Mr. Warner, Your Wife is Running Away Again!-Chapter 659: Would You Wait for Me to Come Back?
Vanessa Sterling stood wrapped in a white puff jacket amidst the crowd, feeling the warmth that such a lively environment brought to her heart.
Not far in front of her was a young couple. The boy bought a few sparklers from a vendor and lit them for the girl, who was both delighted and a bit frightened, stretching out her hand cautiously.
She remembered the first time she set off fireworks—it was in the Sterling’s backyard.
She also stood aside watching the other kids play, not daring to join in.
It was her uncle who noticed her and took the initiative to light one and hand it to her...
The fireworks in the girl’s hand burned out, and she turned to look at the boy beside her, saying, "Senior, thank you for spending the whole day with me. I’m really happy."
Zachary Wilson looked down at Lana Holloway, smiling gently: "It’s you who accompanied me. I know you’re usually busy, and today you spent the whole day with me. This is the happiest Christmas I’ve had."
Lana smiled shyly, pursing her lips, and said, "I saw the weather forecast, and it said the snow over there has stopped. The flights should resume tomorrow or the day after, right?"
Zachary nodded: "Yeah, I rescheduled for the day after tomorrow."
After that, the two of them fell into silence, each deep in thought.
Lana spoke first, saying, "Then I wish you success and a bright future, Senior."
Zachary turned to look at her: "Is that all you want to say to me?"
Lana was momentarily stunned, pursing her lips. In the dim light of the night, the blush on her face was barely noticeable.
Zachary continued: "I’m not sure if I should be telling you this now because I’m about to go abroad, and I won’t be able to be by your side to take care of you all the time. I think a girl like you is bound to meet many excellent guys who can promise you things I might not be able to, so I’m worried about holding you back."
"Senior..." Lana widened her eyes in shock, almost speechless. Though Zachary’s words were clear, she still found it hard to believe that the person she secretly admired was about to confess to her?
Zachary turned Lana around to face him, looking seriously at her as he said sincerely, "But if I don’t say something, I might regret it forever. I want to know your answer."
Lana stared blankly at Zachary, listening to his gentle tone as he said, "Lana, would you be willing to wait for me to come back?"
Inside, Lana felt so happy and excited, yet her eyes welled up with tears, nodding without being able to speak.
Seeing her nod, Zachary breathed a sigh of relief and pulled Lana into his arms, moved as he said, "I regret not mustering the courage to confess to you sooner, so at least I could be by your side as your boyfriend for a while."
Lana felt the warmth in Zachary’s embrace, smiling contentedly, cautiously lifting her hand to hug him tight, still finding it hard to believe this was real; she never even dreamed of this.
Her dark eyes sparkled as she looked up at Zachary, her voice trembling slightly with excitement as she said, "It doesn’t matter, Senior. I’ll wait for you to come back. We have plenty of time in the future. Plus, communication tools are advanced, and travel is convenient. I’ll visit you when I have the time."
"Thank you, Lana. We still have tomorrow. Let’s officially go on a date. I want to take some pictures; I’m afraid I’ll miss you the moment I leave."
Lana nestled into his embrace, nodding as she tightened her arms slightly, though Zachary was soon going abroad, and they wouldn’t see each other for a long time. But in her heart, Lana suddenly had something to look forward to and dream about.
Anticipating his return from studying abroad, both becoming better versions of themselves, then walking down the aisle together...
"It’s getting late, let me take you back. After spending the whole day out, you must be tired. Get some rest, and I’ll come by in the morning."
Lana nodded, looking down as Zachary naturally took her hand, the warmth and breadth of his palm filling her heart with sweetness.
"Boom—"
"Boom—"
The fireworks exploded in the sky with a sound, their colorful shapes reflected in the river below,
Vanessa Sterling looked up at the night sky, and Miles Sterling watched her from not far away.
Amidst the noisy surroundings, the worlds within their eyes were serene and beautiful at this moment.
Snowflakes drifted down silently from above, yet Vanessa seemed oblivious, still gazing upward at the fireworks.
Miles Sterling approached her slowly, reaching out to pull up the hood of her coat.
Vanessa turned back in surprise to look at him, and Miles asked, "What are you doing here?"
Vanessa seemed curious about how Miles managed to find her here but asked nothing, softly replying, "...Just out for a walk."
Miles: "Didn’t meet up with friends?"
Vanessa glanced at him, shaking her head gently.
Miles: "I thought you sneaked out here for a date."
Vanessa lowered her head, not speaking.
"Let’s head back."
With those three words, Miles turned and began walking back toward the riverbank.
Vanessa looked up at the dazzling fireworks in the night sky once more, putting her hands into her coat pockets as she followed behind Miles.
The two maintained a distance of one meter, walking one in front of the other along the way.
Miles’ car was parked in an underground garage by the riverbank. Although he could’ve let Vanessa wait by the bridge, he insisted she accompany him to the garage.
Like two complete strangers, neither spoke a word to the other.
Once in the car, Vanessa settled into the rear seat by the right-hand window—notably the farthest from Miles, whether intentionally or unintentionally, she always chose this spot. 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖
Her gaze remained outside the window, leaving Miles pondering what she might be thinking while staring into space, yet he never figured it out.
Returning home required crossing just one bridge, and before long, they arrived at the building.
As the car came to a stop, Vanessa realized they had reached, glancing outside as she saw a man looking toward her under the streetlight.
It was none other than the guy who fought with Miles at the supermarket the other day.
Heath Holloway seemed to have been waiting a long time, as his black down jacket, hood, and shoulders were dusted with a fine layer of snow.
He looked up at any passing car, confirming it was Vanessa, then approached with a smile, "Vanessa! Where did you go? I’ve been waiting for you here for ages."
Vanessa wasn’t as familiar and outgoing as Heath, especially with Miles still in the car.
She avoided Heath’s gaze, but he had already approached her. Even as Vanessa didn’t respond, Heath continued speaking, "Where did you hang out? I thought I wouldn’t see you return today! I got you a gift."
With that, Heath pulled a small box from his pocket: "Here you go."
He scratched his head somewhat sheepishly, smiling as he said, "I wasn’t sure what you’d like, but thought this might suit you."
Before Vanessa could respond, Miles got out and walked over, glaring at Heath with apparent hostility...
