Married To The Last Ice Dragon-Chapter 178: Katherine’s control 2
As they walked through the crowds, silence reigned between them, and Katherine couldn’t stop her heart from racing as River took a soft grip on her hand.
They were soon standing in front of a bakery that had a painting of a cupcake pasted on the glass door. Katherine squinted her eyes and stared at it as something flashed through her mind. She and River were laughing while sitting in this particular bakery and sharing a cream-covered cake.
"We have been here before..." Her voice shook at the end, and she looked back at River, who nodded.
"And you said you would come back here with me." He smiled as he whispered.
"Only this time, I am not your lover." Katherine had no idea how or why she fell in love with River. It was strange that they were lovers before she lost her memories.
"Do you want to be?" River asked curtly and pushed the door open.
"I am not hungry." Katherine muttered with a small frown, wanting to turn away, but River grabbed her arm and dragged her into the bakery.
The bakery was completely empty, but the delicious aroma of cake and bread filled the air. She tried to jerk away, but he was too strong, and when he saw the rage in her eyes, a bright smile appeared on his lips.
"This is the Katherine I remember." He laughed and let go of her arm.
Katherine moved away from him, and he pulled out a chair in front of him. "Sit." He whispered, and she hesitantly obeyed while he sat in front of her.
"I want you to tell me everything that happened before I lost my memories. I only remember running away from Fireria, but I passed out shortly after, and when I awoke in the castle, Sage told me that I had lost my memories and that those statkus mages were controlling me... I was looking after the mages. I have strong abilities, which I seem to have been honing for quite some time. I really do not understand anything, and I have a strong desire to climb that mountain!" Katherine yelled as she finished her rambling, then slammed the table to catch her breath.
River gave her a worried look and a faint smile. "I am afraid I can not tell you. You will know once you regain your memories, but for the time being, I can only take you to the mountains." He informed her and nodded.
"I appreciate it." She mumbled and rubbed her brow, clearly frustrated. "Sage is my friend, and I do not want to be a threat to her. To me, she is like a sister."
"Have you been having strange dreams?" River inquired quietly.
Katherine gave a nod. "Yes, and I believe the statkus mages are calling to me. They clearly want Sage’s fire core for destruction, but I am not sure... Why does the ice dragon want it? He went so far as to marry her." Katherine was enraged. Her hatred for Cyrus was intense.
River grinned. Cyrus had always irritated Katherine. She wasn’t even hostile to him when she was brought to him, and she kept ranting about how she would kill Cyrus once she got a hold of him.
"I think you should concentrate on protecting your friend from the statkus mages rather than Cyrus." River told her with a small smile.
"Because he is strong?" Katherine asked, scowling. "He is not your typical ice dragon. What dragon is capable of concocting such potent potions?" She scoffed once more.
"That is because he isn’t, and I advise you not to irritate him." River told her unconcernedly but he hoped she would listen to him.
"Are you afraid of him?" Katherine inquired, her face solemn.
"No, but he has the ability to kill you." River spoke to her in a harsh and slow tone, his golden blaze blazing at her, and she pursed her lips, looking away from him.
"So?" When she asked, he laughed briefly before becoming solemn.
"If you irritate him and he kills you, I will murder his wife, and an endless war will ensue." River said it as if it were the most natural thing to say.
Katherine’s eyes widened as she turned to face River, who narrowed his eyes at her. He literally made her shiver.
"I... I am starving." He nodded as she stuttered.
"Hello dears." An elderly woman arrived on the scene with a large tray of creamed cake, which she placed on their table.
"Marie," River called, smiling.
"I am delighted to see you two again. You two are so adorable." Marie complimented, and Katherine forced a smile.
Marie, an old dragon was the bakery’s owner, and she made extremely delicious cakes. She seemed to be fond of Katherine and River.
She went away and returned with two glasses of milk. "Have fun." She smiled at them.
"We will." River returned her smile as she walked away.
"How on earth are you friends with an ice dragon?" Katherine abruptly inquired, wanting to know at all costs.
"Can we please stop talking about Cyrus?" River moaned.
"No." Katherine frowned deeply.
River couldn’t believe it. For him, it was like starting over with Katherine because she was acting the same way she did when he first met her. She kept asking questions about Cyrus and why they were even together when they were supposed to be arch nemeses. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞
"What bothers me now is that Sage can’t seem to live without him." She muttered to herself, and River laughed.
"Eat the cake. I brought you here because you ate the most of the last time we were here." He said to her, and she smiled back.
"It does look delicious." She whispered.
He sighed as he gazed lovingly at her. "You do."
Katherine’s eyes almost popped out of their sockets. "What did you say?" She wanted to be sure she heard him correctly.
"Eat up." He whispered, took the glass of milk, and sipped it while maintaining eye contact with her.
Katherine nodded slowly, flustered, and took her glass of milk.
...
River made certain that they remained in the bakery until late at night. The temperature had dropped even further, and it was snowing outside. Katherine kept staring at the door, indicating that her desire to go to the mountain was growing.
River stood up, took a small bag of gold coins from his pocket, and placed it on the table.
"Let’s get going." He informed Katherine, who had her gaze fixed on the door.
"Finally." She groaned, stood up, and dashed towards the door.
River pursued her, his gaze fixed on her. He followed her out the door as soon as she opened it. She froze at the spot, unusually quiet, which River noticed.
"River." Katherine called, her voice low and forced, as if she was fighting not to fight.
"Damnit!" River growled, sensing something was wrong, and immediately grabbed her arm.
They were both instantly swallowed by a dark green glow and vanished from view. River had his eyes closed and increased his grip on Katherine’s arm, feeling the intense cold, inhaling the sudden smell of death. When his eyes flew open, he was standing in front of a terribly dark path in the middle of two trees.
"River?!" He heard Ashton call behind him his voice filled with surprise.
River let go of Katherine as he turned to see Ashton and a swarm of mages in front of him.
