Marvel: Master Of Role-Playing-Chapter 200: Dick Grayson
Chapter 200: Dick Grayson
At the gates of LexCorp, Ben stood waiting. Before long, Reed walked out, holding a stack of research papers he had spent the entire week organizing as best he could.
The company hadn’t asked for the data. He could try taking it elsewhere and seek new partnerships. But with the cosmic storm samples now fully under their control, what good were these papers to anyone else?
Reed had worked for other tech companies before, but this time was different. Walking out of LexCorp, he felt a rare sense of defeat.
Because this was the first true failure in his scientific career, one big enough to possibly end it entirely.
"Ben. You’re here."
Spotting his friend, Reed forced a smile and called out, trying to pull himself together.
He continued, "Remember, man, you’re officially employed by LexCorp now. You don’t have to leave just because I am. Honestly, I doubt anyone would be willing to fund my research in the future anyway."
What could Reed do now? He was indeed a genius, but after this disaster, his path as a researcher was completely blocked. Maybe all that was left for him was to find work in a factory, doing repairs on large machines as a regular technician.
He wasn’t completely out of options yet. But chasing dreams—that seemed far out of reach.
"Reed, you know me. I couldn’t care less about my job at LexCorp. I only came here to support you. If you can’t find work, I’ll help. Sell those useless lab machines and let’s open a garage together. With your brain, who knows? We might build the most famous custom auto shop in the country."
Ben waved it off like it was nothing, showing he wasn’t bothered at all about leaving LexCorp behind. But now that Reed had no research project to focus on, he no longer ignored the people around him like he used to.
A car repair shop. It sounded like a great future. However, deep down, he knew it was just wishful thinking. Sure, they could probably open a shop together. But based on everything Reed had seen during his time at LexCorp, the pace of technological advancement in the near future would far surpass anything a small garage could keep up with.
Even auto repair would likely end up monopolized by LexCorp.
And Ben? There was no way he could truly be indifferent to a high-paying job like the one he had. He was getting married. His fiancée hoped he would keep a stable, well-paying job. That’s what Ben wanted too. He had only put it off to support Reed, choosing not to look for work after retiring, and instead staying by his side as an assistant and bodyguard.
Still, Reed couldn’t turn down his friend’s kindness. All he could do now was make up his mind to find a new job as soon as possible. He didn’t want to drag the man down any further.
As the two of them were about to leave, a sharply dressed man in a high-end suit stepped in and blocked their path.
"Can we help you?" Reed asked.
The LexCorp employee didn’t even glance at him. His eyes went straight to Ben.
"Mr. Grimm, is that correct?"
"Yeah, that’s me. What’s going on?"
Ben wasn’t annoyed by the sudden stop. He simply looked at the man with a curious gaze.
"Here’s the situation. Mr. Luthor just launched a new project and hopes you’ll be part of it. Someone reported seeing you near the building, so he sent me to find you."
"A new project? But I’m not a scientist."
Ben was a little confused. He was fine with doing space operations, but that fell under engineering. He wasn’t a tech expert. Why would LexCorp want him for a research project? Did they need someone to do heavy lifting?
"I heard this project is under the security division. Maybe it’s because of your time with the Navy SEALs," the employee replied. He didn’t know all the details either, just shared what little he could. ƒreewebɳovel.com
"Looks like LexCorp’s got something new lined up for you. You should go, Ben," Reed said before Ben could decide. He didn’t want his friend to keep putting his life on hold for him. If a better opportunity had come up, there was no reason to ignore it.
"But..."
"Ben, don’t worry about me. I’ll reach out once I land something."
With that, he turned and walked away from LexCorp, leaving behind a hesitant Ben and the still-waiting employee.
"...Alright. Let’s go. Take me to him."
In the end, Ben clenched his jaw and accepted the offer. He really couldn’t walk away from such a well-paying job at LexCorp. He had once felt lucky just to have it.
Now that Reed understood his position, there was no way he could turn it down.
* * *
Deep within the lowest levels of LexCorp’s underground labs.
Ben never expected that this new project would bring him here, or that it would involve the cosmic storm.
Even though he’d been in the hospital for a while, Reed had told him that the cosmic storm was being studied in the most secure underground lab.
Now that he was finally here, he realized that everyone involved in this project seemed... familiar.
"Susan? Johnny?"
When Susan saw Ben, she just smiled and waved casually, not showing any strong reaction.
Johnny’s attitude, however, was colder. His expression only softened slightly after he made sure Reed wasn’t there.
Ben noticed all of this but chose not to say anything. The tension between Johnny and Reed had always been there. With the latter not even caring much himself, there was no reason for him to step in. Besides, Johnny’s dislike of Reed wasn’t totally baseless.
Just then, Reid stepped out from inside the lab.
"All three of you, come with me," he said, then turned back.
"Alright."
Susan nodded first and followed him into the lab. Johnny and Ben walked in behind her.
As soon as they entered, the three of them immediately noticed the massive spherical device hanging from the ceiling.
That enormous cosmic storm energy was being stored inside it. But what caught their attention even more was that some of that energy was now being channeled through special tubes into four unique-looking devices.
"Everyone, say hello to your new teammate."
Reid gestured, and from the shadows stepped a well-built young man with black hair, dressed in a tight black combat suit.
He gave a small wave and greeted, "Nice to meet you all. I’m Dick Grayson. Looks like we’ll be working together from now on."
Dick Grayson. Anyone familiar with Batman would recognize the name.
In the comics, he was the first Robin, Batman’s original sidekick. Later, he left to become a hero in his own right—Nightwing.
But in this world, he was Bruce Wayne’s adopted son, now brought in by Reid to take part in this mission.
