Marrying My Father's Enemy-Chapter 126: Spilled Wine And A Bet
Chapter 126: Spilled Wine And A Bet
Chapter 126
Eira stirred awake as the faint smell of porridge wafted through her small apartment.
She blinked, and turned around to see Sana, who was standing over her with a blanket draped over one arm.
"You fell asleep on the floor again," Sana said, shaking her head.
Eira rubbed her eyes, her fingers brushed her laptop.
"I wasn’t planning to sleep. I just closed my eyes after sending an email."
Sana rolled her eyes. "And ended up snoring."
"I don’t snore," Eira replied, grinning as she sat up.
"Sure, you don’t," Sana said sarcastically as she placed a steaming bowl of porridge and a cup of tea on the table.
"Now, eat. And for the love of everything, sleep in your bed next time."
Eira took the bowl gratefully, the warm steam fogging her glasses. "You’re too good to me."
"Someone has to be." Sana sat across from her, watching Eira dig into the porridge.
As Eira sipped her tea, Sana leaned back in her chair and said casually, "By the way, I’ll be attending Callian’s and Mita’s engagement party."
The tea almost slipped from Eira’s fingers. "What?"
"I was invited," Sana said with a shrug. "By Rylan."
Eira raised an eyebrow, a smile tugged at her lips.
"Oh, really? You and Rylan?"
Sana flushed slightly but waved her hand dismissively.
"We’re... seeing where it goes. I don’t know what to expect yet."
Eira placed her bowl down and leaned forward. "I’m happy for you, Sana. You deserve someone who makes you happy."
Sana smiled warmly, then lightly punched Eira’s cheek. "Don’t worry, Callian will be back. You’ll see."
Eira froze for a moment, and didn’t say anything.
Instead of responding, she took another sip of tea and looked away.
/// The Engagement Party \\
The grand hall was with soft lights and the sound of chatter.
It smelled like champagne and expensive perfume as Sana stepped inside with Rylan.
She adjusted her dress, her eyes looked at the crowd.
"I’ll be back in a bit," Rylan said, kissing her cheek before slipping into the crowd.
Sana wandered around the room, taking in the lavish decorations and the clinking glasses.
It didn’t take long for her ears to catch Mita’s voice.
Mita stood near a group of women, holding a champagne flute and laughing loudly.
"Oh, Callian adores me," she said, her words sounded arrogant.
"He’s finally with someone who matches his status."
Sana’s fingers tightened around her glass. Her blood boiled as Mita continued to brag.
"Excuse me," Sana muttered to no one in particular.
She grabbed a glass of red wine from a passing waiter and walked toward Mita.
Mita turned just as Sana "accidentally" stumbled forward, spilling the wine all over her pristine white dress.
"Oh no!" Sana gasped, covering her mouth. "I’m so clumsy. I’m so sorry!"
Mita stared at the stain in disbelief, her face turning red.
"You idiot!" she shrieked, pushing Sana back. "Do you have any idea what you’ve done? This dress is worth more than your entire existence!"
"I really didn’t mean to," Sana said, trying her best to look apologetic, though her eyes sparkled.
Mita stormed off, muttering curses as she rushed to find a change of clothes.
Sana turned away, smirking to herself, only to spot Callian standing near the edge of the room.
He wasn’t smiling, and wasn’t talking to anyone.
His expression was hollow, his posture tense.
Sana’s smirk faded as she grabbed another glass of wine and made her way toward him.
"You look thrilled," she said sarcastically, holding out the glass.
Callian glanced at her, his eyes heavy with something she couldn’t quite place. "What are you doing here, Sana?"
"I was invited," she replied, taking a sip from her own glass. "Unlike some people, I don’t crash parties."
Callian’s lips twitched, but he didn’t smile. "Go enjoy the party."
"I am," Sana said lightly. She looked him over. "You look like you’re having a blast too."
"I’m doing what I have to do," Callian said quietly, his voice almost drowned out by the noise around them.
Sana stepped closer, lowering her voice. "You don’t have to do this, Callian."
He shook his head, his jaw tightening. "It’s not about what I want."
"Maybe it should be," Sana said, her tone gentler now.
Callian looked away, his grip tightening on the glass in his hand. "You don’t understand."
"Maybe I do," Sana said. She placed a hand on his arm briefly, then pulled back.
"But you need to figure out what you’re doing before it’s too late."
Before he could respond, Mita returned, her face still fuming but now dressed in another outfit.
She looped her arm through Callian’s possessively, glaring at Sana.
"Come, Callian," Mita said. "We have people to meet."
Callian glanced at Sana one last time before allowing Mita to lead him away.
Sana stood there, watching them go, her chest tightening with frustration.
"You’ll figure it out, Callian," she murmured to herself. "I just hope it’s soon."
The room buzzed with laughter and clinking glasses.
She couldn’t ignore the hollow look in Callian’s eyes, nor the way he moved like a puppet, his strings pulled by a master he despised.
Rylan returned, his brow furrowed when he saw her expression. "What’s wrong?"
Sana shook her head, her voice clipped. "It’s Callian. He’s... trapped."
Rylan’s lips pressed into a thin line. "He’s a grown man, Sana. If he wanted to walk away, he would."
"Would he?" Sana replied back as her voice rose slightly.
"You saw him. He’s miserable, Rylan. And you’re his brother. Why aren’t you doing something?"
Rylan sighed heavily. "Do you think I haven’t tried? Do you think I don’t see it? But he won’t talk to me. He won’t talk to anyone."
Sana’s eyes burned with frustration. "Then maybe it’s time someone forced the truth out of him."
"Sana, Callian doesn’t care about Eira. He can’t. So please, let go of this idea now. It’s over."
"Do you wanna bet that he still does?"
"Sana!"
"Let’s make a bet. If I get Callian worried tonight about Eira, you must buy me a penthouse."
"And if you don’t?"
"If I fail. I’ll do whatever you say, mister Reed."
"Well, that sounds like a great deal."
"So shall we?"
"Yes."
