Chapter 52 - Gavin vs Erick part 2.
Veronica, activate the overdrive skill. Gavin said. He was going to end this fight in one final, dramatic push. Erza growled loudly as she shifted angrily into her were-cat form. She couldn't believe that he was using that dangerous skill in a freaking tournament. Was he that stupid? The drawbacks would leave him weakened and spent for over a day until he recovers. She gritted her teeth as she watched on in absolute horror and indignation.
Gavin growled as the energy built internally. His mana circuits felt like they were being burned from the inside out as the power flowed through him. Overdrive skill activated. All stats are now tripled in points. Spells cast for the next ninety seconds will be doubled in potency and strength. Alert. User Gavin Johnson will become fatigued and weak until the recovery period is over after the skill is finished. Veronica informed him. Gavin, meanwhile, never felt so alive as when he used this overdrive skill.
He felt like he was the most unstoppable force of nature when he activated it. He let out a powerful howl that sent Shockwaves flying across the arena. The force of it sent the other nearby students flying back as it hit them. Several of the staff stepped forward as if they were going to intervene in the battle. They could feel this battle was shifting into something epic and dangerous in nature.
Gavin knew he didn't have much time before he would be as helpless as a newborn baby. So he ran forward, claws extended as he seemed to almost teleport in front of Erick. Erick cursed, his eyes widened as he couldn't follow Gavin's immense speed. Gavin grinned like a mad man as he delivered a mighty uppercut to Erick's chin, sending him flying back with a thunderous crash. He went out of the battle circle, crashing into an earthen wall that was erected by one of the staff members to cushion his impact. He hit the earthen wall with a loud grunt as he fell to the ground in a crumbled mess. He was bleeding from a wound on his chin where Gavin's claws sliced him open.
Erick gritted his teeth and refused to accept defeat so easily. He rose shakily to his feet and tried to get back in the fight. He wasn't done yet, he still had strength and energy left in his body. He took another step forward when one of the staff members appeared in front of Erick. "The battle is over, boy, you are about to collapse where you stand. The winner is Gavin Johnson!" the staff member called out. Gavin stood there in the arena, panting and trying to catch his breath. He was more exhausted than he expected to be. He was sore and bruised all over from the intense fight.
He looked around to the cacophony of applause from all the students and recruiters in the arena. The sound was overstimulating his sensitive hearing. He shifted back into his human body as he collapsed down onto one knee. Alert, Overdrive skill has ended. Blowback from the skill will now be felt. User Gavin Johnson will be unable to move until the recovery period is complete. Veronica called into his mind. He knew this was coming, but damn was he dreading the effects.
Gavin stumbled forward as he felt every ounce of energy drain out of his body at once. He crumpled to the ground nearly instantly as the effects of the Overdrive skill were felt. The pain was immense throughout his body as he lay there in a crumpled heap. He struggled to lift himself up and atleast sit up. He struggled to catch his breath as he lay there panting and cursed himself for using that skill. He managed to just barely turn his head and he saw the fear and utter anger in Erza's expression. The look felt like a dagger in his heart as he tried to offer her a warm smile. "I'm alright baby. Go win your fight," he called out.
Gavin knew he was in trouble with her. He could see by that look in her yellow glowing eyes that he was in for a world of hurt and one hell of a ear lashing from her later on. He could practically feel her anger as she glared over at his prone body. The medics came out with a stretcher as they lifted Erick onto one and tried to lift Gavin on the other. He tried to swat their hands away. He didn't want to go anywhere until he watched Erza's battle.
Erza's opponent, who had been too entranced in watching the epic battle between Erick and Gavin snapped out of it and finally charged at Erza while her back was turned. He was determined to knock that white were-cat out of the arena before she was focused on her own battle. He lunged in and threw a haymaker, intending to send her flying with his fist made of stone.
Suddenly, Erza's mana exploded like a powerful shield around her. She whirled around and threw out a massive left hook that connected with the boy's cheek. The impact bruised the bone in her hand as she put all of her physical strength into the hit. The boy went spinning out of the ring in a single powerful hit. She was beyond angry. She was done playing around with the students in the tournament. She stalked over to where Gavin struggled with the medics, her mana pulsating out of her in angry waves as she neared him.
Gavin felt a very ominous presence draw closer as he looked around and witnessed Erza's opponent go flying out of the ring with a single hit. He watched as she stalked towards him with fury etched on her face. He suddenly felt a chill run down his spine as she came up close to the medics. "You will get your butt on that stretcher now, if you know whats good for you," she growled in an angry hiss.
