Mated to the Mad Lord-Chapter 65: I refuse!
Chapter 65: I refuse!
"...and who is it that you’d like me to kill?" Cain asked, his eyes much colder than before as he focused them on Eldric, who immediately responded with a vastly annoyed expression on his face.
"Who else but Lord Grainger!" he responded with a nasty look on his face, like he smelled something disgusting that he needed to distance himself from.
"He is a thorn in my—"
"Yes! He opposes every word you say and fights against you on every proposal in the council. Why do you want me to kill him?" Cain asked again, ignoring the murderous look Eldric sent his way after he interrupted him without allowing him to finish.
"What changed?" Cain asked with mild curiosity, even though he already knew the answer Eldric was going to give—one that he wasn’t going to like.
"He’s been trying to gather more lords towards me to openly oppose the proposal I passed for a king to be elected!"
"I need that proposal passed!" Eldric barked, to which Cain subtly nodded his head in understanding, even as he kept his thoughts to himself.
Of course, how else would you be able to make yourself a king, he thought as he heard Eldric continue to speak.
"He’s been a thorn in my flesh, but now, he’s a rot that needs to be burned away!"
Cain continued to stare at his uncle while nodding his head, even as he watched Eldric nod back with a slightly satisfied look on his face, thinking that Cain had accepted. It was at that moment that Cain finally chose to open his mouth and speak.
"I’m sorry, but I won’t be able to kill him! I don’t kill people for pleasure!" Cain said, not surprised to see anger burn passionately in his uncle’s eyes as he turned the intensity of it towards him.
"You killed my butler!" Eldric seethed through gritted teeth, to which Cain had the audacity to chuckle as he leaned into the chair, his hands folded together on his lap.
"Yeah, it was a split-moment thought, and I’m not even sure I enjoyed it!" Cain sighed, lying through his teeth as he continued to speak.
"Lord Grainger hasn’t done anything to me, so I see no reason—" Cain spoke only to be cut off by Eldric, who jumped to his feet, glaring down at Cain as he slowly enunciated his words with difficulty, looking like he wanted nothing more than to pounce on Cain.
"If you don’t, then you can forget about the medicine!" Eldric said, clearly threatening him—one that sounded more like a promise—even as Cain, who had been smiling, immediately sobered up, most of the expression on his face a mask he purposely put on for Eldric to see.
"Why!" Cain’s voice carried a pissed-off edge as he began to speak, "...because I refuse to be used as an assassin when you could have your guards take care of it? Any one of your assassins would have been able to get the job done!" Cain said, getting on his feet as he raised his voice to show just how unsettled he felt about the idea of the medicine being used as leverage against him.
"...but using you sends a bigger message! You will do as I say, or you might as well completely become a mad dog!" Eldric boldly swore at him, even as Cain chuckled bitterly, a smile on his face as he responded while shaking his head. freewёbnoνel.com
"I refuse! Moreover, I have enough to last me for a while. Ravon doesn’t exactly keep his stash hidden!" Cain said, making it clear that killing Grainger wasn’t negotiable and something he wouldn’t do.
"...and what will happen when your stash finishes...yes, you’ll come crawling on all fours begging for more!"
Cain didn’t respond as he simply stared intensely at Eldric before turning around and heading toward the door to leave, only to see the dozen guards who stood in front of him move to block his path.
Cain, who had already been boiling with anger, immediately jerked back to glare at Eldric as he spoke, "I’d advise that you tell them to make way before I send them flying in pieces!" His voice was raised and laced with a threat that he didn’t even try to hide.
His golden-brown eyes were much darker as the tension in the room increased, even as Cain unleashed the fullness of his aura, which was enough to make some guards fall to the ground, unable to guard against it. Especially since Eldric himself wasn’t immune to the intense pressure.
Waving his hand a few minutes later, Eldric ordered them to part and allow Cain to leave, which they immediately did, almost with relief visible on their faces as they closed the door behind him.
But they had just done that when Eldric dashed into their midst with a sword in his hand, which he had picked from one of the people on the ground.
One after the other, he cut every single guard who had fallen onto the ground into two, wiping the bloody sword and his hand on the uniform of the last one as he spat right into the dead man’s face.
"Trash! All of you!" he screamed at them with visible anger in his tone as he did so. The thought that, regardless of their numerous numbers, Cain was still a threat to him pissed him off beyond words as he clenched the sword in his hands, staring at the remaining guards who didn’t dare to meet his gaze.
He glared at them, wondering if he should simply kill them all.
But the thought had just popped into his mind when the sound of a door being opened from within the room was heard. A stack of bookshelves suddenly moved to reveal a young woman with long black hair and a beautifully aesthetic face slowly walking towards Eldric with a bright smile on her face.
"Father!" she called out, her voice enough to make Eldric reconsider as she walked closer to him.
With a single gesture, he immediately waved his hand, ordering the rest of the guards to leave, which they immediately did as fast as their legs could carry them while carrying the bodies of their dead colleagues with them.
They were clearly dissatisfied but knew better than to open their mouths and complain, since a second ago, their own lives had teetered on the brink of being wiped out.
