Marvel: The Villain-Chapter 231 Serum
Virginia, Military Airfield.
General Ross was leading his battered troops, preparing to fly back to Washington. Just before boarding, he received an unexpected call from his daughter.
It had been two years—the first time Betty had called him voluntarily. When he answered, he heard Betty’s panicked voice. After hearing what she said, Ross froze on the spot.
The Joker organization was making a move on the Hulk!
Over half a month ago, Jason had fought the Hulk in Brazil. At the time, Ross had deduced that Jason wanted to recruit Banner, was refused, and a conflict erupted.
But since Banner had already refused him, why would Jason return? Just to beat him up and vent? No, there had to be a deeper reason.
Betty didn’t finish speaking before the call cut off—he guessed the Joker organization had found her.
With his daughter in danger, Ross didn’t hesitate. He immediately recalled all the soldiers who had boarded, commandeered three attack helicopters at the airfield, and flew to the forest outside Richmond.
Ever since learning Betty was with Banner, Ross had her phone monitored, so he knew her location.
...
Three helicopters, carrying twenty fully-armed soldiers, roared over the forest.
"What in God’s name happened here?"
Looking at the craters below, the soldiers were all shocked. This wasn’t a human fight; it looked more like a small-scale war.
"We’re too late. The fight’s over."
Ross frowned deeply at the sight. The helicopters landed near the craters, and soldiers fanned out, rifles ready.
Ross carefully stepped into the crater and immediately spotted green blood splashed everywhere. He crouched, dipped a finger in it, and held it up.
This is... Hulk’s blood.
Could the Hulk have been defeated by the Joker organization?
At this thought, Ross could no longer remain calm. He wanted to capture the Hulk to study his genes and mass-produce Hulks. The entire purpose of this was to destroy the Joker organization. But if even the original Hulk couldn’t beat them, were all his efforts pointless?
Ross sank to the ground, his heart heavy. The motivation that had driven him vanished.
"General!" His aide jumped into the crater and ran over. "We’ve found several different sets of footprints at the scene. We believe they were left by members of the Joker organization."
"Several sets?" Ross muttered, and a smile slowly returned to his face. "I see. I see. The Joker organization must have sent all their core members to take him down."
Hulk’s individual strength is still unmatched. But even he can be overwhelmed by numbers, especially when those numbers are super-powered.
Ross let out a long sigh of relief. Once I crack the serum’s secret, I can make an army of Hulks. The Joker organization had to throw everything they had just to take down one. The final victory will be mine.
His spirits restored, Ross was no longer depressed. The soldiers searched the area for several kilometers but found no other useful information. They boarded the helicopters and returned to the airfield.
...
Three hours later, their transport plane finally took off.
The atmosphere in the cabin was heavy. The soldiers all sat with their heads down, silent.
Before they came here, their team was at full strength, their morale high. But after the battle with the Hulk, the team was decimated. The aisle was filled with body bags, and nearly everyone was injured.
After such an unprecedented defeat, morale was at rock bottom. Some were even thinking of retiring.
Ross didn’t console them. He was talking with his aide. As soldiers, emotional self-regulation was a basic skill. If they couldn’t handle this, they weren’t qualified.
"General, based on the site analysis, we found no sign of the Hulk leaving. We believe the Joker organization took him. Which means their attack wasn’t just for revenge. They had another motive."
"What motive do you suspect?"
The aide ventured a guess: "The same as ours, sir. For the Hulk’s serum. To make more of him."
Ross nodded grimly. "My thoughts exactly. The Joker organization is already powerful. If they get their hands on the Hulk, we’re truly finished. We have only one mission now: find the Hulk. Immediately."
The aide sighed. "General, I have an idea."
"Go on."
"If they want to study the serum, they’ll need specialized research equipment. We could track those purchases to find them."
Ross’s eyes lit up. "Track the medical equipment. Good idea!"
Praised by his superior, the aide smiled and added confidently, "There are many suppliers, which would make a search difficult. But the Joker organization is loaded, and Jason has a typical nouveau riche mindset. They’ll buy the best, top-of-the-line equipment. That narrows the search considerably."
"Excellent. We’ll start by checking all high-end medical equipment orders being delivered to the New York area."
Time was short. Ross immediately took out his satellite phone and ordered his staff in Washington to begin the search.
...
A call from the General lit a fire under them. By the time the transport plane landed in Washington, the search had already yielded results.
There weren’t many orders for such high-end equipment to begin with, and limiting the delivery address to New York made the search even easier.
Ross sat in the Humvee heading back to the Pentagon, his aide holding copies of three medical equipment orders.
"General, the first two orders are for medical universities. Unlikely. We can set them aside for now. The third is for a pharmaceutical company in Manhattan. I find that one highly suspicious."
Ross asked: "A pharmaceutical company buying medical equipment, why is that suspicious?"
"Nothing wrong with a pharma company buying equipment. But have you ever seen one buy thirty identical sets at once? And most importantly, all thirty are serum-separating devices."
Ross lit a cigar and thought for a moment. "It seems the Joker organization is in a hurry, too. Notify field-ops. Send a few plainclothes agents to check out this company. My gut tells me it’s just a shell for procurement."
