Chapter 601: Chapter 89: The Rootless Netherworld (Part 2)
"Netherworld Continent is immensely vast," said Bai Shaoze. "Based on the information we have so far, it’s about half the size of the Star Sea."
Lu Hong was very surprised. "Is it really that big?"
"Much more than that," Bai Shaoze spoke up. "As far as I know, the Netherworld Continent is a landmass that grows on its own, expanding constantly. Given enough time, surpassing the size of Star Sea is certainly possible."
"Since the land is abundant, why then does the Netherworld still wage wars abroad?" Lu Hong voiced his own confusion.
Bai Shaoze shrugged. "That, I don’t know."
Bai Shaoze was knowledgeable about the Netherworld, but when it came to the internal politics and military issues of the Netherworld, he was not qualified to access that information.
The soil of the Netherworld was vast, and there was no glow from the sun or the moon, only the endless wailing of lost souls before them, and the rest was cloaked in a grey fog.
Apart from that, below their feet was pale land. For four continuous days, the places Lu Hong passed through had no mountains, vegetation, or rivers; the whole Netherworld seemed like a vast frozen tundra. Living alone here would definitely drive one insane.
"Most of the resources in the Netherworld are buried underground, like this compass stone I hold." These days, Bai Shaoze had been relying on this object to navigate, leading Lu Hong towards the outpost leading to the center of the Netherworld.
Through the dense fog, a corner of a huge ancient city emerged.
This was Mansha City, the second city of the Netherworld built during the reign of the Netherworld God. The entire city is constructed from the Netherworld’s underground ten-thousand meters deep grey-rock, possessing formidable defense capabilities. Even a full blow from someone at Third Transition Peak wouldn’t be able to break through.
Due to the passage of time and the growth of Netherworld’s beings, the original Mansha City had also undergone several expansions, transforming into the behemoth it is today, spanning three thousand miles—it’s truly vast and boundless.
"Duke, if someone approaches to inquire, you just need to say you belong to the Bai family, and leave the rest to me."
"Okay," Lu Hong nodded and followed Bai Shaoze into the ancient city.
The Netherworld hardly scrutinized any registry identities, as living humans couldn’t enter the Netherworld Continent. Thus, they weren’t wary of outsiders. Moreover, Mansha City wasn’t privately owned territory; it was one of the rare public territories in the Netherworld, also unthreatened by the specter of war.
When Bai Shaoze showed his identity token, the Netherworld guards at the city gate let them through without a single question.
Walking into this huge Netherworld metropolis, it was nothing like Star Sea with its bustling street vendors; the shops were few and far between.
Bai Shaoze explained, "Nether citizens subsist on consuming Nether energy, and this land doesn’t produce much food, so commerce isn’t very thriving."
"Where then do their clothes come from?" Lu Hong asked, pointing at the Netherworld people walking on the streets.
"They are made from the hides of Nether beasts hunted from underground; the same goes for items woven from vegetation. The Netherworld underground has a very rich ecosystem, yet vegetation is extremely rare. Apart from families like ours in the Netherworld, only the wealthy and prestigious wear robes. These people are troublesome, so it’s best not to get involved with them."
Bai Shaoze led Lu Hong to the city’s central transport gate. In the Netherworld’s harsh environment, resources were precious, making the construction of transport gates particularly difficult. However, compared to Star Sea, Netherworld’s transport gates were more utilitarian. They were carefully planned when first constructed hence, once opened, they never close. This means, you pay once and can use it for life, unlike in Star Sea where each use must be supported with enough Magic Power or substituted by Crystal Stones.
The Mansha City gate linked directly to Netherworld Royal City, the largest main city of the Netherworld, ten times larger than Mansha City, but the central Nether Palace was even bigger than Jinrui City.
Lu Hong’s journey was destined for this royal city. Because of its vast distance, the transportation took more than two days.
As Lu Hong and Bai Shaoze tumbled out of the spatial rift, they were dizzy and nauseated.
Bai Shaoze, having experienced this before, recovered quickly. Ignoring the mockery from the surrounding Nether citizens, he quickly helped Lu Hong up and hastened their departure.
