Mr. Warner, Your Wife is Running Away Again!-Chapter 74: No Match for Your Husband
The tent is made of relatively high-quality material, so to cut two large slits like this is obviously deliberate.
Maybe when General called out last night, it was because he discovered this, but Audrey was so sleepy at the time that she didn’t notice.
Standing outside the tent, she looked around; most people were still asleep.
Audrey walked over to the RV and found an editor to borrow some tape, then patched up the two long slits on the tent herself without making a fuss or questioning who did it.
Her intuition told her that Winterlight did it. A normal person wouldn’t be so idle as to do something like this in the middle of the night.
But without catching her in the act, even if Winterlight did it, she certainly wouldn’t admit it.
"Audrey, you’re up so early?" Laura Yates crawled out of her tent, stretched, and greeted Audrey.
Audrey nodded, not telling Laura about someone cutting her tent, merely saying, "Shall we go for a walk after breakfast?"
"Sure, let’s wake Vanessa."
...
When the three of them were having breakfast together, Winterlight and two other girls approached them, "Luna, Hylan, did you sleep well last night?"
Laura Yates smiled and nodded, "Alright, Crystal, those dark circles look heavy on you. Didn’t sleep well?"
Crystal Wilson laughed dryly and said, "I was catching up on drafts last night, slept late."
Laura Yates teased Audrey, "Look, you always call me a devil, but other editors have to make their authors work even when we’re out having fun, whereas I let you play at ease."
Audrey chuckled, glanced at Crystal Wilson, and continued sipping her porridge.
"Luna, Hylan, want to join in a card game later?"
Laura Yates turned to ask Audrey and Vanessa, "Do you two know how to play?"
Crystal Wilson hurriedly replied, "We just need two more players."
She had only invited Luna and Hylan, clearly not planning to include Audrey.
Audrey hadn’t spoken yet, but Vanessa said, "I don’t know how to play; you guys go ahead." 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺
Audrey also smiled and said, "I don’t play either; I’ll stroll around with Vanessa."
Laura Yates said, "If you’re not playing, then I’m not going either. Crystal, go find Clay and the others; they probably know how to play."
Crystal Wilson chatted a bit more, but when the conversation dried up, she left with her two friends.
Audrey picked up a napkin, wiped her mouth, and asked Laura Yates, "Laura, are you familiar with her?"
Laura Yates smiled lightly and said, "I’m familiar with her editor. Winterlight is a star author for her editor, so she often mentions her to me, but we’ve only chatted in the group until now. This is the first time meeting in person."
Audrey nodded thoughtfully, "I feel like she’s targeting me."
Laura Yates agreed, "I think she’s quite jealous. She’s often a show-off in the group, probably because you, a newcomer, have surpassed her in performance, causing her to be biased against you."
Vanessa seemed to have noticed too and comforted Audrey, "Just ignore her, there are all kinds of people."
"Right, we don’t eat from her or use her, so we don’t need to care about her attitude. When I brought Hylan into the group as a rising star, she privately added Hylan, acting all friendly, but secretly told others Hylan was manipulating the rankings and buying votes. She can fabricate anything. Just play along with people like her on the surface; don’t take it to heart."
Everyone seemed clear about Crystal Wilson’s character, making Audrey feel much better.
Audrey initially thought bringing General here would require her to worry more, but now she found that General had become something of a celebrity, constantly surrounded by people wanting to play with him.
After lunch, a few men went fishing by the lake, and Laura Yates brought Audrey and the others along to join the fun.
Growing up, Audrey had a bit of a phobia from falling into a river while fishing with her dad, so she and Vanessa sat far away on a bench by the lake watching the fun.
"Do you have a boyfriend, Vanessa?" Audrey suddenly asked.
Vanessa was a bit taken aback, then shook her head.
Audrey, a bit surprised, said, "Really? I thought with all those sweet comics you draw, you’d surely have a boyfriend like that!"
Vanessa looked at the lake with a smile and said, "It’s because I don’t that I put the romantic fantasies into the comics."
"True enough..." Audrey mused, "So do you like someone?"
Vanessa didn’t hesitate, smiled and nodded, thinking of the person, she felt sweet.
"Why not pursue someone you like?"
Vanessa’s smile faded, "He’s married."
Audrey was stunned and looked at her sympathetically, wanting to comfort her but not knowing how.
Because she thought about it, if Shane had married another woman, no amount of comfort or reasoning would have helped her.
Vanessa, however, looked at the lake with a relieved gaze and said, "As long as he’s happy, I’ve never hoped to be with him."
Hearing this made Audrey feel quite sad, thinking she couldn’t be as noble as Vanessa.
Yet if it really came to that, perhaps it would be just a case of helplessness.
If Shane actually got married, she couldn’t ruin his marriage, could she?
She was just glad such a thing hadn’t happened to her, saving her from the distress.
Hearing Vanessa use the word "hope," Audrey thought for a moment and said, "Vanessa, you need a bit more confidence. Just think, you’re only twenty now, yet you have your own successful career, you’re capable and pretty, many guys would like you. So if you meet another guy you like, be brave."
Vanessa lowered her gaze silently, seeming to have concerns yet unable to express them.
Seeing her expression change, Audrey worried she misspoke, pursed her lips and decided not to continue, instead said, "Want some juice? I’ll go get it."
"I’ll go with you."
Sitting under the shade next to a small table, each holding a cup of juice, they sat on stone benches.
While chatting, Vanessa received a call and walked a short distance away to answer it.
"Ding dong—"
Audrey’s phone rang; Shane messaged saying he was about to board the plane.
Calculating the time, if everything went smoothly after reaching the airport, he should arrive around five.
Thinking about his arrival made Audrey unable to hide her happiness as she stared at her phone.
"Audrey, why are you smiling to yourself?"
Audrey put down her phone, looked up at the man striking up a conversation, surprised, "Jasper Jones?"
"No need to call me a big shot, just call me Jasper." Jasper smiled and glanced over at Vanessa taking a call, "You and Vanessa seem close."
Seeing Jasper’s expression, Audrey understood immediately and, smiling knowingly, asked, "What’s up? Do you like her?"
Jasper, thick-skinned, chuckled, "Hehe, actually, I quite like you too; it’s just I can’t compete with your husband."
