Married To My Ex's Brother, Reborn Miraculously-Chapter 345: The chaos on the road
Without a delay, Augustine made a call to Gustave. "Hey, listen up," he said urgently. "I can’t get Anne or Sam. Check on them. Find them now. I want her home safely."
The tension in his tone alarmed Gustave. "I’ll check and let you know."
Ending the call, Augustine looked down at the phone again, his heart anything but calm. His thoughts spun wildly—’What if she is in danger? What if I lose her before I can even hold her again?’
Each breath felt heavy as if air itself was leaving him.
"Where are you, Anne?"
He began pacing across the room as he waited for an update from Gustave. He tried to think positively, but his mind conjured worse images he didn’t want to imagine – Anne in some unknown place, alone, frightened, hurt, and calling for him.
His hand trembled as he dialed her number again. But it was no use – the phone was still switched off. His chest tightened with fear and worry.
"Where have you gone?" he rasped, looking at the phone, willing it to buzz. He longed to hear her sweet voice. He was eager to know that she was fine. But the silence, every unanswered call, increased his impatience.
"No, I can’t wait any longer," he decided. "I need to find her myself."
Just as he took a step toward the door, his phone buzzed. The moment he saw Gustave’s name on the screen, he answered the phone instantly.
"Hello?"
"Something terrible has happened," Gustave said grimly. "The car was found stranded by the road. Sam has been shot dead on the spot. The car behind them also met with an accident. All the guards are injured and sent to the hospital. But there is no sign of Madam. She is missing."
Augustine felt as if the ground beneath him slipped. He staggered. He outstretched his hand toward the wall, bracing himself. What he had feared was happening finally.
"It’s targeted," Gustave added. "Certainly, a big force is behind it. I’ve my suspicion, but I need to check it first before confirming who is behind this attack."
"I am coming," Augustine muttered, his features tensing. Stuffing the phone into his pocket, he strode out.
Across the city, Denis sat numb in his seat as he watched Dimitri’s confession, tears shimmering in his eyes. He was shocked to know that Augustine, whom he hated so much, was actually his brother. But what shattered him completely was the truth that the one he had trusted, obeyed, and loved all his life was the very murderer of his biological parents.
He didn’t move, didn’t even blink, as a stunned silence wrapped around him. Shock, agony, disbelief, and the sting of guilt pressed down on his chest, stealing his breath.
He had betrayed his own family members. His biological parents had been right there in front of him, yet he had never cared about them and had always treated them as outsiders. And Augustine – he had treated him like an enemy and hated him to the core.
The truth burned him like acid from inside out, his mind racing back to the past. He recalled how he had treated Augustine back then.
He had bullied him, humiliated him, and deceived him. Not only this, but he had even conspired against Augustine with the man he had considered his father. When Augustine had been in a coma, he hadn’t gone to see him once. Worst of all, he hadn’t done anything to help him, even after suspecting that Gabriel might have planned that accident.
His hands trembled as he pressed them to his face. "What have I done?" A strangled sound of half sob, half curse escaped his throat.
But Augustine – he had always maintained composure. No matter how many years he was mocked, cornered, or humiliated, he had not retaliated. And when the truth finally surfaced, he gave Denis everything—even the chairman’s seat of the company. That selflessness, that grace, only made Denis’s guilt heavier. Compared to Augustine’s dignity, his own actions felt small, cruel, and shameful.
He felt hollow in his chest as if something inside him had crumbled, chasing all the air out of his lungs. Every cruel word he had said to Augustine, every scheme he had plotted against him glared back at him with a chilling cruelty, cutting his heart deeper. He had wronged his own family.
He started hating himself, feeling useless and gullible. He had ignored his own parents, treated his brother coldly, while worshipping the man who had destroyed them. The guilt twisted into something unbearable. He had lived his whole life under a lie, and now the truth threatened to suffocate him.
"I’m a useless son. I couldn’t do anything for my parents." For the first time in his life, he wanted to turn the clock, go back in time, and beg for their forgiveness. "Sorry, Mom and Dad..."
He broke into tears. The pride, the arrogance that he had once worn as his armor, was gone. He was now nothing but a broken man, burdened by guilt and sorrow. But underneath that anguish, a flame of determination burned brightly.
’I’ll make it up to you. I’ll bring you justice.’
His fists tightened on the table, the pain morphing into fury. "How heartless can you be, Grandpa?" he muttered, putting all the blames on the old man. "You separated me from my mother right after I was born. And to hide the truth, you didn’t even stop your son when he was turning me against my own brother. You never once told me not to fight Augustine. Why, Grandpa? Why?"
His chest tightened with heartache and anger. "You let Augustine suffer out there alone, away from his family, when he needed us the most. He was your grandson. Yet you chose silence, all to keep your secret buried. How could you be so partial?"
Denis shook his head, the anguish stabbing deeper into his chest. "You knew the truth about the accident. You knew who was responsible. But you did nothing to punish the real perpetrator. I have been with the man, followed him, and admired him who killed my biological parents."
His lips trembled as tears streamed down his face. He had just returned after burying his grandfather. The grief of losing his grandfather was still fresh in his heart. And the shocking truth added to his agony.
"The cruellest part is, you are gone already. I don’t even have a chance to question you, Grandpa."
His composure was breaking. "Why, Grandpa? Why did you maintain the silence for all those years? My biological father was also your son. How could you let the injustice happen to him?"
The idea that Dimitri had done nothing for Gervis, not even punishing his killer, left Denis trembling, his heart heavy with unbearable sorrow and a sense of betrayal.
"But I’ll not remain silent," he said with conviction, wiping his tears away. "I’ll make sure the guilty pay." His mouth contorted with fury. "Gabriel, your time is up. You used me as your shield, turned me against my own blood, but I see the truth now. I’ll make you pay for every crime you have committed."
His eyes burned with anger and determination. "Justice may be late, but it will not be denied."
In one swift motion, he ejected the pen drive, shut the laptop with a thud, and stood up. His goal was set. He would go to the police station and give all the evidence against Gabriel.
Grabbing his phone, he called Haris. The call was connected after a few rings. Before he could say a word, Haris spoke urgently.
"I was about to call you. This is bad – very bad."
"What is happening?"
"There was a big explosion at the construction site," Haris blurted. "The buildings collapsed—many workers are dead, dozens more injured. It’s complete chaos. The worst part is – the land mafia has captured the whole place. They declared it was their land and no development work is allowed."
"What nonsense?" Denis snapped. "We negotiated with, paid a huge sum of money for their assurance. They promised they wouldn’t cause any trouble for us. Why this now?"
"No idea," Haris grumbled, clearly disturbed. "They backed off their word. With this mess, we can’t continue the project. It’s gone."
Denis felt a wave of chills coursing through him. They had invested so much in this project. If it failed the company would collapse.
Augustine had just handed him the responsibility of the company, and soon after this, chaos surfaced.
"The board is in full panic," Haris said with growing tension. "They called an emergency meeting. I am sorry, but you have to come to the office."
Denis couldn’t allow the company to fall apart. It was he who had been in the charge of the project. He was the one who had gone abroad to secure the deal with the Sphere Group. It’s his responsibility to deal with this issue and resolve it anyhow.
He dropped the idea of going to the police station and taking action against Gabriel for the time being. ’Once I resolve this issue, I’ll deal with him.’
He ground out, "I’ll be there in a while."
Ending the call, he strode out of the house.
