Mr. Sterling, Mrs. Sterling is Multifaceted!-Chapter 240: Call Me Mom One More Time
In the narrow prison visiting room, Seraphina Redgrave wore a cream-colored knit sweater, paired with sneakers. Her long, smooth hair was tied up in a simple bun, and she still had baby fat, looking harmless.
But her eyes revealed maturity beyond her years, suggesting that this girl was not just an innocent, well-behaved child.
Before execution, prisoners are entitled to a final visit, yet no one came to visit Lena Lynch.
She decided to submit an application, never expecting that Lena would actually approve it.
That’s why she was sitting here now.
Seraphina patiently waited, and after a while, she heard the clanking sounds of Lena’s handcuffs and leg irons.
She saw a haggard Lena Lynch, dressed in white prison garb, being escorted out by the guards.
As Lena drew closer, Seraphina could see that she no longer resembled her former self, with sunken eyes, withered hair, a sallow complexion, and deep wrinkles like ravines.
Her face was lifeless, already resembling that of a dead person.
Upon seeing her visitor, Lena’s cloudy eyes showed a ripple of emotion. She fought back the stinging in her nose and walked over, her voice hoarse and unpleasant, "I never expected that you would be the one to see me last."
Seraphina’s eyes were devoid of extra emotion; she coldly said, "I’ve paid for your last meal before you die, bought a bowl of dumplings."
Lena didn’t understand her meaning.
"The last meal Granny Coleman made before she died was dumplings."
Seraphina suppressed the fury inside her, speaking each word deliberately, while the image of Granny Coleman’s bloodied, tragic death that day replaced her own kept flashing in her mind.
So pitiful, covered in blood, not even leaving a complete body.
She wanted Lena to taste the dumplings too and make her suffer before dying.
After understanding Seraphina’s intention, Lena stammered, "Was she really that good to you? How long did she care for you? And I..."
Seraphina interrupted her, "Yes, she didn’t take care of me as long as you did, but it was from her that I first felt a mother’s warmth."
"..."
Lena couldn’t say another word, her eyes reddening as she looked at Seraphina.
"Alright, I don’t have anything else to say to you."
Seraphina simply came to pay for the meal, and now she was done and ready to leave.
Lena clenched her fist and suddenly called out, "Little Seraphina."
Seraphina’s expressionless gaze shot over, and Lena’s throat went dry, "Little Mia, she..."
"The parents are both ruined, her legs are crippled, she’s gone to Veridian Isle." Seraphina told her the facts emotionlessly, "But you don’t need to worry too much; maybe she’ll survive."
Normal people would know that a crippled, weak girl couldn’t possibly survive on Veridian Isle.
"Actually, Little Mia, she..."
Lena spoke urgently, wanting to say something. The day she was imprisoned, someone handed her a photo showing Mia Redgrave’s imprisonment and warned her that if she revealed the accident was instigated by someone, Mia would die with no remains.
Seraphina halted in her tracks, asking, "What’s wrong with Mia?"
"She..."
Lena was conflicted, unsure whether she should ask Seraphina for help.
After all, she was the only person she could see before she died.
But if Seraphina didn’t save Mona, surely Mona would be tortured to death.
But if she didn’t speak up, considering the cruelty of the person who orchestrated the kidnapping, how could they spare Mia?
She found herself in a predicament.
"What are you trying to say?" Seraphina was a bit impatient.
Lena cautiously asked, "We’ve already lost our family, and Little Mia is wounded so badly. Little Seraphina, do you still hate us?"
"Ha, what do you think?"
Seraphina thought it was a silly question, for causing her so much pain, how could she still have feelings for them?
Lena slumped back in the chair, actually doubting that pleading with Seraphina would be of any use. She hated Little Mia so much, and who knows, she might even harm her further.
What to do, what should she do?
Lena was extremely anxious.
Seraphina watched Lena’s expression as she slowly walked over, leaning against the glass, coldly facing the woman before her, "You only have this one chance."
"Hmm?"
Lena didn’t register it.
"I’m the only person you’ll see before you die, and you’ll find no one else to speak on this matter."
Seraphina slowly stated.
Lena almost blurted it out, her fingers tangled together, deeply troubled, suddenly asking, "Little Seraphina, would you call me ’Mom’ once more?"
If she did, she might just consider helping because Mia is her sister.
Seraphina smirked, her eyes full of ridicule, "That ’Mom,’ you can’t bear to hear it."
"..."
Lena was stunned, her heart filled with boundless despair; this time, indeed, there was nothing she could do.
Seraphina already hated them too much to help Mia; how foolish to expect otherwise.
"Since you won’t speak, I won’t force you."
Seraphina said and then turned to leave without hesitation.
After several steps, Seraphina stopped, turning back for one last look at this woman.
Once, she embodied the motherly love the young Seraphina yearned for, yet she only ever exploited Seraphina.
This time, she would withdraw all those useless hopes.
Seraphina sensed Lena harboring some concern, wanting help but not trusting her enough to ask.
But she wasn’t particularly interested in the matter, and calling her ’Mom’ was something she would never do.
At that moment, many childhood memories flashed through Seraphina’s mind; she painfully erased them, shredding every piece, severing all ties with the Redgrave Family.
This time, Seraphina didn’t look back, walking steadily away, a terrifying resolve in her stride.
The corridor was long and dim, the chilling wind cutting to the bone.
Two prison guards approached, escorting a prisoner.
The man was around thirty, with a clean-cut buzz, a dignified face marked by a deep scar on the left cheek, lips pressed tightly together, and handcuffs and leg irons restricting his movement.
Just a glance and Seraphina noticed the electronic handcuffs on his arm.
As they brushed past each other, time seemed to slow down. When the man clearly saw the woman’s features, a shock flashed across his face, but it was gone in less than a second, returning to normal.
Seraphina stopped in her tracks, pinching her palm to stay alert.
"Hello."
Seraphina smiled, greeting the two guards.
The prisoner stiffened slightly, while the guards turned with curious expressions towards her.
Seraphina pulled out her work ID from The Law Council, holding it up before them, "This is my ID from The Law Council. I came here today to deliver documents."
Seraphina only knew that The Law Council would sometimes send documents over, but she had never been here before.
Upon recognizing her identity, the two guards became amiable, "You’re from The Law Council, miss! It’s kind of you to come all this way to deliver documents. You’re so young, with a bright future ahead!"
"Oh, you’re too kind."
Seraphina managed her words with perfect precision.
