Chapter 268: The Oddity of a Tank

The Wormgod still had many abilities in its arsenal.

[Age of Worms] was employed with precision, targeting specific targets and inflicting the parasitic disease on non-suspecting players.

It wasn’t an area-of-effect skill, but any unfortunate soul infected would instantly transform into an undead, and no potion or spell could rescue them.

Typically, it targeted the highest damage dealers, but thanks to the Tanks controlling the aggro, this specific skill honed in on the Tank ranks.

Unlike AoE, which had a wide area of effect and could damage anyone nearby even if the aggro was on the Tanks, this particular skill singled out individuals.

Unfortunately, the ill-fated Tank in its crosshairs happened to be Hilda disguised as Gilbert.

Hilda was engrossed in her own affairs, navigating through the battlefield with only one purpose: to make sure that Lord Schrodinger was safe.

She was minding her own business of staying low-key when the spell struck her.

At first, it was a subtle disturbance in the air, a sensation that something unusual was afoot. Then, like a cascade of eerie vibrations, the necrotic energy enveloped her.

She felt an unsettling tingle as if an army of tiny worms sought entry into her digital form.

Yet, Hilda, immune to all status effects, including necrotic damage and the curse of undead, remained undeterred. It was as if an invisible shield surrounded her, deflecting the malevolent attack effortlessly.

To onlookers, including the guild leaders who closely monitored the battle, this unexpected turn of events baffled and confounded them.

The Wormgod, renowned for its devastating ace — [Age of Worms], a skill designed to instantly claim the lives of any player — seemed to not have taken effect.

The guild leaders, well-versed in the strategies necessitated by the Wormgod’s lethal abilities, had fortified their ranks with an abundance of Tanks to counter this specific threat.

The painful memory of Steel Striker falling victim to the Wormgod’s onslaught during the previous encounter haunted their strategic decisions. The loss of a Tank within the initial three days had been a grave mistake, one they vowed not to repeat this time.

However, in this strange twist of fate, none of their Tanks had fallen when the Wormgod unleashed its ace.

Doubt gnawed at them. Had they miscalculated the Wormgod’s tactics? Were their interpretation of its abilities flawed?

The anticipation of [Age of Worms] lingered like a menacing specter, an impending doom that had not materialized as expected.

They didn’t know who had been affected amongst the Tanks. Their only way of knowing was when the Tank had fallen. But there was none so far . . .

Could they have been mistaken, and the Wormgod hadn’t actually unleashed its ace?

Amidst the confusion, Hilda was oblivious to everything except the well-being of Lord Schrodinger.

However, the Wormgod kept targeting her without her knowing what it was. Annoyance crept into her with the constant prickling sensation she felt, and without knowing it, she unleashed a blow on the Wormgod, roaring.

"Cut it out!"

A surge of energy emanated from her, transcending the limitations of the Castle of Doom. With a single, resounding strike, Hilda’s weapon unleashed her power connected with the Wormgod.

The force of her blow was nothing short of seismic. It sent shockwaves through the landscape, creating ripples that forcefully propelled everyone near the impact meters away from the epicenter.

The health bar of the Wormgod, once towering in the six-digit realm, plummeted to three digits in an instant.

Stunned silence enveloped the spectators, their faces frozen in disbelief.

The guild members, witnessing the spectacle, couldn’t fathom the sheer potency concealed within the unassuming Tank named Gilbert.

The guild leaders stared wide-eyed at the unavailable display, struggling to reconcile the oddness of a Tank possessing such unimaginable power.

Among the Shadowblades, Gilbert’s guild mates, a chorus of disbelief echoed through the air. They had fought alongside him countless times, but the revelation of this hidden skill left them dumbfounded.

Was it a secret ability, carefully concealed until this critical moment?

The air buzzed with speculation and awe as they grappled with the revelation that their fellow guild member harbored such extraordinary strength.

The other players, not directly involved with Gilbert, found themselves unable to comprehend the magnitude of what had just occurred.

A Tank, traditionally associated with resilience rather than raw power, delivers a blow that defies all expectations.

Xin, on the other hand, found himself grappling with a wholly different shock. How could Hilda blow her cover like that?

Thankfully, the majority thought that it was Gilbert’s hidden skill.

Xin swiftly recovered and sent a direct message to Hilda. It was crucial to abandon their current avatars as soon as possible, avoiding any opportunity for others to question her about the recent events.

Hilda responded with a nod of agreement. With another twirl of her giant hammer, a whirlwind of dust enveloped the battlefield.

In that critical moment, Hilda and Xin seamlessly assumed new identities.

This time, they took on the roles of a healer and a mage, shifting to the other group.

Xin was concerned that Fury and Behemoth’s group might run out of DPS and Tank if they continued killing their own members, so they chose to take on another group to keep everything balance.

Xin knew that the leaders would find out about the oddity soon enough, but until then . . . he would keep them guessing who the intruder was.

As they assumed their new identities, Xin became a Mage named Millie Milky, and Hilda adopted the role of a Healer named Mother Teresa.

Xin couldn’t help but sigh at the eccentricity of the chosen names. However, he refrained from passing judgment, mindful of his own account named as Lord Schrödinger.

It was the first time Xin had taken over a woman’s identity, and it left him feeling somewhat uncomfortable.

With a scarcity of male characters in the healer and mage departments, this choice became a necessity in their haste.

In the rush to switch identities, there was little time to deliberate on whose avatar they would inhabit. The urgency of the situation compelled them to make quick decisions, setting the stage for a new Chapter in their identity.
