Chapter 417: A Destined Mistake

(???? POV)

"She is a bane. An existence that shouldn’t have been born from the start, you know that. Just kill her~ .... Just finish her off, quietly."

"What are you saying? She is just a harmless girl. A child at that. How can you be so cruel and heartless towards her? Saying such ruthless things in front of the kid."

"A harmless human? A child? I saw it. I saw it all. She is a monster. She is a plague. The cursed one. It was a tragedy that she was brought into this world. She is a destined mistake. I advise you, for the sake of peace and quietness of all beings, this girl should be gone. She needs to be gone for good."

"ENOUGH. I have heard enough of your nonsense. I will do no such thing. She is an ordinary human and will live as one, without any problem. I will make sure of it; no one finds out about her existence. I will keep her safe."

"Hahh? Can you do that? You can hide her now. But can you do it forever? Someday, she will step into the real world, and when she encounters those beings, those vultures, ready to pounce on her. When they know she is alive. It will only be a matter of time before a war breaks out. What will you do then? It will be the end of us, end of us all. Humans, non-humans, everyone."

"I brought her here so that you could take care of her for a while, until I find a safe place for her. Not to listen to your lectures. I will reward you handsomely. Name any price, just keep her safe and hidden."

"Sir, I cannot do that. I am just a lowly shaman. For this child, I will not ruin my and my family’s life and their future even if you give me billions. I have said what I needed to say. Take my advice and just be done with her. That’s for the best, for her as well as for you."

"I have already done a lot of damage. If you don’t want to get involved, fine. But don’t breathe a single word about this to anybody. Or else, neither you nor your husband nor your children will be able to see the sunrise the next day. Got it."

’Whose talking? Whose voices are those? Who are they talking about?’ I heard a clear conversation between a man and a woman, but couldn’t see anything. The vision was all blackened, veiled by something.

’A human girl? A child?’ I was all confused. Their words puzzled me.

I was muddled up in my thoughts when, all of a sudden, I felt a warm sensation on my icy cold hands. The touch was careful, soft yet firm. It was secure, comforting in its own way.

I tried to peer my eyes open, although the act of it was arduous enough. But I somehow managed to do that, and the first thing that came into my view was a blurry yet pristine, clean, white and brown ceiling, illuminated with dim lights.

My eyelids flickered continuously as I felt dizzy in the head.

The constant sound of beeping filled the otherwise quiet surroundings. I tried to move my body, but every bone, every tendon, every vein, every blood vessel was screaming with an indescribable fatigue and pain.

After trying for a while and not getting any great results, I was feeling exhausted, so, eventually, I gave up. While lying in a supine position, I darted my eyes around to check where the hell I was.

Because of the monitors and medical machinery around me, the seemingly large place looked like a hospital room. A fancy one at that.

’A hospital room? But why am I here?’ I muddled my head to recall why I was in a fucking hospital room, but a piercing, splitting headache strained me greatly. I couldn’t help but grunt in a low voice. My eyes were tightly shut again.

Then, I heard a voice. A raspy, throaty, cool voice calling out, "You~ .... are~ .... you are awake? What happened? Why are you~ ...." The person sounded concerned. I could feel this person was holding my hand. I clasped it with whatever strength I had at that time. The headache and the ringing in my ear were killing me. It was getting too much to handle.

The person kept on rubbing my hands and caressing my cheeks. The warmth radiating from their palm was soothing, giving me solace. Strangely enough, it somehow even managed to calm me down.

"Breathe~ .... Inhale~ ... exhale~ .... Yeah, good. You are doing well. Take it in slowly and then release it," I heard them say.

After feeling a bit better because of the breathing exercise, I opened my eyes again, wanting to see who this person was, but as soon as I did that, the door unfastened, and a crowd of people, all wearing white coats, most probably doctors, entered the room.

I heard one of them say, "You need to step out for a while. We need to examine the patient’s condition." I wasn’t even able to see the person’s face before they exited the room.

Now I was left with all the medical staff.

"Miss. Can you see me clearly?" one of the grey haired doctor asked. I tried to open my mouth, but my throat felt sore and scrapy. It was irritable. In the end, I was only able to give her a brief nod. She then followed it up with a flurry of questions, "Can you hear me? Can you tell how many fingers these are? Can you tell me your name and what year this is?" And so on~ .... I contrived to give her the answer with either a single word or a brief nod.

She noted every single one of my answers, and after she was done, I scraped through a rather hoarse, breathy voice, "Doc~ doctor, what~ .... what am I doi~ng here? Who br~ought me?"

"Patient," the doctor looked at me with sympathy. "You were in an accident. Your friend had brought you to the hospital in the nick of time. If you had arrived even five minutes later, you might not have survived." 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞
