Chapter 248: Not Enough....

David landed in front of the shattered window—and without hesitation, jumped straight into Fiona’s apartment.

The room was dim. Several vases were broken. A table was flipped over. Heavy breathing came from behind the curtain to the right—and in the center of the room, a large snake with glistening purple scales slithered aggressively, its tongue flicking as it tasted the air, its body coiling like a living spiral.

But the strangest part...

Fiona was nowhere to be seen.

His eyes swept around—no direct sign of Fiona’s presence... until—

Sssshhhh...

David suddenly held his breath. The snake hissed again... but its head started moving toward the corner of the room, toward a dark area near the wardrobe. As if... something was there.

Or someone.

"...Camouflage?" David muttered.

And then he saw it—just a slight distortion in the air, like a thin layer of hot water blurring the view. A subtle movement. Then... a faint glimpse of Fiona’s body—her neck, her shoulder, and...

A white tank top.

Ugh, of course she’s still wearing that, David thought, half frustrated, half panicked.

Fiona—camouflaged by her skill—was holding her breath, completely still. But the snake drew closer... and closer... until its head—with glowing yellow eyes and flickering tongue—was inches away from Fiona’s chest!

It was so close, the snake’s face was practically aligned with the front of Fiona’s tank top.

Fiona trembled. But she didn’t move. Any slight motion could shatter the camouflage.

David clenched his teeth.

But before he could fully rise—

SSSHHRRAAAAHH!!!

The massive snake with glimmering purple scales suddenly snapped its head toward David. Its movement was fast, brutal, as if responding to even the slightest vibration. Its forked tongue flicked out, and its yellow eyes flared with fury.

David barely registered that the creature had just sniffed Fiona’s chest in the corner. But now... its focus had completely shifted.

And without delay—

BRUAAAGH!!

The serpent’s body shot forward like a giant mechanical whip, ramming into David with brutal force.

"Ugh—!!"

CRAASSSH!!

David was hurled back through the same window, flung from Fiona’s apartment floor down into the street. His body slammed into a tree and then rolled harshly across the asphalt, leaving trails of bruises and sparks from his gauntlet, which began activating on its own.

"Agh... damn it...!" he groaned, trying to stand as blood dripped from his mouth.

From the top of the apartment, the snake followed—slithering downward in a coiling motion, full of deadly grace.

And behind it... faintly, Fiona began to appear as she deactivated her camouflage skill.

She was still in the corner, trembling. Her white tank top was wrinkled, her breathing ragged. But her eyes locked onto David—full of guilt and fear.

"David... I’m sorry..."

David slowly stood, blood running from his temple, but electricity began crackling around both his arms. His gauntlets lit up brightly.

He wasn’t angry at Fiona.

He was angry at the otherworldly creature that nearly killed her.

"Thank God she’s still alive..." he whispered, swaying as he stood.

ZRAAAAK!!

His body surged with lightning, ready to face the monster that had just tried to sniff the chest of the woman he loved.

---

GRUUUUAAAARRRR!!!

One of the dimensional wolves leapt at Nathan with speed so fast it blurred the eye. Its body was like mist—heavy, yet it shot forward like a living shadow.

Nathan raised his hand—Wind condensed in his palm.

BOOOM!!

A pressure wave slammed into the air, knocking the first wolf away and hurling it into a streetlamp, which collapsed on impact. But two others followed instantly—one from the front, one from the right—moving in sync, coordinated.

Nathan sprang backward, but the enemies were fast and adaptive. Sharp claws nearly slashed his abdomen—he only survived because Validia blew wind at his legs, helping him make a desperate leap.

"...They attack like organic drones. No delay... no instinct like normal beasts." Nathan frowned. Sweat trickled down his temple. "These things... are military units."

Validia landed on the rooftop behind him, staying alert. "I can support you, but if I unleash large-scale magic, the civilians’ houses could catch fire...!"

Nathan gritted his teeth. One of the wolves circled around, then from a distance, fired a blast of violet energy from its mouth—a ranged attack!

Nathan threw out his hands—quickly forming a magic barrier, but—

ZRAAAAKKK!!

The explosion hit a neighboring rooftop! The wall collapsed. Flames began licking from within.

"Shit...!"

Validia instantly summoned wind to suppress the fire, but it was enough to disrupt her focus.

One of the wolves seized the moment. BOOM! It lunged at Nathan from behind.

Nathan tried to teleport—

Too late.

CRAAAGH!!

Sharp claws tore into Nathan’s shoulder, hitting bone and flinging his body through the wooden ceiling of a nearby house. Blood splattered.

"NATHAN!!"

Validia chased after him, sending a wave of wind that temporarily knocked the wolf back. But one of them was already approaching Nathan, who now lay in the living room of an abandoned house—his body battered, but still conscious.

He slowly rose, blood dripping from his chin. The violet crystal on the wolf’s forehead glowed brighter—the creature was preparing to end the fight.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

The monster’s footsteps sounded heavy... yet deliberate.

The violet glow from its crystal reflected against the walls of the ruined living room. The sofa burned in one corner, wallpaper peeled away, and wooden dust drifted in the air—a testament to the devastation caused by a single brutal strike. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

Nathan knelt, one hand bracing himself, the other gripping his torn shoulder.

Blood... too much loss...

His vision blurred. His breath came in ragged gasps. But his eyes still burned with light.

"Nggh... Not yet..."

The monster advanced. Its jaws opened, producing a clicking sound like a weapon being cocked. Then it lunged—

GRRRUUAAAGHH!!!

A split second before the claws could shred Nathan’s face—

TSSHHHHHHH!!!

WHUUUUZZZHH!!

A spiraling blast of high‑pressure wind slammed into the wolf’s head, hurling it into the wall like a sack of rice fired from a cannon.

Validia descended from the ceiling, her face pale but furious. The horns she usually kept hidden now re‑emerged, as if summoned by her anger.

Behind her, Nathan began to rise slowly. As the First Commander of Earth, he was painstakingly drawing in raw mana, forcing it to knit his body back together with sheer willpower. Even... with the current me... it’s still not enough to fight off a pet?

"Fuck..." Nathan growled under his breath.
