marked by midnight: the enemy's heiress-Chapter 53 : The sun and sand
By evening, everyone—including Livia and Ryan—arrived, carrying bags and suitcases. The car was ready outside, loaded and waiting.
Everyone climbed in, settling into their seats, laughter and chatter filling the space as doors shut one by one. The engine started, and soon the car pulled away, heading toward the airport.
The atmosphere inside was electric with excitement. Livia and Mira chatted animatedly about all the things they wanted to do once they arrived, their voices overlapping as plans and ideas spilled out freely. The kids joined in too, squealing over imagined adventures and counting down to sandcastles, water splashes, and sun-soaked games.
Ryan, meanwhile, explained the arrangements he had made for work, detailing schedules and plans with calm efficiency. Even so, he couldn’t quite suppress the small smiles that appeared at the cheerful chaos surrounding him. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺
The car hummed steadily along the road, carrying them closer to their journey—an entire family buzzing with anticipation, ready for sun, laughter, and memories waiting to be made.
At the airport, the group wove through the crowd, bags in tow. Cassian kept a steady hand on Mira’s back, guiding her past long lines and luggage carts, while the kids darted ahead and back like little comets of energy.
"Don’t run too far!" he called, scooping up Ivy before she could disappear into the crowd.
"I’m flying, Daddy!" she squealed, kicking her legs in delight.
Lucien tugged at his sleeve. "Daddy, can I check in by myself?"
Cassian laughed, bending to ruffle his hair. "Not today, buddy. But you can tell the counter clerk you’re a very responsible traveler."
Mira exchanged a grin with Livia as they approached the check-in desk. "Ready for the Maldives?" she asked.
"Absolutely," Livia replied, sliding her passport into the reader. She glanced at Ryan, catching his eye, and they shared a small, quiet smile—something unspoken passing between them amid the rush of the airport.
Ryan gave a slight nod, tucking the passports safely back into his bag. "All set," he murmured.
The line moved quickly, and soon they were through security. Cassian led the way, holding hands with Mira as the kids bounced along beside them, excitement written into every step.
"Seatbelts on?" he asked gently, leaning down to check the kids’ harnesses once they settled into the airport shuttle toward the plane.
"Check!" Lucien called.
Ivy bounced in her seat. "Check!"
Livia slid into her spot beside Mira, a sly grin curving her lips. "You know," she whispered, "I think this trip might be even better than we imagined."
Mira nudged her playfully. "You always say that—and you’re always right."
Cassian caught their exchange from across the aisle, shaking his head with a soft laugh before settling back into his seat. Ryan, seated quietly behind them, watched Mira and Livia with an easy smile, absentmindedly tucking a loose strand of hair behind his ear. The little gestures—the shared glances, the subtle smiles—were quiet, but they spoke volumes.
The plane’s engines roared to life, a gentle vibration running through the cabin. The kids clutched their favorite toys, eyes wide with anticipation. Mira leaned against Cassian, his arm resting securely around her shoulders, grounding her even as her heart fluttered with excitement.
"Almost there, princess," he murmured, brushing a kiss against her temple.
"I know," she whispered back, smiling softly. Her gaze drifted to the window as the city lights slowly shrank below them and the plane lifted into the night sky.
Hours passed in a comfortable rhythm—snacks shared, soft conversations, small giggles, and the occasional exclamations of awe as the kids peeked out at clouds bathed in pale sunlight. Livia shared stories in quiet tones, teasing Mira lightly, while Ryan, from his seat, offered supportive smiles and occasional chuckles.
By the time the plane began its descent, the excitement had shifted from anticipation to a sweet, almost tangible joy. Mira pressed her forehead to Cassian’s shoulder, watching as the first rays of dawn brushed the Maldives below.
"I can’t believe we’re here," she murmured, eyes sparkling.
Cassian’s hand found hers, fingers entwining. "We made it," he said softly, meeting her gaze in a quiet, perfect moment. "All of us. Together."
The kids pressed against the window, faces flattened against the glass as they marveled at the turquoise water below. Livia leaned close to Mira and whispered, "It’s even more beautiful than I imagined."
"And we’re just getting started," Mira replied, her voice soft but full of warmth.
The plane touched down smoothly, rolling along the runway as cheerful chatter erupted throughout the cabin. Bags were collected, passports checked, and soon they were stepping out into the warm, fragrant air of the Maldives, laughter and excitement spilling freely as the trip finally became real.
