Mr. Sterling, Mrs. Sterling is Multifaceted!-Chapter 284: Beatrice Fawcett’s Accusation
Ethan Sterling, in truth, really needed companionship.
"Meow..."
The little fawn whimpered softly, its tiny pink paws scratching at her chest as if understanding her words and being quite dissatisfied with her current attitude.
"Don’t be afraid of Ethan. He only looks fierce on the outside, but he’s actually quite kind. With you being so adorable, if you act cutely in front of him, he’s sure to like you very much."
Seraphina Redgrave advised it.
But the little fawn continued to scratch her.
Seraphina hugged it tightly to her chest, scratching its head a few times with what she thought was considerable force, "You need to be a bit more obedient, or I’ll keep scratching you and make you uncomfortable."
The little fawn squirmed incessantly in her arms. Slowly, a lively atmosphere developed between the two, and they played joyfully.
Staff members outside the one-way glass looked on at the scene inside, exchanging glances and sighs with a touch of melancholy.
Seraphina leaned against the cell’s wall all night like this, the little fawn in her arms already fast asleep, while she quietly gazed into emptiness.
She had originally thought that the thing she’d regret most before dying was not being able to rebuild Veridian Isle; it was, after all, her greatest wish.
But now...
Her mind was filled entirely with Ethan Sterling.
Scenes from the past played in her mind like frames from a movie, causing her to feel a mixture of bittersweet emotions.
From time to time, she picked up a candy, tore open the wrapper, and put it in her mouth.
Soon, she was surrounded by discarded candy wrappers.
Just that one night, she finished an entire jar of candy.
...
The first ray of sunlight quietly emerged from the east, gradually swallowing the darkness and illuminating the bustling yet cold city.
In a not-so-large bedroom, Beatrice Fawcett sat curled up on her bed, hugging her knees, her long hair cascading over her shoulders and obscuring most of her face, making her look extremely haggard.
The bedroom door was open, and Mrs. Fawcett sat on the sofa, her eyes somewhat red-rimmed, sighing helplessly.
Beatrice knew why her mother was sighing. It was hard for her to believe that the daughter she had raised turned out to be such a coward, willing to betray Seraphina Redgrave, to whom she owed half of everything she had.
Beatrice couldn’t deny that she had indeed betrayed Seraphina in a very straightforward manner back then.
Ever since that chaos, she had been locked in a detention center, with no one coming to question her, nor did anyone provide her with food, water, or a chance to bathe.
This situation continued until yesterday.
Someone brought her into a small interrogation room.
She didn’t know where it was, but it certainly wasn’t at the police station because someone had covered her eyes and taken her to a distant place.
The interrogators were dressed very formally, in suits and ties, and from their words, it was clear they were officials.
"Classmate Fawcett, could you please tell us in detail how you came to know Seraphina Redgrave? Were you aware that she was a fugitive from Veridian Isle?"
"Classmate Fawcett, we’ve arranged for the best doctors to examine you shortly. You know, people from Veridian Isle carry various infectious diseases. It wouldn’t be good if you were infected."
"Classmate Fawcett, why are you not speaking? Should I assume you’re implicitly admitting to illicit dealings with Seraphina Redgrave? There’s really no need to protect her; people from Veridian Isle disregard laws and even life itself. She not only concealed her identity but also committed murder."
"What happened at the bar that day was all caught on surveillance cameras, and you appeared in the footage. However, clearing you of any responsibility would be a piece of cake for us."
"Seraphina Redgrave is different from ordinary fugitives from Veridian Isle. Her reckless words have divided the populace into two camps, which isn’t good for our country. If we have more evidence to prove her words false, or if more people testify against her, we could quickly quell external disputes."
"Classmate Fawcett, if I recall correctly, you’re from a single-parent home, right? Your mother has worked hard all her life to raise you. If you were convicted, what would become of her? I heard your mother also holds a position in The Defiance Society. If you truly have nothing to say, I might start by questioning her."
"..."
She remembered every question in the interrogation room vividly, naturally also recalling her straightforward response, "You mustn’t touch my family. You want me to testify against Seraphina Redgrave? Fine, I confess to her crimes, whatever charges you wish."
Soon enough, she was released.
Beatrice recalled the moment she spoke those words, her eyes brimming with tears. She hastily wiped her face, picked up the plane ticket from the nightstand drawer, and walked out of the bedroom. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚
Mrs. Fawcett sat there, deeply regretful, slapping herself repeatedly. Upon seeing Beatrice emerge from the bedroom, she immediately stopped, "Up so early? I’ll make you breakfast."
No parent can bear to blame their child, only regretting not having taught them well.
"Mom."
Beatrice walked to Mrs. Fawcett’s side, kneeling directly, then handed her the plane ticket.
"Mom, the execution is at noon today. This is a ticket for a 10 AM flight. You should quickly pack and then take the ticket to leave the country."
Mrs. Fawcett did not immediately take the ticket, staring at Beatrice in shock, "What, what are you planning to do?"
"Back then, in the detention center, if I didn’t say anything, or if my words didn’t satisfy them, I wouldn’t have been able to leave."
Kneeling on the ground, Beatrice looked at her mother with immense remorse, "The execution is at noon today, and a lot of people will be there. I will clarify in front of them all that I was coerced into confessing, and everything I said before doesn’t count. By doing so, the execution will definitely be postponed, and Seraphina won’t have to die."
However, this meant she would be taken back by those people, and she had no idea what she would face thereafter.
"..."
Mrs. Fawcett looked at the plane ticket held aloft, suddenly understanding everything.
The tears that had stopped started flowing again, her voice choked with emotion, "Silly child, so that’s what you were thinking."
"Back when I put all my effort into getting into Sovereign University, I found the hierarchy there too rigid to advance further. It was Seraphina who gave me hope, enabling me to fulfill my dreams. She even found work for you, and that wasn’t all; she helped cover the down payment for this apartment, saying I could slowly repay her. During the competition, to prevent me from getting distracted, she put herself in danger, but luckily she survived."
Every single event, Beatrice remembered clearly.
