Chapter 249: Threats

Violet even went ahead to cross her legs as she placed both her arms on the armrest of the chair. A subtle smirk lingered at the corners of her lips as she stared at the Lords who were on their feet, unable to shift their focus from Cain’s beast, which lay at her feet.

Not seeing a need to be polite enough to allow them to gather themselves and pressure her like before, Violet immediately opened her mouth and began to speak.

"Is there a reason you came?" she asked with a sly look on her face, not too surprised when the woman who had snapped at her the moment she walked in was the same one who spoke again.

"...and why should we tell you! You’re simply Cain’s whore!" Harriet snapped, her anger only worsening the more she stared at Violet, whose expression was completely blank as she stared right back.

Her gaze measured as she leaned back into the chair she sat on, slowly responding, "I let you in!" Violet said, indirectly showing just how much power she had, at least in the mansion. "If there’s no reason why you came, I can have the guards lead you—"

She was interrupted by Lord Grainger, who didn’t let her finish and didn’t even consider it rude to do so as he stared at the human in front of him, aware that if she were a werewolf, she would have fallen to her knees the second she entered.

"We’re here because Cain has obviously gone insane! A beast cannot rule a district!" he pointed out, even as Lord Magnus, who stood not far away from him, vigorously nodded his head and added to what he said.

"Cain is clearly not well, and seeing as how he has no descendants, then—" but he was still speaking when suddenly a loud growl thundered through the whole room, even as Cain’s beast rose to a standing position, one that easily towered over everything in the room. Its red eyes flashed with such menace, especially toward Lord Magnus, that he couldn’t help but instantly take a step back.

This instantly pleased Violet, who realized that the fact that Cain could get angry at what was being said meant that his mind wasn’t completely gone.

For a moment, the silence that descended upon the room was deafening as no one dared to speak. Cain’s beast was huge, and even with all of them there, there was no proof that they could all defeat him if they attacked together! Worse, the moment one person got attacked, there was no reason for the others to put their lives in danger for the other.

When finally the beast no longer bristled in what looked like anger, lowering himself back to the ground, it was Lord Eldric who opened his mouth to speak.

"We came to check his condition, and it’s clear that he’s not completely in his right mind!" he began. "When next we come, we won’t come as peacefully as we did today!" The threat in his tone was exceedingly clear as he spoke, making it known that even she would be affected.

"He might listen to you now, but do you think he wouldn’t hesitate to kill you the moment he finally loses his mind?" Eldric asked, speaking with a hint of concern in his tone as he did.

"If you leave, no harm will come to you when we level this mansion!" Magnus added, the arrogant look back on his face, replacing the terrified one he previously had. But he had just spoken when Cain’s beast slowly turned its head to look at him.

Eldric wasn’t one to play with his life, and he immediately took a couple of steps to the side, distancing himself away from Magnus, just to be sure that the beast wouldn’t make a mistake while attacking.

Among the five of them, only four spoke, with Lady Bella keeping quiet as she stood on the farthest part of the room, her guard standing behind her quietly like the men the other lords had brought, not daring to make a sound.

She was the youngest, and the only reason she was on the council was simply because her father was still recovering from a strange illness he was suddenly afflicted with. She had entered with the others, only to spring back in alarm when she saw a beast almost the size of the huge room break down the door and step in.

Her eyes widened with shock at how brave and stupid Magnus was acting, even after it was apparent that the beast not only didn’t like him, but the way it sat on the ground looked like it was simply crouching to attack.

"We should run the moment something happens!" Drey, her assistant and bodyguard, whispered from behind her, not caring that others would hear, even as Bella instantly nodded her head.

I shouldn’t have come! she thought, annoyed at how she couldn’t give an excuse, considering the fact that werewolves healed pretty fast, and unless it was something really bad like a terrible attack, no one would believe her. Worse, she would appear like a coward and would be misrepresenting both her father and their district.

I just need to hang in here! she thought to herself, even as she listened to the conversation that was getting more heated in a way that worried her.

