Mr. CEO's Ex-Wife: A Cunning Comeback-Chapter 277: You’re Her Husband?
Chapter 277: Chapter 277: You’re Her Husband?
"Ms. Chantelle, now that Mr. Wilson is with you, even Trenton won’t dare mess with you," Calvin said.
"It doesn’t matter," Chantelle replied. "I’m not the same person anymore. Even if Trenton shows up, I won’t be scared. I might die, but I won’t back down." She wiped her face, then stepped out of the car.
Just then, the bodyguards dragged Ruby out of another car.
When she saw Chantelle, Ruby screamed with her voice full of rage. "You bitch! What did you do to me?!"
Thinking about how she would be punished for betraying her master, Ruby wished she could tear Chantelle apart.
"Ruby, if you make it out alive, stay out of my way next time you see me," Chantelle said coldly, trampling on her chest like crushing an insect.
Ruby tried to grab Chantelle’s foot, but the bodyguards held her hands down.
"Chantelle! I’ll kill you! How dare you treat me like this? You don’t have the guts to kill me! Someone’s going to deal with you. You’ll regret what you’ve done to me!"
Chantelle looked down at her. "Don’t worry. I won’t lay a finger on you. You’re not worth it. But someone else is waiting for you."
She then gave a signal, and the bodyguards dragged Ruby to the entrance of the building.
When Ruby looked up and saw James walking toward her, her eyes lit up. "James, help me! That bitch Chantelle hit me! You have to stand up for me!"
But to her shock, James came closer and stepped on her face. "You worthless bitch! You ruined me! How dare you show up in front of me again!"
Only then did Ruby realize James wasn’t the same man who once followed her around. She remembered how she mocked him last time, and how he swore he’d get revenge.
"Chantelle, don’t leave me here! Please take me with you!" Ruby shouted, turning to her.
But Chantelle was already in the car, driving away with her bodyguards.
Before the car drove off, Chantelle glanced at the rearview mirror and saw James dragging Ruby into the building.
Meanwhile, after leaving the hotel, Daniel told Ashton to investigate Trenton immediately.
He had noticed the fear in Chantelle’s eyes when she heard Trenton’s name.
Daniel needed to know what Trenton had done to her that left such a deep scar.
"Sir, from what I know, Trenton has ties to the underworld. The gangs in Braulia look up to him," Ashton said carefully. "If we dig too deep, we might get ourselves into trouble."
"We can secretly look into his connection with Chantelle," Daniel quickly suggested.
He had heard of Trenton. He didn’t know what the man looked like or what his real name was, but he knew the stories, like how Trenton wiped out an entire family or crushed powerful people without mercy.
Still, Daniel wasn’t scared of him.
No matter how strong Trenton was, if he had hurt Chantelle, Daniel would make him kneel and apologize.
"Sir, where are we heading now?" Ashton asked. He could see Daniel had already made up his mind. There was no point in trying to stop him.
"You said Chantelle came from a private kitchen restaurant, right? Let’s go there."
About thirty minutes later, Daniel stood in front of a small restaurant that didn’t stand out.
"Here for a meal? Sorry, we’re closed," said the gray-haired owner, walking out with a friendly smile.
"Excuse me," Daniel said, showing him a photo. "Have you seen this woman before?"
The restaurant owner glanced at the photo and smiled. "She used to come here often. A few years ago, she even learned how to cook from me for about a month. She was my short-term apprentice. But to be honest, she wasn’t very gifted in cooking. Her husband didn’t like her food. She cried here more than once."
Suddenly, a memory flooded in Daniel’s mind.
There was a day when he closed a big deal and was in a good mood. He went home for dinner and casually said the food tasted good. He couldn’t remember Chantelle’s exact reaction, but after that day, she often cooked and waited for him to come home.
Still, he didn’t want to go back. And worse, he scolded her a few times. He said the food was awful and told her to stop trying.
Now, thinking about it, he felt a deep pain in his chest. He could clearly picture Chantelle crying in front of the old man, looking heartbroken and helpless.
"You’re her husband?" the old man asked. "She picked up a meal earlier. Did you eat it? I might be talking too much, but let me say this; you’re lucky to have a wife who cares about you. Even if she’s not great at cooking, that’s not a reason to look down on her."
Chantelle had burned the kitchen more than once while learning, but the owner was touched by how hard she tried.
In his heart, he saw Daniel as a cold man. Not wanting to speak with him anymore, the old man dismissed him and said, "You should go now."
Then he shut the door and locked the restaurant behind him.
After Daniel walked out of the private kitchen restaurant, he felt depressed.
Ashton figured it had something to do with Chantelle. So he gave Daniel a piece of advice. "Mrs. Wilson cares a lot about her kids. If you want to be with her, maybe try caring about them too."
Daniel didn’t say anything to Ashton. He fell silent for a while, then picked up his phone and called Philip.
"Philip, how’s Chantelle doing?"
Ever since Philip and Russell found out that Chantelle’s body went into a power-saving mode, they started studying it in the lab. They promised to let Daniel know immediately if they made any progress.
Daniel knew there was no progress because no one had updated him. Still, he called every day to check on Chantelle.
Philip looked up from a pile of data. He ran a hand through his messy hair and said, "Chantie has been falling asleep more often lately. If we don’t find a way to fix this, it’s going to get worse."
Based on the data he had, Chantelle would fall into a deep sleep every three or four days.
The time between each episode was getting shorter. And each sleep lasted longer. Philip had a bad feeling about it.
Daniel ended the call with a dark expression. He looked at Ashton and said, "Send more people to find Lone Wolf."
Chantelle entered power-saving mode because Lone Wolf had injected her with some kind of drug. Daniel was sure Lone Wolf had the antidote.
"Yes," Ashton said right away and passed the order to the team.
Usually, Lone Wolf could be loud and bold when facing an enemy. But when he wanted to hide, no one could find him.