Gavin didn't even have the strength to argue as he nodded. The medics looked gratefully at Erza as she convinced him to listen to them and let them load him up on the stretcher since he had no energy to walk on his own two feet. "Um, nice fight baby?" Gavin tried to say weakly to break the ice and tension between them.
"Oh don't give me that mister, you're lucky I don't beat you down right now for what you just did," Erza said, her tone low and menacing. She was beyond furious over his decision to use the overdrive skill. He had promised he would only ever use it in a life or death battle. What did he think this was? It was just a dang tournament. Did he really have to go all out and risk himself like that for it? She was hurt, upset and massively hormonal because of her pregnancy. Maybe she was overreacting just a bit. But right now she doesn't care. She crossed her arms, her tail twitching back and forth, a clear sign of her annoyance and frustration as she followed the medics and Gavin to the infirmary. She hadn't shifted back yet. Just in case something insane were to happen near Gavin, she wanted the extra strength and power of her shifted form to protect him. The chances were almost non-existent, but she wouldn't take the chance.
The medics ensured that Gavin wouldn't be in any life-threatening danger and left him hooked up to an IV drip and gave the two of them some peace. The rest of the students from the first batch were still battling on. Only the two battles had ended so far in such a spectacular way.
Gavin watched the screen to keep an eye on the rest of the battles. He glanced to Erza and said, "Hey, um. You look a little upset." He thought maybe trying to inject some light humor might ease her mood a little. But apparently that was the wrong decision as she only glared at him more.
"Gee, I wonder why I'm so upset right now," Erza said as she sat next to him, her fur covered arms crossed over her chest. "You not only broke your promise to use that skill sparingly. But you used it in a freaking tournament match. Something non-life threatening!" she said, her voice rising in intensity as she spoke. She was nearly shouting at him as she said the last part.
Gavin winced slightly as she yelled at him, the sound nearly breaking his heart. She had never actually yelled at him before. She sometimes berated, chided, even snapped at him. But she almost never, ever yelled at him. "You never yell at me." he said, his voice laced with hurt and upset feelings.

Erza heard the pain and hurt in his voice, and she bit her lip in frustration. "Yeah well, you never broke a promise to me before. I get that you wanted to beat that lion down. I wanted the same thing. But to think you had to go so far to use such a dangerous ability baby. It wasn't worth you being a cripple temporarily." she softened her voice as she explained why she was so upset with him. Tears filled her eyes as she thought about how badly that skill could have gone if he hadn't been able to finish his fight so quickly.
Gavin looked down, ashamed and embarrassed. "You're right. I took things too far for the wrong reason," Gavin said as he looked at his hands in his lap. He knew she was upset, the fact she hadn't shifted back and kept a watch on everyone walking around was evident of her worry. It was impossible to tell at a glance who might be a member of The True Lords Army. That much was evident during the attack. His grandfather suspected they had inside information and wasn't sure which of his staff or students could have betrayed him. So Erza was worried that there might be some members here among the competition that might try taking advantage of Gavin's weakened state.
Jackson walked over through the crowd of students and checked on Gavin and Erza. "Hey buddy, you alive over there?" he asked Gavin as he overheard Erza's angry tirade. He had watched the match and was blown away by just how far Gavin pushed himself to knock that punk out of the ring. But he could tell that Gavin went too far and is now going to be out of commission for some time.
Gavin sighed and looked at his friend, "Yeah, if Erza doesn't kill me first then I will be just fine." Gavin said this with a defeated sigh. He knew he was going to be checking into the dog house for a while. Destination one couch, solo occupancy. He almost never saw Erza this mad or upset towards anyone and it made him feel like a total heel for upsetting her.
Erza gripped the back of Gavin's head and forced him to look at her. "I'm only angry because I love you, and hate when you are so incredibly stupid," she said in a lower angry whisper as she kissed him. It wasn't full of passion or tenderness but was a kiss of anger and fear. It was quick and she released him to take her seat next to his bed.
"Jerk," she whispered as she sat with her back to his bed. The kiss and insult brought a small, slight curve to the edge of his lips as he looked at the back of her red hair.
"Love you too, kitty cat," Gavin whispered. He chuckled, barely audible when he heard a soft grunt of dismissal from Erza.
Jackson just shook his head and laughed as he excused himself from the room. He had his own battle to participate in soon. In the meantime, Jackson wanted to go check on Helena and report that Gavin was okay.
