Chapter 549: Chapter 549: People Just Want Peace of Mind

"I’ve been too narrow-minded! I really have!"

Feng Xue looked at the school model before him, and he immediately realized something he had always known yet always treated as nothing more than a backdrop—that in ancient times, Kaidan were once called gods.

Perhaps all along, because of specific terminologies like ’Identity’, ’Kaidan’, ’Tag’, ’Element’, ’Entry’ and so on, he subconsciously regarded "Kaidan" and "God" as different entities, even though he later encountered Cain, Seth God, and even the Miss Ke, he couldn’t twist his thought process around.

But now, when the rule that "performing certain actions at certain times and places could condense ’Identity’ and create illusions" emerged, a term involuntarily appeared in his mind—

"Ritual".

And with the advent of the word "ritual", the cognitive barriers in Feng Xue’s mind were finally shattered, allowing him to truly grasp that Kaidan were essentially "God".

The difference was merely a change in terminology.

Replace ’Identity’ with ’Faith’.

Replace ’Element’ with ’Divinity’.

Replace ’Tag’ with ’Divine Status’.

Replace ’Entry’ with ’Divine Fire’.

Faith gathering into Divinity, Divinity condensing into Divine Status, Divine Status igniting Divine Fire—a very standard system of God through faith thus emerged.

"So the answer had been revealed all along was this what’s called the barrier of knowledge?" Feng Xue stroked his chin, then shook his head. In reality, linking Kaidan with faith-based gods held little significance, or rather, it was even harmful. Putting aside that sense of familiarity, the terminologies of the ’Identity’ system were far more direct and easier to operate than the likes of Divine Status and Divinity. Asking you to condense Divine Status as opposed to marking yourself, the latter was undeniably easier to comprehend.

But as long as you connect gods with Kaidan and replace Omen with equivalence, the structure of the level becomes easy to understand.

If the Omen is seen as a "God", then everything within the school is the god’s "Believer", and the Believers conduct "Rituals" to invoke the descent of the God’s power and "Sanctify" items.

And the sanctified items, through the use of the Believers, gather more Power of Faith, which the Believers then sacrifice to enhance the God’s power, obtaining more Divine Power and sanctifying more items.

"A perfect cycle, no wonder every character must reuse in a loop, because that is essentially a part of this ritual. From the previous Ghost King’s ability to enslave the players’ souls, many of the students in this school are probably players who entered later and the ghosts they brought with them. Or rather, levels that make it onto the notice board are mostly filled by players.

"This game macro-manages each instance, whether it’s the players’ platform notice board or the two systems of ghosts and bugs, essentially are meant to cultivate more ’Identity’.

"Players who follow the Ghost System have powerful obsessions, and those of the Bug System possess immense desires, and regardless of the system, they all have extremely strong wills, all of this undoubtedly makes the best material for generating ’Identity’.

"And the stepwise structure of this world is also to refine cognition stage by stage, from ordinary people’s wariness and fear of ghosts, to players collecting and utilizing ghosts, and eventually, after becoming a ’changeling’ ghost, the reversed output, deepening cognition step by step, directing ’Identity’ towards the ghosts through the larger environment.

"The entire world is like an enormous ritual, which through successive selection and cultivation, creates sufficiently powerful players, and sacrifices them, eventually becoming living sacrifices for diverse Omen rituals."

Feng Xue walked circles around the model, and although the entire logic was very smooth, even giving a sense of "I have unraveled all the secrets of this world," he still felt that something was off.

After all, after putting in so much effort and creating so many ominous sites, was the ultimate conclusion really to cultivate an Omen like Infinite City?

Or to put it another way, the "Identity" that this current model possessed had already far surpassed those enormous Omens that existed in Infinite City, but it still showed no signs of transforming into a fantastical creature or a Kaidan, not to mention the resurrection of that predecessor, which was nowhere to be seen.

"The plan itself is flawless, and there are no logical gaps to be found, so where is the problem? Time? Perhaps, after all, I haven’t entered the perception of time for the Longevity Species, or maybe the predecessor from this world was someone like Miss Ke, who restarted the world several times just for fun when she was bored of living?"

Feng Xue muttered to himself but then thought such a view was too pessimistic because, like the pink Flame Dragon in the garage, it was neither falsifiable nor verifiable, and there was no way he could wait in this world for decades or centuries to see if it would indeed succeed.

In this instant, Feng Xue finally realized the significance of the almost light-speed cruise of the Heavenly Palace— even an experiment that took hundreds of years would essentially be completed after spending just a year or so there.

"The problem is that time waits for no one at Babylon Tower, who knows if Green Lantern might secretly snatch away the City Lord." Feng Xue did not feel like he could pin his hopes on Green Lantern’s competitive spirit, nor did he think she and those Kaidan above the hundredth level would wait for him.

Actually, if it were the Feng Xue from before Descent, he would have chosen to give up by now because even if Infinite City did get a City Lord, it wasn’t necessarily going to target him personally.

However, his brief life in the Void had left a deep Spiritual Imprint on him, one that stemmed from a profound experience of living as if there was no tomorrow, which made it impossible for him to place his hopes on someone else.

The inhabitants of the Void were the most unsettled of lives, only by continuously climbing towards higher grounds could they suppress that insecurity about their own existence.

"Living is all about peace of mind."

Feng Xue narrowed his eyes and reached into his storage waist bag to pull out a bunch of items wrapped to the size of lychees with packing cloth. Although the storage waist bag had a size restriction for its entrance, it had an advantage incomparable to other storage tools—

It had no capacity limit.

Hence, after Feng Xue had started his "trash liberation," he often used packing cloth to bundle various bits and bobs before stuffing them inside; among them were some comedic fantastical creatures.

One by one, the trivial items were thrown into the sandbox, and those slimy tendrils finally began to move sluggishly. In Feng Xue’s view, these tendrils would wrap around the fantastical creatures, whose structures would be destroyed by the injection of copious amounts of mosaic data, and then with just a little force, the tentacles could completely destroy even the seemingly indestructible fantastical creatures.

As the fantastical creatures were destroyed, a flood of data would spill out and pour into the mosaic data, which resembled a black cloud, becoming a part of it.

Seeing this, Feng Xue stopped his wasteful behavior of throwing fantastical creatures and instead took out another bundled package. With a flick of his wrist, a vast number of Black Balls fell into the sandbox.

Indeed, Black Balls, Feng Xue had not stopped crafting fantastical creatures since acquiring Golden Finger, but the vast majority were deteriorating into what he called "Omen Seeds."

This thing was essentially a collection of corrupt data, which could only exist in an "Identity"-rich environment like Infinite City; in the Real World, it would evaporate outright.

Even though the yield was high, such a thing was useless to him as a Kaidan; as for using it as a toxin...

Even a swine like Zhu Toutaou wouldn’t eat it!

But considering its mass-producing effect on Omens, Feng Xue had not directly thrown it away. Instead, he used packing cloth for storage, as it might come in handy against tough characters like Miss Ke.

And now, countless Black Balls were indiscriminately scattered by him onto the sandbox. fɾēewebnσveℓ.com