"Why didn’t you tell me earlier,,,,,,ugh~~~!"
Bai Shaoze gave a bitter smile. "Even if I had told you earlier, you would still have had to endure this hardship."
After finding a random inn, Bai Shaoze let Lu Hong rest temporarily while he went to report upwards and arranged for an opportunity for Lu Hong to meet with the residents.
Since there was no sun or moon, Lu Hong didn’t know what time it was after recovering. Being in a strange royal city, he couldn’t just run around, so he had to quietly wait for Bai Shaoze’s update.
It was a long time before Bai Shaoze finally arrived at the inn with an old man.
He respectfully invited the elder into the room and introduced him to Lu Hong. "This is Mr. Fermar, the current clan elder of the Ryanst family."
On the way here, Bai Shaoze had introduced Lu Hong to the four top families of the Netherworld, among which the Ryanst family was one, and apart from the clan leader, the biggest authority in the family was the three clan elders.
Leaving aside the gods of the Netherworld, the four sovereigns are the top leaders of the Netherworld. Below these four leaders are the four clan leaders ranked in the second tier, and below them are the twelve clan elders, who also hold great power.
"Mr. Fermar, greetings." Lu Hong stood up and bowed, expressing his respect.
Fermar chuckled and waved his hand. "There’s no need for such formalities, young lord. Technically speaking, as the spokesperson for the gods, your status is higher than mine."
Though he said this, Fermar did not make any further gestures, for the Heavenly God no longer existed, and the lord’s status might not be regarded by others.
This sort of arrogant demeanor from one of the top figures in the Netherworld was something Lu Hong understood, so he didn’t mind it. Since he was the one asking for help, it was only right for him to lower his stance.
"Duke Divine’s name I have long heard, and seeing you today, you indeed stand out among men. I have asked you to travel thousands of miles to the royal city this time to seek your help in persuading the Governor. Are you prepared for this?" Fermar wasted no words and went straight to the point.
Lu Hong shook his head. "I have never met the Governor, sir, and I really do not know how to prepare, but I will do my best."
Fermar didn’t blame him but nodded. "Alright, the Governor will open the governing council tomorrow at the Great Hall. After this session, I will introduce you, and I hope you seize this opportunity."
With that, Fermar stood up to leave and, reaching the door, turned back to Lu Hong. "Also, you’d better not wander around; the prison warden has somehow learned of your arrival in the Netherworld and has ordered a search for you."
"Understood." Lu Hong nodded. Mentioning the prison warden, Lu Hong’s expression instantly darkened; that man had caused trouble on the mercenary continent and had his plans foiled by Lu Hong. If found by him, Lu Hong would undoubtedly face death.
After seeing off the clan elder Fermar, Bai Shaoze came back inside. "Lord Duke, you need not worry too much about what the clan elder said. There are rules in the royal city, and as long as you are in the city, no one can lay a hand on you."
"Alright." Lu Hong nodded. Although what Bai Shaoze said was correct, rules are made by people, and there are naturally ways to circumvent them in the dark. Lu Hong did not want to experience the warden’s tricks, so staying in the inn was the safest option.
However, what puzzled him was why the Ryanst family, if choosing to help the Human Race, had not taken him to their family domain but instead settled him in an inn?
Perhaps they had their own schemes, but no matter what, as long as it helped the Human Race address the current crisis, even knowing the risks, Lu Hong would still choose to try.
Time flew by, and hearing Bai Shaoze calling from outside the door, Lu Hong left his meditation and opened the door.
At that moment, Bai Shaoze looked around nervously and then said to Lu Hong, "Quick, follow me. The prison warden knows your purpose for coming this time and is personally having people hunt for you. Let’s go meet the Governor!"
Following Bai Shaoze, the two continuously navigated through the labyrinth-like royal city of the Netherworld. With the help of the Ryanst family, they safely arrived at the Governor’s residence without any danger.
The Governor lived in the eastern part of the Central Region of the Netherworld, overseeing all political activities within the Netherworld, holding all administrative power, and was virtually the boss of all Netherworld families with absolute authority and the foremost among the four sovereigns of the Netherworld.
