Mated To An Enemy-Chapter 358 Shadows of the Past
A message from Saul had cut off their conversation early. Still, even as Axel walked away, Ashleigh felt better about where they stood. ๐ง๐๐ฆ๐w๐๐nov๐ฆ๐น.๐o๐ถ
โIt will take time and listening to each other,โ Lilyโs gentle voice whispered in her mind.
Ashleigh turned, unsurprised to find that the world had once again shifted into the slightly altered version of Lilyโs Rest.
โCan he hear you?โ Ashleigh asked.
โNot like you can,โ Lily said. โI can give him impressions, hints. But we canโt speak like you and I do.โ
โIs that why he felt drawn here today?โ
โHe felt drawn here because his heart is raw and he sought comfort from what he sees as the personification of the Goddessโs blessing through the bond,โ she sighed, looking around. โAnd because he dreams of marrying his mate here. But he doesnโt believe it will ever happen.โ
Ashleigh looked away.
โBut I did call you here because he was already here.โ
Ashleigh looked back at Lily.
โI told you to talk to your brother,โ Lily shrugged. โYou were taking too long.โ
Ashleigh sighed and turned away, she looked around and realized that the sphere was gone.
โWhere are they?โ she asked.
โWhere they belong, for now,โ Lily replied.
โWhere is that?โ
Lily considered before answering.
โBefore I was made into a wolf,โ she began, looking around as though she expected to be stopped. โI had a gift. It was very rare and unique amongโฆ my people. But both my brother and I shared the gift.โ
โWhat kind of gift?โ Ashleigh asked.
โWe could hear the voices of the dead.โ
Ashleighโs eyes went wide.
โAt least, we thought we could,โ Lily smiled. โI learned much later that what we heard was the memories they left behind.โ
โAmong all of my descendants, not one of them had this gift. At least not until, you.โ
ใ โWhat?โ Ashleigh asked. โBut I donโtโฆ I canโtโฆโ
โItโs true your gift is not the same as mine was, I heard them everywhere, but you only hear the ones that remain with me.โ
โWhat?โ
โThe voices you hearโฆ the lights you saw before. They are my descendants, but only a piece of each of them,โ she said. โThey lived their lives, and when they died, they took their place alongside the Goddess to be born anew.โ
Ashleigh sat down on the stones where she and Axel had first sat to talk.
โBut, left behind were their memories, the moments that meant the most in their lives. Those powerful emotions and beliefs. The victories, the celebrationsโฆ the defeats and the losses.โ
Lily paused, looking at the flowers that grew along the water.
โDo you know what happens to a memory over time?โ
Ashleigh shook her head.
โIt twists and bends, folds in on itself and suddenly becomes something entirely different,โ she said. โWhat about emotions? Do you know what the most powerful and lasting emotions are?โ
โLove?โ Ashleigh asked.
โIs it?โ Lily asked with a sad smile. โIt should be.โ
Ashleigh felt the grief in Lilyโs voice.
โWhat is it then?โ she asked.
โItโs the darker stuff,โ Lily replied softly. โAnger, depression, fear, anxietyโฆ. Happiness and love, excitementโฆ they are strong, but they need to be fed. They need to move forward and experience life in order to grow and flourish.
โBut when you canโt move forward, when your time has ended and you are just a memory of a life once lived. Itโs hard to hold on to the good things. The memory of a feeling is hardly the same as the real thing.
โSometimes, the memory of joy or happiness is worse than torture. It can leave a void of longing and depression, twisting the memory again and again until it has been reshaped into a nightmare.โ
Ashleigh suddenly felt her heart pounding in her chest.
โSo theyโฆ your descendants areโโ
โShadows of the past,โ Lily finished her thought. โLong-held grudges, regrets, all-consuming hatredโฆ all the dark thoughts and fears of the former Alphas of Winter.โ
Ashleigh swallowed. The dark thoughts and fears of the former Alphas of Winter. That was whom she had accepted.
โWhy didnโt you warn me?โ Ashleigh asked, her heart pounding in her ears.
โI didnโt know,โ Lily said. โNot at first.โ
Lily sat down in front of Ashleigh.
โWhen you called me to you, and you brought all the others as separate entitiesโฆ it was strange. I hadnโt been separated from them since before I died. I wasnโt focused on the reason it had happened or the consequences of it.
โBut when I saw that you could hear them, I tried to call them back into me. It worked, but only for a little while. They got stronger, and I got weaker. Their voices overpowered mine. You started listening to them.โ
She took a breath.
โAnd then they distracted me,โ she said sadly, โI tried to get you to focus on your own thoughts butโโ
โTried to get me to focus on my own thoughts?โ Ashleigh scoffed. โWhy not just tell me what was happening to me? Why all the cryptic bullshit!โ
โYou have known their voices in your mind for only a few months, I have been surrounded by them for a thousand years!โ Lily snarled as she rose to her feet.
Ashleigh recoiled at the sudden change in Lily, but she recovered quickly.
โI thought I was losing my mind!โ she shouted back. โI said horrible things to my brother, I tried to hurt people! You could have done something, but you didnโt!โ
Lily growled and moved closer to Ashleigh.
โDo you ever get tired of feeling like you are the only one suffering?!โ Lily shouted, her eyes glowing brightly with the bright white light of the moon.
Ashleigh was frozen in place, all around her, the air felt thick and heavy. Almost all of the warmth and color had been sucked away, and she found herself standing in a sepia-toned version of Lilyโs Rest.
Before her, Lily breathed hard. Her armor was disheveled and cracked in many places. Her face was covered in blood and bruises.
โWhatโs happening?โ Ashleigh asked hesitantly.
โYou are not the only person that suffers,โ Lily whispered. โI have tried to help you, I have tried to protect you.โ
โI donโt understand.โ
โThe voices you hear are only three or four, but there are hundreds!โ Lily answered. โWhile those three whisper in your ear and you listen, I stay here and defend her from all the rest!โ
Lily pointed her sword, and Ashleigh followed it with her eyes, gasping at what she saw.
On the ground, lying on the stone floor covered in patches of dried blood and dirt was a large white wolf.
The wolf opened its eyes, and it sniffed the air. Then, it lifted its head and looked at Ashleigh. Their hazel eyes met. Ashleigh felt something inside of her, a connection that stretched between them.
โMy Lunaโฆ.?โ Ashleigh whispered.
She took a step forward, but the wolf growled. Then, with some effort, it got to its feet and limped away.
โShe doesnโt recognize you,โ Lily whispered.
โButโฆ โ
โAre you any different?โ Lily asked.
Ashleigh looked back at Lily.
โWhat?โ
โDo you still recognize yourself?โ
Lilyโs voice faded as the world around Ashleigh returned and she found herself back where she started, alone.
