Chapter 293: Chapter 293: What If I Choose to Grow Old Within These Walls?

If the tycoons won’t let Seraphina Redgrave live, then he’ll make sure the tycoons die.

That way, she can live without worry.

"Ethan Sterling, you look so unfamiliar to me right now." Miles Harrington had never seen him like this. The once rational Ethan Sterling, where did he go?

"Doing this, you’ll destroy yourself too!"

He was also a tycoon, and one at the pinnacle of the pyramid.

"I failed to protect her properly, so I deserve punishment too."

Ethan’s tone was calm, but every word he spoke was laced with madness.

"..."

Miles stood there dumbfounded, then suddenly burst into loud laughter, crazy laughter, mournful laughter, tears gathering in the corners of his eyes.

Ethan coldly watched him.

"So what was everything Nathan Ayers and I did for? We wanted to help you, we didn’t want everything you earned to turn into nothing."

Miles laughed bitterly, "Since you’re so stubborn, don’t blame my ruthlessness. I’ll make your father stand out and take control of the Sterling Group again. Don’t blame me for being your adversary."

He couldn’t just stand by and watch this nation fall into chaos.

The power Ethan held couldn’t be ignored, so the only option was to find Ryan Sterling to deal with him.

"Alright."

Ethan answered straightforwardly, his eyes full of provocation, "Then let’s see who’ll succeed first: you getting Ryan back in charge of the Sterling Group, or me ensuring you won’t hold that position."

This made Miles’ pale lips tremble, and he then smiled bitterly, "I really didn’t expect that one day a woman would turn our relationship into this."

"You shouldn’t have touched her."

Ethan spoke resolutely.

"Alright, since things have come to this, there’s nothing more to discuss. Leave with your people now; our past ties end here."

Miles straightened his tie, the words were difficult to say.

Ethan left The Directorate, and between them, there was no longer any sentiment left.

"..."

Ethan gave him a deep look, said nothing, then turned to leave.

"What if I’m willing to die of old age within these walls?"

Ethan suddenly looked up, seeing Seraphina Redgrave at the door, holding a white medical box, her complexion pale. Her cold eyes didn’t stay on him but fell on Miles.

"Why are you here?" Ethan frowned.

"I thought your injuries couldn’t be delayed any longer, so I borrowed a medical kit to help treat your wounds."

As for how much she’d heard.

She’d heard from when Miles mentioned peace for the Z nation.

Seraphina walked towards Ethan and gave him a slight smile, "Sit down first, let me clean your face."

Ethan obediently sat down, his gaze following her movements.

Seraphina opened the medical box, took out sterile wipes, and gently wiped the grime from his face.

"Seraphina, what did you mean by what you said earlier?"

Miles stood there looking at Seraphina; today she was much calmer than Ethan.

She gently wiped his brow, revealing a startling bruise beneath the blood stains. She couldn’t help but touch it lightly with her fingers, Ethan’s eyebrows barely frowning, prompting her to be even more gentle, first wiping away the dirt with the wet wipes.

Ethan looked at her gentle face, unable to resist leaning his head closer to her.

Seraphina sensed his movement, lightly curling her lips, then said, "Today I didn’t appear at the execution ground. You can tell the public that it was because of the crowd causing concerns of chaos, so she was executed secretly."

"Such words might fool the common people, but certainly not the tycoons." Miles paused, "Maybe some tycoons already know Ethan came to take her."

"So, today’s Seraphina wasn’t rescued but was killed."

Seraphina earnestly cleaned Ethan’s face, liberating his handsome features from the blood stains piece by piece.

Ethan immediately understood Seraphina’s meaning, staring at her as if to confirm the credibility of her words.

Miles mulled it over for a while and then said, "You mean to alter today’s events, to tell the tycoons and officials that today someone came to The Directorate to silence you, with a strong possibility that it was Ethan’s doing?"

"Ethan was attending a summit in Y Nation, heard there was trouble from Veridian Isle, and he’s always been willful and ruthless. Dissatisfied with Veridian Isle’s provocations, wanting to personally kill this Veridian Isle fugitive, he took them away before the execution and burned them alive as a lesson to those from Veridian Isle about the consequences of causing trouble."

After Seraphina finished, Ethan’s face was almost clean, but this only made the wounds more apparent, making it hard for her to look at.

Miles, hearing this, felt his thoughts fall into place, "Forging the surveillance footage is simple. Seeing the charred body won’t help, and since it was Ethan who personally dealt with her, the tycoons probably won’t pursue it further. After all, none would expect the most powerful tycoon of Z Nation to come to The Directorate to save a Veridian Isle fugitive."

Claiming he came to kill makes more sense.

With this, the matter could be resolved smoothly.

Thinking this, Miles felt more at ease. It seemed things hadn’t reached the point of life and death between them after all.

"What next?"

Ethan focused on Seraphina’s lips as he asked.

"Next, Z Nation remains the same, I don’t have to die, you don’t have to do what you were planning, and everything can be resolved peacefully."

Seraphina held her face, "Of course, betraying the force behind me is impossible, but I can promise that they won’t cause trouble, and like before, will help clear Veridian Isle’s name step by step, though it might take longer."

Perhaps three years, maybe five, or even longer, perhaps it’ll never be achieved.

"You know who I was asking about."

Ethan interrupted her.

Seraphina knew he was asking about her plans next.

She continued her work, wiping the grime from his neck, noticing several abrasions, a flicker of pain crossing her eyes.

She paused for a moment and then in a calm voice said, "From now on, I’ll live as though I’m dead, having no part in rebuilding Veridian Isle, nor seeing anyone else. Once Ethan finds a safe enough place, I’ll stay inside, never stepping out until I die."
