Mated to the Mad Lord-Chapter 62: We need to talk
Chapter 62: We need to talk
Her hand jerked away the second she made contact with it, her cheeks blazing red with embarrassment even as she felt Cain grab her waist and pull her back closer to him.
"If you want to touch—"
"Lo-lord Cain!" Violet said, interrupting him before he could finish. She knew that after the kiss, things would be slightly different, but still, she hadn’t expected it to be that different.
Yet, Violet wasn’t sure it was a good thing that Cain was somehow attracted to her body when there was nothing special about it.
Seconds ticked by with Violet listening to nothing but the thumping of her heart as she leaned away, glad to feel Cain not pulling her back, even if she was still unable to extricate herself from his arms.
If he needs a hug to calm his beast, can’t he get someone else? she thought, wondering why he easily admitted that she wasn’t easily replaceable.
Still, her breathing finally evened out when she discovered that Cain had finally fallen asleep, which allowed her to also relax enough to slowly start to drift to sleep.
Like usual, by the time she woke up, Cain was no longer lying beside her, and the room was in shambles. Cain had just walked out of the bathroom as Violet scrambled off the bed, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes.
She turned to look at him, only to immediately shift her gaze away as she greeted him before heading straight to her own room where she could bathe, change her clothes, and get ready. She was just about to make her escape when she heard Cain suddenly speak to her.
"When you’re done, step out. We need to talk," he said, walking toward his table and taking a seat.
Violet’s lashes fluttered in fright as she began to ruminate over what Cain could possibly want to say to her.
Her bathing speed was faster than usual, only to slow down the second she began to dress up. Her mind raced with thoughts. Did he find out? Did something happen while I was asleep? Did I do something wrong?
A few minutes later, she was dressed and standing in front of her door, knowing she could no longer continue to hesitate. Grabbing the door handle, she stepped out, closing it behind her. Her gaze landed on Cain, who was already sitting at his desk.
Violet immediately moved closer, stopping when she stood about a foot away from the table, watching him focus on a report as he scribbled on another, waiting for him to turn his gaze toward her.
It only took a few seconds before he dropped the sheets on the table, raising his gaze to look squarely at her. Then, he gestured for her to come closer. Violet took one step forward, only for Cain to motion for her to move right around the table and stand even closer.
The simple gesture made her heart start to race as she met his golden-brown gaze, her eyes roving over every inch of him, even as she pretended not to look, lowering her gaze as she stepped closer until she stood directly in front of him.
Cain leaned back in his chair, his eyes never leaving her. "Just because we’re men doesn’t mean we can’t have a—" he began, and Violet felt a sinking feeling in her belly. She instantly understood what he wanted to talk about.
He wanted to make it clear that their relationship would go beyond what they already had, and knowing Cain like she did, he was probably informing her, not asking for her opinion.
"...relationship. I want you, and I know without a doubt that you feel—"
But Cain was still speaking when a knock was suddenly heard at the door, interrupting him. Cain ordered the person to enter, and the head of his guards walked in, kneeling on one knee the second he shut the door behind him.
"Lord Eldric has sent a message. He wants to see you before the council meeting this afternoon," Frank informed him.
Cain nodded his head before allowing him to leave.
Violet had heard the name before, and from the numerous rumors flying around the mansion, she knew that Lord Eldric was Cain’s uncle—a powerful man on the council. What she didn’t understand was why he didn’t just call Cain to inform him.
She was even more surprised to see a deep frown flash across Cain’s face when he heard the message, one that immediately disappeared a second later as though it had never been there.
Violet watched as Cain rose to his feet. "We’ll continue this conversation when I come back," he said as he picked up a black jacket and threw it on, heading toward the door.
Honestly, I’d prefer if we didn’t, Violet thought as he left, closing the door behind him.
She waited for a moment, ensuring he wouldn’t come back, before moving to sit on the high bed in the room. It felt more like hers than her own ever did.
"Now that he’s gone, I just need to figure out how to leave Cain’s side without him being aware and open the side doors of the mansion," Violet mumbled under her breath.
Her voice turned softer as she added, "How to get more money so that my family and I can run away and never come back, and how to stop Cain’s advances before it’s too late, and he finds out I’m not actually a man."
She threw herself back onto the bed, landing right in the center. Burying her face into the sheets, she took a deep whiff, surprised by how much she liked the scent. freewebnσvel.cѳm
"...I should add, how to make sure not to get invested in Cain to the list," she mumbled, recalling how hard it sometimes was to remember that this same man had killed many people and had almost shot her in the face.
Yet here she was, enjoying the smell of his sheets.
She sighed deeply, staring up at the ceiling. Why does he have to make it so hard to hate him?
