bones.
She also separately stored the intestines, liver, and other offal to make lamb offal soup in the future.
The more An Nan worked, the happier she felt. With so many sheep, she could host a whole lamb feast whenever she wanted.
Add in the lamb she had stocked up before the apocalypse, and she would never run out of lamb to eat in this life.
"Woof woof~ Woof woof!"
Suddenly, Fu Gui barked at her from the side. An Nan turned to look and saw it stomping its feet, constantly glancing at the fire.
She laughed. "Alright, alright, I know, you're hungry! Dinner's almost ready."
The savory scent filled the air...
