Chapter 154 - Requesting a Nuke

As Lorna and Erik fought against the Tyrant, the surrounding Lickers seized the opportunity to rush forward.

But at that moment, a towering figure charged in, sending the creatures flying one after another.

It was Juggernaut.

Like a real tank, no Licker could withstand his impact. They were all thrown aside with brute force.

From a distance, Maria watched as the Tyrants and Lickers she had deployed were being overwhelmed. Her face darkened.

She had been reluctant to use these creatures initially, mostly because May found it inhumane. After all, the Lickers and Tyrants were clearly once human. Their very existence was pure evil.

Because of this, they had agreed that these creatures should only be used as a last resort.

But now, even this last resort was failing. She turned to May and spoke in a low voice, "If this doesn't work, we need to request a nuke."

May was momentarily stunned, then looked around.

"This is still a city..."

The implication was clear—there would be civilian casualties.

Maria knew this too, but she averted her gaze and continued, "Baghdad has long become a paradise for the undead. There are no civilians left here."

As she spoke, she avoided looking at May or anyone else.

Because by saying this, she was essentially admitting that all the people here were already dead.

May stared at Maria in disbelief.

"How did you become like this? Have you forgotten S.H.I.E.L.D.'s original purpose? Have you forgotten why you joined in the first place?"

May had joined S.H.I.E.L.D. before Maria and had watched her grow step by step into the director's position.

Though she had taken a long break last year after the death of a little girl, the Maria she had known was once smart, wise, but also kind.

Maria's eyes turned slightly red at those words.

"May, we can't keep going like this.

"Last year, during the Apocalypse crisis, we lost over a hundred agents. Then came the zombie outbreak, and now the Hydra crisis.

"S.H.I.E.L.D. is running out of resources and manpower. If we die here too, then S.H.I.E.L.D. will cease to exist."

May fell silent.

She understood the immense weight on Maria's shoulders, a burden heavier than anyone could imagine.

But she still couldn't accept sacrificing so many lives.

Maria continued, "The Security Council has already sent me a warning—if we can't resolve this crisis, then S.H.I.E.L.D. will be deemed unnecessary.

They're looking for an excuse to dissolve us."

"But if we disappear, do you know what will happen to the world? Chaos. Riots. Death. Crime. A never-ending stream of super-criminals wreaking havoc."

In her mind, the stability of the world was built on S.H.I.E.L.D.'s sacrifices.

She wasn't just carrying the fate of S.H.I.E.L.D. on her shoulders—she was carrying the safety of the entire world.

After a long pause, May finally nodded.

"I'll persuade the Security Council."

S.H.I.E.L.D. didn't have the authority to launch a nuclear strike. Only the Council members did.

And May understood what Maria was doing—she didn't want to bear the responsibility of using a nuke. Only May was in the right position to make that request.

She didn't blame Maria for making her the scapegoat.

Because right now, S.H.I.E.L.D. couldn't afford to lose Maria as its director. Otherwise, no one could guarantee that the next leader wouldn't be someone from Hydra.

"Thank you."

Maria bowed deeply.

......

On the battlefield, the fight between the Lickers and Juggernaut continued. But most of the Lickers had abandoned the fight and rushed toward Cassandra.

Lorna and Erik exerted their full strength to control the surrounding metal, shielding themselves and those nearby.

After a while, something unexpected happened.

The Tyrant, which they had assumed was dead, suddenly shoved aside the metal pinning it down.

*ROAR!*

A deafening roar made Cassandra turn her head in surprise.

"Such incredible vitality."

She had personally witnessed this creature's head being crushed. Yet now, it has completely regenerated. Even its limbs, stripped to bare bone, had regrown their flesh.

"Looks like this world just got a lot more interesting." She reached out again, ready to strip all its flesh away and see if it could still regenerate.

But freed from the metal's hold, the Tyrant grabbed a nearby Licker and stuffed it into its mouth.

There was a sickening crunch.

Like a person snacking on chips, the Tyrant chewed through its supposed ally with no hesitation.

And it didn't stop at just one.

One after another, the Lickers were devoured.

........

Meanwhile, in New York, inside the Umbrella Corporation building.

Adam leaned back in his chair, a look of exasperation on his face.

"I never expected the Tyrant to break free like this."

His control method was simple—implant a chip in the creature's brain, transmitting commands that made it perceive its handler as an even stronger predator, ensuring obedience.

As a result, the Tyrant saw enemies as food and attacked on sight.

But once Erik crushed its head, the chip was destroyed. And while the Tyrant's regeneration restored its body, the chip remained broken.

"Looks like I need to develop a more advanced control method."

He raised his head and gazed at the rising sun in the distance. At the bustling city streets below, where people were starting their day.

A faint smile appeared on his lips, "I will never allow anyone to destroy my playground."

......

Back in Baghdad, the moonlight was gradually obscured by dark clouds, shrouding the battlefield in darkness.

The Lickers, using the night as cover, moved even more unpredictably. But the battle was spiraling out of control.

With the Tyrant feeding on them, the number of Lickers rapidly dwindled. A force that had started with over a hundred was now reduced to just a handful.

Lickers had excellent regenerative abilities, but they couldn't resurrect after being digested.

Cassandra noticed this and smirked with mild amusement, motioning for Natasha and Daisy to stand back and enjoy the show.

But then, something caught her eye.

In the distance, a helicopter was evacuating S.H.I.E.L.D.'s operatives.

"Tch, just a few insects. Let them run."

As the battle continued, fewer and fewer Lickers remained. Then suddenly, Cassandra noticed something in the sky—a missile.

In the pitch-black night, its fiery exhaust trail was particularly striking.

At first glance, it seemed like it was simply passing by. But the next moment, Cassandra felt time around her come to a halt.
