Chapter 704: Ambush

The moment Beatrice opened the box of jade slips and thin manuals, the mood changed.

The kids who had been smiling just a second ago all turned quiet.

Some even took a small step back.

Beatrice noticed it at once and frowned.

"What’s wrong?"

No one answered.

The older kids lowered their heads. Even the little ones hugged their food and toys tighter.

Beatrice looked at the manuals in her hand, then at their faces.

"These are for you," she said. "Why are you looking like that?"

The silence dragged on for a few more seconds.

Then one of the older boys finally spoke.

"Brother Ballen got sent out last month."

Beatrice froze.

"What?"

The boy clenched his fists.

"He train as hard as he can, he barely sleeping, but He failed the yearly test," he said. "They sent him to an E-grade planet."

Some of the smaller kids lowered their heads even more.

One little girl who had just received a doll hugged it to her chest and bit her lip.

They don’t see the point for practicing at all.

Why even bother if the end result is still the same?

Rovan also paused. He looked at the manuals, then at the kids again.

’There’s no hope.’

Once as a child he also see this reality. People were born with different status and talent.

Some were lucky, some were not.

There’s exception case where individual can make their life better but in reality this is easier said than done.

Just how many people die trying?

It’s far easier to just accept reality and live as they should.

Beatrice’s fingers tightened slightly around the jade slip.

"Ballen..." she muttered.

She knew him.

He’s quiet, but very hardworking.

He used to come here often. Every time she brought books, he would be the first to ask for them.

Only now did she realize she had not seen him since arriving.

Her eyes slowly swept across the group, and then she noticed it

A few more faces were missing.

"Who else?" Beatrice asked.

This time, another child answered in a low voice.

"Sister Mira too."

"And Brother Joen," another one added.

"They all failed," the older boy said. "They got taken away."

Beatrice turned silent.

She never understand this, even tough this kids is bottom rung they still have some potential.

It maybe average on this planet, but if they’re given the right teaching, foundation and elixir they could still perform well.

Yet all this is locked form them, monopolized to certain group.

It’s like the goverment keep them on purpose.

If Alex were here he would confirm it to her.

The purpose is not that complicated, it’s tho show as example to motivate people to try harder, to not grow complacent.

They may have example like lower grade planet, but it’s all to far away from them.

Not enough to serve as deterrent.

Rovan looked at the kids and frowned.

’Even with all her effort at best one from one hundred kids will survive.

Isn’t this giving fake hope for the 99 other kids?

Rather than make them live in lie, isn’t it better to just teach them their place so they could accept reality?’

The older boy looked at the jade slips in Beatrice’s hand and forced out a bitter smile.

"Miss Beatrice... it’s not that we don’t want them.

It’s just... is it even worth it?"

The other kids lowered their heads.

One of them whispered, "If even Brother Ballen failed, what about us...?"

That one sentence made the whole place fall even quieter.

Beatrice stood there without speaking.

A moment ago, she only thought of giving them a chance.

Now she understood what those things meant to these kids.

Nothing in this world is black an white. Even hope could be dangerous.

Then she remembered some kids face. Those that choose to try and survive.

They had known the risk and still tried.

Beatrice let out a slow breath.

"Line up properly," she said.

The kids looked up.

Even Rovan turned to her.

Beatrice’s voice was calm, but firmer than before.

"Even if you could fail, that doesn’t mean you should give up. At the very least, if you try, you still have a chance to survive, to stay with your family.

But if you choose to give up, then you lose that chance."

"It’s easy for you to say that. Do you know what it feels like when you have a lot of hope, then suddenly get slapped by reality?

Isn’t it better to just choose to enjoy what you have, rather than risking everything?" Rovan suddenly asked while looking at Beatrice.

The kids became even more sullen, since that was what they all felt.

They had limited time with their families. Wasn’t it better to just stay with their friends and family?

Spend more time with them, enjoy life together, while preparing for the inevitable.

Beatrice glared at Rovan, making him look away.

But she could not deny that his words left her at a loss.

Just what should she say now? Keep motivating them? Or should she try to comfort them?

While she was deep in thought, one of the kids suddenly moved toward her.

"I don’t know about the others, but I already have no family left here. I will choose to try. Could I have one, Miss Beatrice?"

The question woke her up. She smiled, then gave him the cultivation method.

"Of course. Good luck, Zack. I hope you succeed."

The boy, Zack, nodded, then stepped aside with the jade slip held tightly in his hand.

The others looked at him with complicated expressions.

Some still lowered their heads, but a few of them slowly looked back at the box in Beatrice’s hands.

Seeing the boy, Beatrice found the words she needed to say.

She looked back at the kids.

"It’s fine if you all choose to give up.

That is also not an easy choice. But I think taking this method and trying will still help you in the future.

You do not need to train all day. Just learn what you can.

At the very least, it will help you protect yourself in the future."

The kids fell silent.

One of the older girls bit her lip, then slowly stepped forward.

"I want one too."

The fear in their eyes was still there, but now there was also hesitation mixed with hope.

Rovan watched the scene in silence.

Then suddenly, the whole area shook.

BZZZT!!

A formation light rose from the ground at the corners of the block.

In an instant, glowing lines spread across the streets, walls, and rooftops, locking the whole place down.

A suffocating pressure pressed down on everyone in the area.
