Chapter 33: Be Careful

"Still! We need to reduce how often we meet. We’ll probably have to destroy your phone line and fix it again!" Vazer sighed, a soft smile on his face as he focused his gaze on Cain, whose eyes were fixed more on the wine bottle he was pouring for himself. Picking another cup, Cain poured water into it, sliding it over to Vazer, who chuckled out loud as he fixed his gaze on it.

"It’s not like you can taste anything!" Cain said seriously, even as Vazer looked even more amused. He nodded his head and grabbed a bottle of wine, which he slowly poured into his glass, lifting it to drink simply to get a rise out of Cain — which he did.

"Hmmmm! Delicious!" Vazer’s smile widened as he met Cain’s stormy gaze, which looked like he would like nothing more than to toss the glass out of his hands. Cain also took a huge gulp from his own glass.

"You look... good!" Vazer commented as he continued to sip from his cup without any change in his expression, waiting for Cain to speak, especially about the reason why he had demanded they meet.

But instead of talking, Cain continued to sip from his glass, one brow raised. Vazer let out a loud sigh as he slowly nodded his head, indicating that his bodyguards had swept through the entire place and there was no way their conversation would be heard.

"Is the potion working better?" Vazer finally asked, his curiosity no longer allowing him to wait for Cain’s tight-lipped silence to break.

"No! It’s worse!" Cain responded, sitting down with his legs apart, slowly taking off his coat. Neither of them had done so earlier, considering the short duration they expected the conversation to take.

"You found a cure?" A bit of excitement leaked into Vazer’s voice, though his expression remained mostly blank as he leaned into the sofa he sat on, a slightly impatient glint in his eyes.

"NO!" Cain responded. By then, Vazer’s annoyance was starting to show as he hissed under his breath.

"Then what is it?" Vazer’s eyes darkened, focused solely on Cain, who leaned forward ever so slightly, clasping his hands between his legs with a severe look on his face as he began to speak.

"Have you ever heard of a werewolf with a male mate before?" Cain asked.

Vazer couldn’t help but look stunned — an expression that only lasted for a couple of seconds before it completely disappeared, almost like it had never been there.

Vazer didn’t say a word at first, slowly processing the depth of Cain’s question. His gaze roved over Cain, noting his clear, non-fatigued eyes — a sight he hadn’t seen in a very long time after the potions had begun to make the curse worse.

"Never! Not in my many years alive... and trust me, I’ve lived long enough to know!" he said with a serious look on his face, speaking more hesitantly. "...Are you sure? There have been others who’ve said the same thing before." There was a slight warning in his tone as he spoke, trying to remind Cain of the many who had come his way and gone as far as using various means to pretend to be the solution he needed.

"It’s rare for a werewolf to meet a mate. The chances are extremely low. How many do you know?" Vazer’s doubts were clear. Cain shook his head slowly before speaking, leaning back against the sofa he sat on.

"I thought so too until I controlled my wolf!" Cain said.

This time, Vazer couldn’t keep the extreme look of shock off his face. The first thing he did was look around, almost like he wanted to ensure again that they were indeed alone. His tone dropped an octave lower as he spoke.

"Who knows about this?" Vazer asked, his red eyes burning with renewed fervor. "Lord Eldric doesn’t know about this?" He continued without pause, answering his own question. "There’s no way he would have allowed it!"

"A male mate..." Vazer mumbled under his breath, his lashes fluttering before he chuckled aloud, clearly amused as he stared at Cain, who looked at him with a curious gaze, wondering what he suddenly found so funny.

"No one knows! The idea alone... This is good. This is very good!"

"I haven’t taken the medicine for two nights, and as long as I’m with him, I can stop myself from changing."

"You can also control it!" Vazer added.

Cain nodded to confirm.

"Good! We’ll keep this a secret for now! I’ll also try to find more information about male mates!" Vazer said, smiling in a way that showed he was trying to hold back laughter, to Cain’s immense annoyance.

Vazer’s expression became more severe as he darted a glance at the time on his wrist. "Lord Javi is planning something, and I don’t know what it is. All I know is that it’s against a werewolf district, and I know he has inside help!"

"You think a werewolf lord would help a lunatic like him?"

"I’m sure a werewolf lord is helping a lunatic like him! You should try and find out or at least keep watch and be careful!" Vazer said as he got to his feet. Their relationship had started as allies, but even he wasn’t sure when it had grown deeper.

"You’re bound to die before me, but I’d hate to see you die now!" he said, adjusting his coat as he made to leave, already taking a few steps toward the door. He turned around to speak to Cain, who was still seated and would remain there for another hour to ensure they didn’t leave together.

"I’d be careful of your mate if I were you..." he added.

Cain instantly shook his head, frowning, understanding a second later that Vazer wasn’t talking about strength.

"He’s a man! I’m not attracted to men, Vazer!" Cain snapped, a biting tone in his voice.

Vazer merely whistled under his breath as he walked out the door without saying another word.