"You will level this mansion?" Violet asked with a crease of worry on her face, one that she instantly smoothed, unwilling to allow his words to get to her as she stared at the lord who had just spoken.

"Cain is a beast now! This means that he needs to di—"

But even Grainger wasn’t stupid enough to let him finish, especially with the low growls of displeasure that had been crooning from the beast’s throat.

"Magnus means that it’s dangerous, and it would be better to remove a few before it becomes a problem for the many!" Grainger said, shaking his head in an almost caring manner as he noticed that Violet was about to speak, not allowing her to.

"He might not be violent now, but according to precedence, when it happens...everyone here will die!" Grainger announced in a tone that showed that it was impossible for there to be any other conclusion. "...including yourself! Considering how long he has been in his beast form, I’m sure he needs to be fed! We have beasts, but we’re humans first! We don’t remain in our beast form for a reason!"

But the more Violet listened to what they had to say, the more annoyed she became as she rested her arm on the chair and her chin on her hand, looking at all of them, especially the ones who chose to speak. Her gaze darted to Lady Bella, who simply watched, her focus more on the door than anything else.

At that point, Violet had heard enough as she got to her feet and spoke with a slightly exasperated tone. "I’ve heard you! You may leave!" she said in a clearly displeased tone, only to find out that she wasn’t the only one who felt that way as Magnus, who had been trying to keep a lid on his anger, suddenly exploded.

"WHAT! Did we simply toss words into the air!" his voice rose as he spoke, even as he huffed in anger, eyes blazing as he stepped forward. Too angry to notice the hint of a smile on Eldric’s face as he watched from the side.

While Cain had simply injured him, Eldric was confident that if that beast attacked, even pieces of his bones wouldn’t be found, and he simply kept quiet as he impatiently waited to see how things would play out.

"The moment Cain became a beast, unable to communicate with his own kind...you became NOTHING!" Magnus yelled down at her, but Violet had already had enough as she signaled to Henry, who immediately let out a shrill whistle that instantly sent rows of guards appearing at the broken doorway.

Most of them were professional enough to hide their shock at the broken door and walls, but a few of them couldn’t help but widen their eyes as they stood there, waiting for Henry’s further instructions as he stepped closer to Violet.

"I will lead everyone out!" he said with a nod, gesturing toward the doorways still filled with broken pieces of concrete.

Lady Bella was the first to move, with a slight expression of relief on her face. Harriet followed with a huff. Right after was Grainger and Eldric, who looked a little ticked off that Magnus somehow gained control over his madness when he needed him to unleash it the most.

Regardless, he had gotten what he came for, and all that was left was for all of them to collectively attack Cain and destroy him.

I’ll make sure that Ravon increases the dosage of the red potion, even in the meat being fed to him, Eldric thought, willing to use all the resources he wanted if it got him what he desired.

Magnus, eyes scrunched up in anger, glared right at Violet before turning around to leave, all of them about to leave together with Violet walking behind them. She went as far as to send them out to their various cars, even as she moved closer to Lady Bella’s own, stopping her before she could get in, to Bella’s surprise.

"Is there something—" Bella gasped in horror, shrinking back at the sight of the beast that clung to Violet’s back as she walked. Bella tapped her chest to not allow herself to look too scared, even if she was. A huge frown on her face when Violet interrupted her.

"By chance, have you heard of a way to make him turn back into his human form?" she asked, aware that the others were too antagonistic to even care.

But Bella was still shaking her head, wanting to enter the car as fast as she could, when she suddenly froze in thought, saying the only thing she could think of. "Finding his mate might help!" Bella said with a shrug, aware that the chances of that happening were too low since it was something that was controlled by fate.

In excitement, Violet was just about to say more, only to shrink back when she noticed that the others were paying attention to them.

Moreover, could she actually trust the young woman in front of her? Nodding her head, she waved as she watched Bella get back in the car and watched them leave.
