Chapter 214: HIS HEIR

Rhynera struggled and sobbed as rough hands shoved her onto the narrow pallet. "Let me go!" she cried, claws of panic digging into the thin blanket. Her voice kept breaking as she begged and pleaded, but the guards only stood like carved men and pushed her harder until her back hit the cold stone.

Breathless, she spat words of defiance. "Let me go, you bastards! I will make sure my father hears of this. You will regret touching me don’t you dare..."

Their faces did not shift, they merely watched and stepped back when she barked orders, like men waiting for a signal.

"Crown Princess," he said formally, though there was softness under the ceremony. "Why have you been brought here?"

"You ask me that?" Rhynera spat, chest tight. "Ask these monsters. They dragged me from my home without cause and threw me in the dungeon and now back to this place... I also deserve answers."

A guard stepped forward, lowering his head. "Lord Drex," he said respectfully. "We discovered she is with child. We require your examination. Confirm whether she truly carries an heir and how far along she is."

Drex’s face changed from irritation to solemn duty. He glanced once at Rhynera, then at the guard, and nodded.

First, he called for a basin of warm water and clean linens, for the dignity of the princess and for careful examination.

After his work was done, Lord Drex leaned back and addressed the guards in a tone that carried the weight of law and lineage.

"It is true," he said at last. "The princess is with child. The heir has begun to grow inside her." He bowed then, a deep, ceremonious gesture before her.

"Congratulations... to the Crown prince and Crown princess..." he announced

The guards, now extremely careful, helped Rhynera to her feet with care that had not existed moments before.

They guided her back to Adam Chambers and into her inner chambers, one could tell how shocked and at the same time pained she was.

Adam arrived. He stood at the doorway, composed but with the hunger of a man who thinks power can be worn like a cloak. "I heard the news," he said, "You are with child."

Rhynera only let out a sly grin, "I already know, no need to repeat it." she answered.

Adam moved closer, eyes slow, "Even so, you can enjoy that for now," he murmured. "If this child is mine or not, you will be treated as you deserve." His words slid nearer as he lowered his tone and let his hand trace an attempt at softness along her cheek.

Rhynera pushed his hand away. "I am interested in none of that," she said, voice sharp. "I will not be toyed with anymore."

Adam’s smile did not change, only his mode. "Perhaps the pregnancy mood plays its tricks," he said lightly.

"Relax. For today I will allow it." He reached nearer, casual in possession.

"What would you like to eat? The kitchens can prepare anything worthy of your condition. You must not eat what little the dungeon affords. It will harm the child."

"Monster," she spat, the memory of Mia’s death and the cheap cruelty of his manner rising to a boil. Her fingers hit his lip as if to mark the truth. "You are nothing but a monster."

Adam grinned with the boredom of a man who thinks he has all the time in the world. "Rest now. I will return." He left as if the conversation were closed.

Rhynera sat, chest heaving with fury and fear, and breathed long, slow breaths to steady herself.

The silence did not hold long, as a shadow leaped through her small window and dropped into the room.

Rhynera’s head snapped up and there a man stood before her, cloak thrown back.

He stepped close, hand trailing down the line of her arm in a touch that said possession even when his voice tried tenderness.

"Why are you here?" she demanded, bristling. "You could not even save me in the dungeon."

He laughed softly and removed his hood. He moved with the confidence of one who believes himself indispensable. "Do not be ungrateful," he said, voice low. "I have given you what you want more than safety. I made you a child. You should be pleased. Now they treat you with care."

Rhynera stared at him, fury building in her... she watched as he sat before her and leaned so close.

Angrily she almost grabbed him by the neck, but he quickly caught her hand.

"You didn’t tell me you wanted it rough today," he teased, now trailing kisses on her wrist.

"You still haven’t killed Serena," she said through gritted teeth. "You want this realm? Then kill her. When she is gone, Adam will have only this so-called heir in me, and we will take over."

He smiled and kissed her neck. "Relax. No need to rush. You support anything against them too quickly. Let me handle things. I came to this realm to rule it. If Adam doesn’t give me the chance, I will take it."

He pressed closer, touching her as he spoke. "The king is down. Your sister is in the dungeon. I can make a deal with Adam and his mother and get whatever I want." She smiled softly.

"Thank goodness they still don’t know, the king’s attack came from..." The figure placed his finger on her lips.

"Shh, the wall has ears." "Get it done fast." Rhynera breathed out in frustration, but he only snickered and pulled her into a kiss.

"Let’s forget about those for now," he murmured as his eyes met with those of Serena who was standing by the door with a sly grin plastered on his face.

"How about I kill you first, Rhynera," Serena whispered to herself, rage burning in her eyes at the same time seeing what made her so pleased. "But that child will be the first to die."

She walked away and then when she got to the direction of the kitchen she snapped her fingers. One of the cooks walked toward her.

"Put it in any food or drink she eats," Serena ordered. "No one must know. If you do this, your parents will be released from the dungeon."

"Really?" the girl gasped, covering her mouth and Serena nodded, placing her hands on her lips. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

The girl bowed with a huge grin as she quickly ran off.

Serena smiled coldly watching her leave. "Only I have the right to carry Adam’s child and that child she carries she will never hold it."
