Mated To My Best Friend's Lycan Alpha Brothers-Chapter 434: Growing Suspicion
(Author’s POV)
Alaric, Brave and Elisa were settled inside Brave’s car, while the other three, Dion, Elio and Nora were riding back in Alaric’s.
The chattering of the nearby people and the occasional honking of cars filled the atmosphere, but the ride back to the mansion was utterly silent in both vehicles, especially inside Brave’s car.
Alaric, who was occupying the passenger’s seat, had countless questions he wanted to ask his brother. But he didn’t want to mind link him, it would only disturb Brave while he was driving. So, he refrained from doing so.
He then gazed at Elisa from the rear view mirror, contemplated something for a long while and then decided to finally speak, "Secretary Queens~ ...."
Both Brave and Elisa were left startled. Alaric wasn’t someone who would initiate conversation, especially with the opposite gender. So, neither of them was expecting him to call for Elisa.
"Huhh? Ye~s, Mr. Everests~ ...." she spoke hesitantly, as she adjusted the hem of her dress and straightened her posture.
Alaric wasted no time and questioned her point blank. His expression remained neutral, "I have been meaning to ask you something. Back at the hospital, Rave said you witnessed Ms. Miracle’s kidnapping in person and asked him for help, correct?"
"Uhh~ ... yes, that’s correct. I did witness it," Elisa spoke, her tone firm.
"Ummm~ ... where did you see it? Where was she abducted from?" he posed another question, his tongue poking his inner cheek.
Brave glanced at his brother but didn’t comment on anything.
Elisa moistened her lips. Tackling Brave was easy for her, since that guy can be considered emotional, but Alaric, he has always been cold towards her. He was a tough nut to crack, bullheaded. So, she needed to give him an answer with no loopholes at all.
"I was at the Crown Opulence hotel, Ms. Miracle was dining there as well. When she took the taxi, the driver seemed suspicious, so I followed the vehicle from a distance. He drove the car to the outer territory near the abandoned forest, and that’s when I saw two shady looking men get inside the car. I tried to follow them~ .... but unfortunately, my car~ .... it broke down at the last minute, so I failed in following them," Elisa wove a perfect answer, speaking confidently.
"Hmmm~ ... so you are saying that your car broke down near the abandoned forest. But how did you end up asking for Brave’s help? Can you enlighten me on that?" Alaric threw another tough question her way. His tone filled with genuine curiosity.
"I met Mr. Brave Everests on the road. He was bound for somewhere. There were no other vehicles nearby, so with no choice left, I had to ask him for his help," Elisa answered that as well.
"Why?" Alaric wasn’t satisfied. He poked her some more.
"Excuse me!" Elisa was a bit flustered. "I don’t get what you are trying to ask."
"I am asking, why didn’t you call for the cops? Generally, if these sorts of things happen, usually the first reaction is to call the police. At least, that’s what most humans would do, but you didn’t. What was the reason behind it?" Alaric was relentless with his questioning. He wasn’t giving her time to breathe freely.
Elisa fumbled, "I~ ... I~ ..." Trying to play the pity party card.
Glancing her way, Brave interrupted them, "Al, can we stop this for a while. We can talk about this at the mansion. You sound just like an investigator right now."
Without looking at Brave, Alaric added, "Is it so difficult to answer that?"
"Mr. Alaric, I have been keeping an eye on potential suspects for Chairman Larson’s plane crash accident. That was why I didn’t call the police. If I did that, it would tip off the real ones," Elisa’s eyes welled up as tears settled on the corner of her eyes, ready to spill any second. She lowered her head and made a low, sniffling sound.
In a stern voice, Brave mind linked Alaric, ’Al, I know you are suspicious of her. I, too, don’t trust her fully. But the truth is, Secretary Queens saved Myra’s life. We should be thankful for that. If she hadn’t seen her, only the moon goddess knows what would have happened. We would never have been able to see her again.’
Alaric pursed his lips in a thin line. What Brave said was true after all. Even he failed to reach Myra in time. So, who was he to interrogate like that? Turning his face to the other side, he looked out at the passing scenery.
Elisa breathed a sigh of relief. She had escaped Alaric cross questioning, at least for now.
Recalling something, Alaric rummaged through his pocket and took out something.
He raised his hand to show it to his brother and said, "Here~ .... Take it."
Brave gazed for a brief second and was surprised to see the protective charm, "Ohh, goddess, Al. You told me you didn’t find it after searching at the banquet. So, where did you even get this? Huhh?"
"This~ ...." Alaric flinched at his brother’s words. If Brave didn’t leave it behind, then who did?’ Alex was puzzled. ’Who could it be?’
Alaric sneakily glanced at Elisa as he said, "I~ ... find it~ ... at the burnt down cottage. The place where you rescued Myra."
There was a flicker of horror that flashed across Elisa’s face. Though it was for a nanosecond, Alaric saw it clearly. His doubts clearing up. It was not one of his brother’s but Elisa, who left it behind.
But now the real question remained. How did she get her hands on it? And if she did, why didn’t she return back? What is she trying to do exactly?
Elisa, when her eyes landed on the bracelet, realized what stupid thing she had done. She wanted to smack herself for leaving that damned string behind. Last night, when she was setting the place on fire and dragging those pigheaded vampires towards the entryway, it might have slipped off.