Cassian looked around at all of them—Mira, the kids, Livia, Ryan—and a small, satisfied smile curved his lips. "Welcome to paradise," he said quietly, meant only for the people he loved most.
And in that moment, with sunlight glinting on the water and a soft breeze ruffling their hair, everything felt exactly as it should—full, warm, chaotic, and beautifully theirs.
....
"Ryan, could you excuse me for a moment?" Cassian asked quietly.
Ryan nodded and stepped aside.
Cassian leaned in, lowering his voice. "Have you arranged what I asked? The proposal?"
"Yes, sir. Everything’s arranged," Ryan whispered back. "Just... ordered me when to take you there."
Cassian smirked faintly. "Not yet. But thanks."
Ryan nodded, offering a small smile as Cassian walked back toward Mira and the others.
Livia, already holding her camera, tugged at Ryan’s sleeve. "Hey, can I take some pictures?" she asked, grinning.
"Of course," Ryan replied, amused by her enthusiasm.
Mira laughed, brushing a strand of hair from her face as she lifted her phone. "Alright, let’s capture all the chaos before the kids destroy the beach completely."
Soon, the group split naturally. Ryan and Livia grabbed a volleyball, tossing it back and forth with playful competitiveness. Livia’s laughter rang out as she dove for a tricky shot, Ryan chasing after her, grinning as he returned it easily.
"You call that a serve?" Ryan shouted, laughing.
"Ha! Watch and learn, Mr. Serious!" she shot back, her ponytail whipping through the sunlit air.
Nearby, Cassian crouched beside the kids, guiding their small hands as they built sandcastles. Lucien and Ivy were completely absorbed, stacking towers, shaping walls, and carving moats.
"Look, Daddy!" Lucien exclaimed proudly. "My castle is taller than you!"
Cassian feigned shock, raising his hands. "Impressive! But every castle needs a king. I volunteer!"
Before he could react, the kids gleefully began covering him in sand. Ivy started at his ankles, Lucien piling sand onto his chest until only Cassian’s face remained visible.
"You’ve buried me alive!" Cassian exclaimed, his voice muffled but full of laughter.
"Shh! You’re the king!" Ivy declared, patting down the final mound.
"King of sand?" he asked, tilting his head solemnly. "I demand a throne!"
"You’re ridiculous, Daddy," Mira called, snapping pictures, her laughter bright.
"Only if my queen approves," Cassian replied, voice still muffled and playful.
"You’re hopeless," Mira said fondly. "But adorable."
Across the sand, Ryan dove for a return as Livia teased him with an impossible shot. "You’re going down!" she shouted.
"In your dreams!" Ryan shot back, grinning as the ball sailed past her with a teasing flick of his wrist.
Their laughter mingled with the kids’ squeals and Cassian’s mock protests, the sun casting long golden shadows across the beach. Waves crashed softly nearby, joyful shouts and teasing remarks blending into the perfect soundtrack for the beginning of their island adventure.
.....
By nightfall, everyone had retreated to their rooms. Ryan settled into his, Livia and the kids into theirs, and Cassian and Mira into the room Cassian had carefully arranged for them.
Exhausted, Mira collapsed onto the bed with a soft sigh.
Cassian slid in beside her, careful to close the distance without disturbing her comfort.
"Ah," he said, stretching lightly. "It was tiring... but fun. The kids were full of energy, and my back is definitely feeling it."
"Oh, of course," she teased, a playful glint in her eyes. "You are getting older, after all."
"Careful what you say, darling," he murmured, a low smirk tugging at his lips. "I may be older, but I still have plenty of energy... especially when I think about you."
Warmth rushed through her at his words. "Oh, really?" she murmured, smiling.
Cassian reached for her hand, intertwining their fingers. " Yes, but for now," he said softly, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her hand, "let’s just hold each other. That’s enough."
She leaned into him, relaxing fully against his warmth. His arm curled around her, pulling her close, and for a while the world shrank to just the two of them, soft, steady, and safe.
"Mmm," she murmured quietly. "This... feels perfect."
"Perfect," he agreed, resting his cheek against her hair, his breathing slow and even. They stayed like that, letting the exhaustion, the laughter, and the joy of the day settle around them, held securely in each other’s arms.
