"Did you have a good talk with Prof. Stephens last night? How’s he doing? He called me in such a hurry that I wasn’t even able to ask him about his health," Wendy muttered on their way to the campus.
Myra nodded, "Ummhmm. I did. He said~ .... he was doing fine."
"Last night? Fabian? He called Wendy? What’s with this alien talk?" Yelena probed.
"Ohh~ .... you don’t know, as you were already fast asleep, sis Yel. Actually, ~ .... last night~ Prof. Stephens called me ...." Wendy summarised the whole thing to Yelena.
"Ahhh~ ...." Yelena hummed and followed it with a sigh, "Where did he say he was staying? she further asked.
"Ummm~ ... at the Larson mansion," Myra said, her voice low.
Wendy, whose attention was on her phone, didn’t hear it. She recalled something and asked, "Didn’t you say at the breakfast table that Mrs. Garcia invited you to have dinner with her and her husband, Mr. Garcia? Did you decide on what you are going to be wearing, sis?"
"My normal clothes are fine. It’s not like I am going to a banquet," Myra remarked.
"Ohhhooo~ .... sis. Don’t tell me you are going to wear a plain top and jeans. I like them on you, but~ .... it’s a formal dinner setting with the Garcias. Why don’t you try to dress up a bit?" Wendy suggested.
"No need to make a fuss over clothes, Wends. I will wear what I have. After all, it’s just a simple dinner," Myra wasn’t even thinking about the dinner. The entire night, she was either unable to get sleep or, when she did eventually get some, it was filled with scattered nightmares.
"I knew you would say that." Wendy smacked her hands. "That’s why~ .... I ordered something for you. It will most probably arrive by noon," she told Myra.
"Wends~ .... you," Myra was on her way to give a lengthy lecture about wasting money or saving for herself, but Wendy cut her off. "Sis~ sis~ ... I have already paid for it. And it’s nonrefundable. Think of it as an early birthday gift from me, umm." Saying this, she stuck her tongue out playfully.
Myra shook her head but gave her younger sister a side hug, and a wholesome smile appeared on her face. Wendy, in return, kissed her cheek, just like she did in her childhood.
"You two, go get a room. Don’t make me see your lovey doviness, ughhh~ ..." Yelena commented exasperatedly.
Wendy jumped on her, catching her off guard, and planted a kiss on her cheek with a loud smack sound, "Not jealous anymore, my Yel? Should~ we two~ .... get a room then?"
"Should we?" Yelena played along.
"Ohk~ ... you guys. Get busy in the room. I~ .... will be taking my leave. Can’t afford anymore penalties," Myra teased them and went on her way to the department building.
"Why are you going alone? Let us come with you," Yelena yelled.
"No need. Bu-bye .... Love birds. I don’t want to be in your way," Myra didn’t look back and kept walking. She has parted ways earlier than their usual route. And just as she had expected, as soon as she entered the campus grounds, the passerbys, when they saw her, started murmuring. The same nonsense, the same gossip from the forum page.
’Thank god, I didn’t let those two come with me. Otherwise, they would have started a wrestling match with everyone. It would be total chaos.’ Myra exhaled a breath. She straightened her posture and kept walking as if none of the surrounding talks concerned her. This has always been the case with her.
Wherever she went, people gossiped about her. Whether in elementary school, middle school, high school, or even at her university, people were very much interested in her unknown origin, her being an orphan, and how she managed to get through backdoors to secure the Red Stone scholarship and whatnot. This was nothing new to her.
But as she neared the entrance, the hushed tones amplified. She could feel others’ penetrating eyes on her. Still, she tried to mind her own business, but someone approached her, calling her from behind, "Hey~ .... Are you Myra Miracle?"
Myra turned her back to find an unfamiliar face, "Yes, I am. And you are~ ...sir?"
"You don’t need to know about me. There is someone who wants to have a talk with you. Follow me," the other person spoke in a manner as if he wouldn’t take a no for an answer. He turned around and started to walk, but when he had only taken two steps, he found Myra was still rooted to her spot.
Her brows creased stubbornly, "My apologies, but I will not be going with you." She declined the person firmly.
"YOU~ ...." He was about to say something, but then he noticed the attention around them. He softened his tone a bit, "Ms. Miracle, can you tell me the reason?"
"Because~ ...first, I have a class to attend, and second and most important, I don’t know you, sir. I don’t follow strangers," Myra looked at him defensively.
"Ohh~ Ms. Miracle, I forgot to introduce my business. My boss, he met you at the banquet a few days ago. You were with Prof. Oswald Mitchell. Did you recall now? Mr. Brian Tape?" he asked.
Myra heard someone gasp, "Did you hear what he said? Apparently, she went to a party with Prof. Mitchell. And now she is even indulging with a middle aged man. That means all those rumours about her are true. She is trying to seduce Prof. Stephens and Alaric Everests. Woah~ .... Goshh~ .... how disgraceful. And I thought people were being mean to her for no good reason. You can never tell a book by its cover."
Myra’s fists clenched on either side. She tried to keep her emotions in check, not wanting to make a scene here. Then, in a very polite tone, she turned towards the man and said, "I am sorry, but I seriously don’t recall anything, sir. Now~ .... If you will excuse me."
